3012570, Oddisee & Phonte EP coming in 2019
Posted by Anonymous, Sat Dec-15-18 07:54 AM
Per Oddisee’s Instagram...

They performed together last night at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts.

Anyone go?

Hopefully they do a whole album.
3012571, Great news

I agree...ideally all Oddisee beats and Phonte raps...Oddisee's a great producer but I'm good on his lyrics
3012574, Oddisee is an underrated rapper imo
Posted by Anonymous, Sat Dec-15-18 12:39 PM
His only flaw is he sounds exactly the same on every song.
3012582, couldn't agree more
Posted by , Sat Dec-15-18 07:27 PM
He is a technically proficient rapper who def takes story lines beyond the usual subjects. But at a full albums length it starts to feel homogenized.

3012584, Yep agree with both you guys.
Posted by Brew, Sun Dec-16-18 02:00 AM
"People Hear What They See" is such a dope album to me from a production standpoint but halfway thru I get so bored by his flow.
3012585, I think I mentioned this before
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Dec-16-18 07:01 AM
It’s not his flow to me...it’s his diction.

No matter what vibe of the song, he attacks the beat the same way vocally as opposed to matching the feeling.

His flow and rhyme scheme definitely switch up though.

I think it the reason some people say that he comes off heavy-handed or preachy.
3012597, Yea I said "flow" for lack of a better term but you nailed it and I agree.
Posted by Brew, Sun Dec-16-18 01:33 PM
It's his diction, his tone, his presence ... always the same.

^^This is my problem. I don't mind the way he attacks beats.
Weird thing is, he's the ONLY rapper I find too preachy. I love KRS, and tons of "conscious" rappers that get criticized for being "holier than thou". Never really bothers me. All rappers preach some lifestyle or another.
The only time I feel like I'm being talked down to by a rapper, is when I'm listening to Oddisee. I think its because he's "humble-bragging"...or that he's just not clever/sharp enough lyrically to make his humble-brags work, imo.
3012607, Me too and I think you nailed it
Posted by Stadiq, Sun Dec-16-18 08:56 PM

He just isn’t creative or clever enough to pull
off being as preachy as he is.

He also doesn’t seem to open up about his own
faults/mistakes etc.

Even if you compare him to Tay- obviously
Phonte is 50x the rapper he is. But Tay’s music
is also honest/sincere/relatable.

Oddisee is none of that.

I’ve tried several times, and I can’t get in to him

Repetitive flow + boring content + talking down to me?

Nah.

Beats are cool I guess, though there are easily
20 producers I’d be more hyped about working
with Tay

Great news...brothers gonna eventually come to appreciate the genius of Oddisee...
3012579, And Phonte/Black Thought/Rhymefest?
Posted by quikfit, Sat Dec-15-18 02:16 PM
Is that still happening?
3013176, Rhymefest doesn't seem like he fits there.

3012581, nice to hear

Just rocked some Diamond District the other day.

Interesting to see how this collab sounds. We could probably string together two accapella's to a dope Oddisee beat and get a taste.

3012587, Hope this is one of those things where....

"We only planned on doing 5-6 songs, but we hit a stride so we did 12."

Hope they tour afterwards too!
3012588, I’ve long wanted a Big Krit/Phonte project, but this will do!
Posted by DJR, Sun Dec-16-18 10:33 AM
I’m so glad Phonte is regularly rapping again.

And I LOVE Foreign Exchange, but it was just too early for rapping Phonte to be gone for good. He’s too good at it.

3012590, good news..phonte desperately needs good beats
Posted by Hellyeah, Sun Dec-16-18 10:55 AM
3012594, ^^^theres always one
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Dec-16-18 01:05 PM
So his two solos had wack beats?
3012599, his second one, yes
Posted by Hellyeah, Sun Dec-16-18 03:58 PM
3012608, Yeah once my excitement wore off
Posted by Stadiq, Sun Dec-16-18 08:58 PM

I realized there were 3-4 great songs + cheap
sounding filler

Damn shame.
3012669, not wack but
Posted by fontgangsta, Mon Dec-17-18 12:55 PM
>So his two solos had wack beats?

plenty of room for improvement in the production dept, yes
3012601, Glad to hear this
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sun Dec-16-18 07:24 PM
Looking forward to this.
3012613, Yeah, I went to the show. Mini Little Brother Reunion with Pooh
Posted by Pamalama, Sun Dec-16-18 09:57 PM
It was a pretty good show. Seeing Phonte do So Help Me God in the Kennedy Center was surreal, lol.
3012614, Dope. I saw the IG photo with Pooh in it
Posted by DJR, Sun Dec-16-18 10:11 PM
I wondered if he performed too. Great that they’re rocking together again. Easily top 3 favorite rap group for me.
3012657, lol it did not say the ep was coming next year
Posted by Small Pro, Mon Dec-17-18 12:20 PM
only pointed out bc these things never seem to happen when actual release dates/time frames get officially announced, let alone alluded to
3012660, Lol yeah I was like... that's not exactly what oddisee said but... gon'head
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Dec-17-18 12:33 PM
3012687, I guess it didn’t technically say that but
Posted by Anonymous, Mon Dec-17-18 06:45 PM
“I got Phonte to agree to do an EP with me” followed by “2019 is murder” pretty much alludes to that. *shrugs*
3012742, I was there...flew down from Rhode Island
Posted by ChampD1012, Wed Dec-19-18 08:35 PM
Recorded both sets...haven't posted them yet...

Epic Night to say the least...

3012838, He could do stand-up
Posted by , Tue Dec-25-18 10:33 PM
Shit, he DID do stand up during this event. I know Phonte is naturally a funny cat. But he got stand-up chops. Looks like it was a great night.

3013120, nice transition from TWYDI to Lovin It
Posted by JtothaI, Mon Jan-07-19 06:34 PM
The chord at the beginning of TWYDI always get me. Then Pooh coming out...man takes me back. Thanks for sharing.
3013129, very dope, thanks!!!

3013175, dude probably put hours into crafting a set and...
Posted by spirit, Sun Jan-13-19 02:25 AM
...now anybody can see it for free (and Google gets most of the benefit because every click adds to their online ad dominance)...whereas pre-cameraphone days, you could keep rocking the same set throughout a tour, now you get to the next town and they've already seen that set on Youtube. I'd say if you plan on seeing Tay live in 2019, you should probably not click that. If you like being surprised anyway...some people watch a bootleg of a whole movie before they go to theater to see it LOL

On one hand, I feel like everything would be more energetic if the crowd was fully engaged instead of watching a show through their phone and not getting hype because they're trying to keep their hand steady...

on the other hand, there are people all over the world who will probably never get to see Tay live because they live in rural Yemen or wherever...and Youtube is where they can plug in.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

3013227, When I actually watched it, my point became moot
Posted by spirit, Mon Jan-14-19 08:53 PM
Dude was out of breath by the second song. He obviously didn’t spend much time rehearsing that. I cut it off when he urged what appeared to be a half white crowd to repeat the hook “so help me god, I’ll murder you n——s”. Um. No.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

3013231, Eh...I recorded it because I know how rare he does rap sets. LOL
