3016688, The 1995 Source Awards
Posted by squeeg, Thu Jun-06-19 11:24 AM
If you've never seen the entire show (famous for "The South got somethin' to say!", "Come to Death Row!", and "The East Coast don't love Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg?"), I've uploaded it in its entirety (minus the opening minutes of Death Row's performance) to YouTube. Check it out before someone finds a reason to block it.

were asleep in the next room, while we were on vacation that summer.

"Y'ALL DON'T LOVE US?"
3016757, I caught it after SNL.

I religiously read The Source, but I didn't know exactly when the awards were airing. That shit just popped up, and I had to run to grab a tape to record it.

I remember watching it and when Snoop came out and said...

"East Coast aint got love for Snoop and Dr. Dre???"

"Let it be known then!!!"

I was so hyped... probably the most gangsta shit i ever seen.

Reminds me how largely wack the West Coast Gangster stuff was...so cliche, negative, lacking creativity, and just tired...
3016993, Yeah they should have found a white rapper who
Posted by Stadiq, Mon Jun-17-19 09:37 PM

Sounded like Rakim. That would have been fresh!

Pssst a lot of your favorites from the east coast were
on that “gangster shit” too.

Also, there’s context to this entire thing. You know that.

You prefer east coast shit over anything else. Okay.

While that’s weird enough in 2019, don’t pretend like
you don’t know the whole story.

And don’t pretend you are the keeper of what’s fresh,
tired, etc. You prop up white culture vultures cuz you like
their beats and/or remind you of the 90s.

I mean, like what you like but stop with this weird
regional shit already.

Not to mention a lot of the legends you take shots
at simply because of their zip codes were basically
kids at the time.

...blah blah, your making wild assumptions, fact is IMO Your Old Droog and Bronson are talented MC's, has nothing to do with being white. Strange that your still on that actually. Anyway, I'm black as the night, and long live creative, thoughtful, well crafted music...and yes that shit your referencing was largely wack. If you think the largely negative vibe those cats brought didn't influence the art negatively, you were not paying attention. Peace my BROTHER?
3017121, Or how much the East Coast has fallen ever since.

3017122, There was plenty of good east coast stuff in the late 90s and early 00s
Posted by DJR, Sat Jun-22-19 04:19 PM
You had that whole “mainstream” - “underground” divide, but there was plenty of good east coast rap.

Nas, The Lox, Mos, Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Jay, DMX, Meth, Redman,Gang Starr, Mase, Cam, Pun, Mobb Deep, MOP, Busta, sometimes 50, Fab, to a degree Clipse(VA and rapped east coastish), etc.

In many ways yes, and I could care less where an act is from. Long live artistry, well crafted, creative music...
3017162, Deathrow albums still sound good today

It's hard to front on how well-crafted the music is, even if the subject matter is objectionable.

3026589, You mean looped funk samples

And using studio musicians to add layers?

3017040, Who the Hell was that Sam Dude with Death Row?
Posted by Adwhizz, Wed Jun-19-19 05:51 PM
I recognized everyone else from that part as being Big names in Rap, but I don't think I've ever seen that dude before

Edit: All right I guess he's Sam Sneed, I vaguely remember that name
3017041, Seeing BIG win an award for best NEW artist trips me out
Posted by Adwhizz, Wed Jun-19-19 05:59 PM

The judging Committee managed to do a better job than the Grammy's in avoiding the "Best New Artist" Curse by choosing Outkast over the other 3 groups (Any other year Bone Thugs probably would have deserved the win in that category)
3017044, “Recognize” was a pretty big hit back then
Posted by DJR, Wed Jun-19-19 07:14 PM
3017046, Producer and rapper from Pittsburgh who had a brief stint on Death Row.
Posted by squeeg, Wed Jun-19-19 08:00 PM
Before then, he produced half of K-Solo's 'Time's Up' album in 1992 ("Was on the DL with The Squad, but Solo couldn't hold it back"). He was on the skit before "Gz Up, Hoes Down" on the original pressings of 'Doggystyle.'

The song he performed on the Source Awards, "U Better Recognize," was on the 'Murder Was The Case' soundtrack.

Is what I needed and I didn't even know it.

LoL @ that intro by Dre...

Also, LOL/WTF at their set just being 4 Dudes on stage twerking & rapping. They couldn't get some chicks up there?

And the crowd of mostly Hardcore rap dudes seemed to be INTO it, when it cut to crowd shots!
3017049, Is that DJ Pooh on the wheelz of steel ?!
Posted by Brew, Wed Jun-19-19 09:25 PM
Never knew that !

Looking back that whole east-west split we made so much about came and went in the course of an hour. Somehow we turned that into nearly allowing our culture to be destroyed.
John Singleton was so on point.

and that last category was bananas. so much is different if nas or scarface win that award. i love outkast but believe they won by being nominated. Bad Boy seemed to get emboldened into the excess of the shiny suit era and Death Row metastasized in response.
greatest what if in hip-hop, IMO.

respect,
