If I recall, we debated a lot on here. I don’t think our music opinions are identical at all. I like his singing for what it is; it works with the music to create a mood. I feel the same way about Curtis. I wouldn’t bet on him in a singing contest against Aretha or Smokey, but his vocals work in the context of his songs.

At this point, I like Phonte’s sung songs more than his rap songs. Most rappers don’t put a lot of thought into song structure. I have fallen into the same trap a lot myself. This is why I find most rap songs boring to listen to, after almost 40 years of hearing verse, chorus, verse. 16, 8, 16. Rap is also word intensive. If you don’t have a topic that deserves as many words as the average rap verse, it’s gonna get drawn out pretty fast.
