3015201, Your favorite song where the rapper uses another rapper's flow
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-10-19 09:00 AM
Whether it's stated or not. Homeboy Sandman is one of my favorite rappers of life...been on a kick this week, listening to nothing but his stuff. This is one of my faves. He nails it.

Though Thought didn’t just imitate their flow, he imitated the voices and deliveries too. I remember some thought Kane and G Rap were actually featured on the song.

Amazing.

3015505, Biting ? Rakim wrote the song.

3015506, I’m pretty sure it was Juice that wrote the song
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Apr-23-19 01:39 PM
He had the connection to Hula and Fingers, the Chicago production team that made the beat.
3015226, Do Puffy and Dre joints where they flow like the writer count?
Posted by DJR, Wed Apr-10-19 07:46 PM
Because those Puffy songs that Pharoahe Monch wrote are pretty funny to me, hearing Puff try to rap like Pharoahe.
http://youtu.be/MVSc3JRjc8k
And I can’t not hear Jay-Z on Still D.R.E. Like, I can HEAR Jay’s voice rapping that whole song in my head.
3015228, Yikes - Diddy really went for the whole aesthetic there didn't he lol
Posted by Brew, Wed Apr-10-19 09:13 PM
I mean he may as well have been rapping thru a Pharoahe Monch vocoder.

I know it's weird but I never did, and still don't, hear Jay in "Still DRE" which I'm thankful for. Frankly I think Dre's voice is so good that I never really found it to be blatantly obvious who was writing for him. The early Eminem years were the closest he ever came to sounding like his ghostwriter but even then the strength of his rapping voice got me past that.

Speaking of Eminem, I just recently started picking up on just how closely Eminem's flow in his early years mimicked Masta Ace's. I realized it when I revisited a bunch of Masta Ace stuff early last year, and during that time I heard a few Slim Shady LP songs and it hit me. To his credit Em always showed a ton of love to Masta Ace and I think to this day cites him as one of his all time favorite MCs so I consider it a sign of respect, especially considering that he switched up his flow right away on his subsequent albums.
3015229, That's the first time I actually heard that song (had heard about it)
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Apr-10-19 10:26 PM
I'd listen to a version where it really was just Monch and not Diddy pretending to be Monch.
3015231, I Remember When That Album "Play" Came Out...
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Apr-10-19 11:14 PM
...I got a promo copy of the cd, and was reading the credits and was shocked when I saw Pharoahe Monch's name on it, so when I got home to listen to it, and was shocked how Puffy just went and copied/ mimicked Pharoahe's entire flow word for word, I was like c'mon you suppose to spit it with your flow not the person who wrote it; but knowing Puffy he's so use to spitting like Biggie & Mase that when he started to hire others he just said fuck it, everybody knows I don't write my own shit, ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

3015239, everybody knows I don't write my own shit, ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Exactly my thinking. Puff don't five a fuuuuuuuck. Also, Puff doesn't really mis-step. He comes off very intentional.

How big a hit was Simon Says? I ask because I wonder if it's possible the typical Puffy fan would have no clue who Pharoahe Monch was despite the fact Simon Says dropped well before that Press Play album did.
3015253, Simon Says cracked the billboard top 100 at 97
Posted by DJR, Thu Apr-11-19 04:26 PM
That was a big rap hit though.

I would bet that most of those buying Press Play in 2006 were not watching the Simon Says video on Rap City in ‘99 though.
3015248, LOL...I'm crying at Puffy morphing into PM, lol...

3015230, Torae "Switch" Produced by Black Milk
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Apr-10-19 11:06 PM
When I first heard this I was going bananas (heard it on Dj Eclipse's Halftime Show on WNYU) and I had to hear it again, then later Torae came out with a video for it, dude killed it, when it did the 2Pac flow, I busted out laughing, plus the beat was by one of my favorite producers Black Milk was perfect.

