2995332, Illmatic vs Everything
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Sep-12-17 08:35 PM
First, I know not everyone feels that Illmatic is the greatest hip-hop album of all-time so please save your replies in which you tell me "Album "X" is better than Illmatic anyway".

This is a different post.

Illmatic is 10 tracks, 9 songs and 1 intro and one could make the case that it benefits from its length because it has less opportunity to get knocked off the rails with a less-than-stellar track.

So my question is, what album, if broken down to just 10 tracks (whether that's 10 songs or 9 tracks and an intro) do you feel would be better than Illmatic?

For example, are the best 10 tracks from an album like Cuban Linx better than Illmatic whereas maybe you feel the full album as it stand now isn't quite as good due to some joints that aren't straight A's?

We are obviously nitpicking here but post up what album you feel would be better and post the 10 tracks you would select.

GO!

That's a good ass option right there.

I could even put Y'all Scared in there for the Goodie collab.
2995352, I really don't understand the Synthesizer hate
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Sep-13-17 10:32 AM
or just lack of love a lot of folks have for it.
I really dig that song.

2995366, Yeah, he's wildin' on that one
Posted by Anonymous, Wed Sep-13-17 01:35 PM
I love Wheelz of Steel now, but in the North when that dropped, it wasn't a favorite at all.

It has a different vibe and feel than the rest of the album. Which is fine because it's still cohesive and fits but the increased bpm's sets it apart where I wouldn't mind losing it.
2995384, Yea Wheelz of Steel would have to be, like, a bonus track for me.
Posted by Brew, Wed Sep-13-17 02:44 PM
I can't take any of the above tracks out personally, I like that 10 track album ... but I can't lose Wheelz of Steel.

My bad, I didn't see it somehow..

Aside from Heaven and Hell that was the first song I heard prior to the release of the album. I remember listening in awe at it.. awesome song!
2995566, I believe it was the first single
Posted by Anonymous, Sat Sep-16-17 06:56 AM
Yeah it's one of the best on the album. I would actually want to keep Heaven Or Hell

>Gold is my shit!

Mine too. I could live with that or Living in the World Today.

>Did you exclude BIBLE because it's Killah Priest?

Yes. Figure with 10 cuts, I'm leaving off songs that don't feature the album's artist. So, like, as much as I like Faster Blade and Assassination Day, I'd leave them off a ten-song version of Iron Man.

Speaking of which...
2995354, Only change I would make is

Put Gold in place of duel of the iron mic
2995374, I loved "Gold," but "Duel of the Iron Mic" is so raw lyrically
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Sep-13-17 02:04 PM
Three of my favorite verses on the album.
2995341, No One Can Do It Better
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Sep-13-17 02:31 AM
Just take off "Beautiful But Deadly" and the two interludes, and that would do it.
2996297, RE: No One Can Do It Better
Posted by ry 213, Fri Oct-06-17 08:51 AM
It’s already better than illmatic untouched
2995348, Ready To Die
Posted by Oak27, Wed Sep-13-17 08:41 AM
1. Intro
2. Things Done Changed
3. Gimme the Loot
4. Warning
5. Ready to Die
6. The What
7. Juicy
8. Everyday Struggle
9. Big Poppa
10. Unbelievable

There's enough great songs on this album that you don't need to take up a spot with the intro, but that intro is a classic, sets up the album perfectly and leads into "Things Done Changed" so well that I couldn't leave it off.

BTW great post idea. Gonna make playlists with the condensed versions of a bunch of albums now.

2995437, you could pick any ten you want and still have a classic album
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Sep-14-17 07:28 AM
because there isn't a hair out of place on it. The Mall is nowhere near as bad as people like to say.
2995445, With that said
Posted by Anonymous, Thu Sep-14-17 08:53 AM
I played the album through the other day and it just feels too long.

After Make 'Em Pay I'm pretty spent so that probably amplifies the distaste for The Mall for some.

Still a classic.
2995447, I could see people feeling like that
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Sep-14-17 09:18 AM
Guru really laid it out there on that ablum, there is a lot of visceral emotion on that album, even in the sample choices. That's what makes it a masterpiece. I can let it ride and I never get tired of hearing it.
2996108, Yeah that hook is as bad as it gets.
Posted by BSharp, Sat Sep-30-17 08:29 PM

Fuck that skit if it means we need to leave off that joint
2995410, Not feeling it, but I debated between Temp's Rising
Posted by j., Wed Sep-13-17 08:09 PM
and Cradle To The Grave

There's really no outright wack tracks or "aight" filler on The Infamous, Hav and P were on fire and could do no wrong at the time
2995420, Cradle To The Grave is easily the weakest cut
Posted by Anonymous, Wed Sep-13-17 09:32 PM
You got some suspect as statements up in here bro lol.

Start of Your Ending is one of the best openers of all time.
2995453, the best thing about it is the loop
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Sep-14-17 10:02 AM
that guitar/bass loop is pretty serious. Probably would've been better put to use as a short intro to the song.
2995414, one of my fav snares of all time

2995395, I think that album is strangely overrated

It's dope but never knew people had it on the bulletproof list until I came to okayplayer.
2995396, yeah....naw
Posted by liveguy, Wed Sep-13-17 04:55 PM
Album is hella underrated.

It's always one of those high quality joints that people tend to forget about for some reason.

Supreme display of lyricism and creativity.

Beats ridiculous and most of the production was Monch/Prince Po.

Excellent follow up album to their debut.

What I like most about the album is that it's like "Releasing Hypnotical Gases" expanded in album form.

Dope album for real, and in absolutely no way, overrated.
2995404, May be I didn't explain that right
Posted by Anonymous, Wed Sep-13-17 07:40 PM
It is underrated to the masses AND overrated by the underground.

That's what I guess I meant by strangely.

Dope album but I've legit seen it listed as the best album of 1994.

Shit is not on that level.
2995411, it's def top 5 in 94
Posted by j., Wed Sep-13-17 08:15 PM
94 was the greatest year in hip hop, not up for discussion

In my top 5 I got

Illmatic

The Sun Rises in The East

Hard To Earn

Honorable mention: Resurrection
2995418, FIXED: it's def not top 10 in 94

2995465, I can most certainly get with these being considered on par or better...

Nas

Jeru
Gang Starr
Pete & CL ---> this album was my ISHT!!
Beatnuts
OC
Common

To your point, 94 was spectacular in every sense...

So many classics.

The end of the Golden Era...

They went out with a bang!
2995468, ^^^ is put Stress in the Top 15

Nas
Big
Red
Pete & CL
Gang Starr
Jeru
OC
Common
Outkast
Scarface

Method Man
Beatnuts
Artifacts
Beastie Boys

94 has a ton of great albums. Stress is dope and is in that list but I just shake my head when I see it listed at the top of the list or top 5 because it feels like people do it just to be different.
2995540, Nah, they are loved and it's just really strong and was their definitive album
Posted by natenate101, Fri Sep-15-17 05:26 PM
Right when it came out I loved it and recognized it as a complete statement.
I'll take it over Red's album, Jeru, Method Man and some others. Top 10 rating from an underground head isn't shocking. Top 5 rating just means it resonated with that person more vs some of the other undeniable classics. Similar to Masta Ace's Slaughtahouse which I rate higher than many other classic albums of that time because everything about it just worked to me.

2995484, Yeah Inshallal and the title track were stand outs.

2995387, So looking at this post
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Wed Sep-13-17 03:43 PM
If illmatic was done the way Nas wanted, it wouldn't be the classic that we love today? They rushed released it due to bootlegging and that's why we got the short tracklist. Knowing Nas history, some duds would've made the cut if he continued working on it lol
2995389, True but also looking at this post
Posted by Anonymous, Wed Sep-13-17 03:52 PM
There are albums listed that I still don't think are better.

I love Dare Is A Darkside but outside of Can't Wait, that album doesn't reach the highs Illmatic does.

Same for a lot of these albums posted.
2995409, According to Serch, Nas recorded 11 tracks for Illmatic
Posted by j., Wed Sep-13-17 08:06 PM
the one that didn't make it was this one:

Some lines made it though, this track was on his demo tape
2995423, Just 11 huh ?
Posted by Brew, Wed Sep-13-17 10:03 PM
I don't have any links or anything but I could've sworn I read that he had a lot more tracks but that these 10 were the only certainties and once the deadline came he just submitted that.