3015238, Last Emperor's "Secret Wars"
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Apr-11-19 10:05 AM

He does a lots of different impresions, most of them pretty quick. But they're entertaining:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuAetZIG0mg&t=3s

Part 2 isn't NEARLY as good. In fact, I'd say it borders on bad. The beat is slow and plodding, and he leans ***too*** heavy on the impressions. I can't even find it on YouTube.
3015241, Man I loved Last Emp.
Posted by Brew, Thu Apr-11-19 11:08 AM
I feel like we had this discussion before but whatever happened to him ?

You're right re: Secret Wars I vs. II. The 2nd version was unnecessary (although I obviously understand why he'd want to try and recreate the magic and hype he had w/the first one).
3015242, me too

He dropped a new album last year, but I keep forgetting to check it. Called Jungle Jim

The concept seemed kinda...corny.
3015244, Haha what was the concept ?

The *title* sounds corny as hell haha but I'm not sure what it means.

Glad he's still around, at least.
3015245, honestly I don't even remember
Posted by Stadiq, Thu Apr-11-19 11:32 AM

All I know is I've been hoping for a comeback for some time, and when I finally read it was happening I got hyped.

then I read about the concept (I think he plays a character or something) and the no-name producer (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but...sometimes it is lol) and my excitement went down.

Then last year had so many incredible releases I never got around to it.

I still need to check it, it just keeps falling down the list- which I never thought I'd say.

Now if Diverse ever drops something new I'm probably calling off sick that day...

he rode that shit lovely and pulled it off pretty well.
3015259, Oh shit - never noticed that.

That's dope. I was about to ask if that was intentional or if he ever mentioned that he did it on purpose but then I heard the "Hey young world ..." line and, yep. Haha.

Pharrell produced both.
3015265, I’m probably in the minority, but I really liked I got a right ta...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Apr-12-19 07:40 AM
that Announcement joint was AWFUL, though, man.
3015276, I’m probably being too hard on “I Got a Right Ta”
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Apr-12-19 01:45 PM
Just didn’t sound quite right to me.
3015343, With you. I Got a Right Ta was jarring at first.
Posted by Brew, Tue Apr-16-19 09:36 AM
But it grew on me and now it's actually one of my favorites from that album.

And it's kinda a microcosm of the entire album as well - jarring at first but grew on me quickly.
3015376, very apt, description...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-17-19 03:11 PM
I remember the first time I listened to Jimi Was a Rock Star...it was so chaotic, I turned it off.
3015379, LOL yea totally.
Posted by Brew, Wed Apr-17-19 09:10 PM
>I remember the first time I listened to Jimi Was a Rock
>Star...it was so chaotic, I turned it off.

Honestly I still don't really *like* Jimi Was a Rock Star all that much but I tolerate it now. I used to skip it. It's the only song on that album that just doesn't sound anything at all like a Common song to me. I listen to Common for MCing, not a bunch of producers and singers making a tribute.
3015267, Man that album is trash
Posted by blueeclipse, Fri Apr-12-19 08:35 AM
One of the worst experiences I've ever had popping in a new album.......I still cant beleive he put this shit out
3015344, Hope you're referring to UMC.
Posted by Brew, Tue Apr-16-19 09:36 AM
Cause yea - I don't even acknowledge that album exists most of the time.
3015280, I kinda dig Dre on Kendrick Lamar's Compton
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Apr-12-19 06:02 PM
But I like Dre's voice as a rapper, so I'm partial.
3015283, The Game does it all the time but...
Posted by phemom, Fri Apr-12-19 06:30 PM
One of my favorites is his song with Tyler,The Creator where Game decides to rap like an Odd Future member.

3015400, I hear Nas in “Big Willie Style”
Posted by DJR, Thu Apr-18-19 07:23 PM
the song, off the album of the same name.

Will even shouts out “Nas Escobar” in that song. No writing credits listed for Nas in that one though, so it may have just been Will being influenced?

http://youtu.be/VDbUBN99xvc

Also hear Nas in “Chasing Forever”(one of Will’s best songs IMO), which he co-wrote.