You're probly right I just always thought otherwise for some reason.
2995424, Who produced that track btw ?

I kinda love it. Never heard it, shockingly.
2995436, Jae Supreme

2995402, I would take off Midnight and add CYH

but how they didn't get a 5 for that album is beyond me.
2995392, Stakes Is High could've benefitted from some trimming
Posted by natenate101, Wed Sep-13-17 04:20 PM
I love it all, but would always say Buhloone is stronger because of its concise nature.

1. Supa Emcees
2. Tha Bizness
3. Brakes
4. Itzsoweezee
5. Big Brother
6. Down Syndrome
7. Pony Ride
8. Stakes is High
9. Sunshine
2995422, Think I agree with this actually.
Posted by Brew, Wed Sep-13-17 10:02 PM
I love Stakes is High and think it's classic but agree it could use a *little* trimming, and also agree that BMS is rated higher in their discog because of its brevity. Both amazing albums tho.

I'll have to come back and make my own "top 10" list for Stakes but I may end up just repping yours once I think about it haha.
2995541, Right on. Was curious if anyone would add some of the tracks
Posted by natenate101, Fri Sep-15-17 05:32 PM
from the end of Side 1, like Island Degrees, Dinninit, or Dog Eat Dog? They are decent songs, but elevated mostly by the lyrics and delivery. The concepts and beats are kinda vanilla, but Pos and Dave bring it. Hard to imagine those would've stayed on if Prince Paul was still involved. They screamed out that this was a new and more mature De La, for better or worse.
2996334, You have one more you can add

There are only 9 tracks listed.

I hated to take off Escape and I prefer the Get On the Mic remix to the original (double that for I Got A Love) but the original fits better on the album.

Considering this is a Pete Rock album I was tempted to remix swap, but that would have gone against the spirit of the post....SPINOFF post!
2995444, I mean I *LOVE* this album but agree that it could use slight trimming.
Posted by Brew, Thu Sep-14-17 08:25 AM
And you did a good job here. Haha.
2995456, LOL thanks and let me tell you it wasn't easy

and honestly there's no real wrong way to do it because those Pete and CL albums don't really have any superfluous songs on them. Everything serves a purpose. I went through this about a dozen times and just settled on the last tracklist I did LOL

The I Got A Love remix got mad rotation and ended up on so many mixtapes I made for cats back in the day. For some reason I didn't have the Get On The Mic remix until way later...but gotdamn! I agree with the argument of albums benefitting from being short and tight ( even if I also really enjoy the attempts at epics spanning into multiple disc range - ie Wu Tang Forever. ) Illmatic certainly benefits from this. Trimming the fat is always a good idea - though that also lessens the chances for deep tracks and opportunities for experimentation. Also one mans throwaway track is another mans favorite track - especially when experimentation comes into play.

That being said - the coffee seems to be working better after flipping through the tracks above! I'm gonna go hurt myself by tryin to break through a wall like the Hulk now.

Posted by mrhood75, Fri Sep-22-17 11:43 AM
2995865, That's reaaaal tough for me cause I agree Stranded ...
Posted by Brew, Fri Sep-22-17 11:47 PM
... needs to be there but I would hate to see Snoop's intro/the vintage Death Row *jail cell door* "welcome to Death Row" go.

Maybe we can do what Anonymous did with "Stolen Moments 1-3" and just splice the Intro with "Fuck w/Dre Day" (they kinda work together as it is) and get the best of both worlds haha.

In all seriousness I need both "Stranded" and "Lyrical Gangbang" cause Kurupt stole the show (and maybe sneakily the album ???) with his verses on those tracks. Come to think of it, hammam must have an anti-Kurupt bias being that neither track was included in that list ....

2995861, i saw a schoolboy interview during some album rollout
Posted by hammam, Fri Sep-22-17 10:20 PM
where he talked about how a song on one of his albums (i can't remember) was inspired by "let's get high" and how that song captured the LA House Party vibe perfectly and how he wanted to make a song like that.

2996245, Damn I wonder what song! Yea, that's really what "Let's get high" is too
