Simply a way to be reminded about and hear a song you haven't listened to in a while or to be put on to some new shit...

Reply with the title and post a link in the message of a personal classic that you feel needs some more shine...

I attached it to your "Where Was Heaven" reply because both songs give me that same feel. 100's of rappers of different skill levels have made these types of songs, but somehow those two managed to resonate with me more.

2981943, My absolute shit
Posted by ChiefRocka, Thu Jan-12-17 03:11 PM
This song, for some reason more than almost any other, can viscerally take me back to where I was when I used to listen to it back in the day. It was when Napster was first poppin off, I was like 13 and this shit was still unreleased because of the uncleared Anita Baker sample (which I had no idea about at the time) but it was floating around online and it was one of the first mp3's I remember downloading and loving, I used to put it on CDr mixes and throw that shit in my silver & black Shockwave(anybody remember them shits?)and ride my bike during the summertime to it. Every time I hear it I'm transported back to that time and place.

Years later when I heard "Caught Up In the Rapture" I was like... http://replygif.net/i/1408.gif

The moment where Open Mike drops THAT line ("I only know 5 songs and they're all Gucci's Lemonaaaaaaade!") just as that ill ass horn sample comes in... goddamn!

This is one of those guys who will NEVER really "make it".
Nothing groundbreaking, just a nice hood style "Wonder Years" type of joint. There's a tinge of sadness knowing that his style of rap isn't marketable enough to better his situation.

2978541, what do you like about it? i've always been on the fence with him
Posted by bearfield, Mon Nov-21-16 06:17 PM
that "never rhyme on the 4 and always rhyme very close to other rhymes" style he does never quite clicked with me. it was like endless internals without the external to anchor them. i felt like i was spending more energy than i wanted to trying to catch the rhyme patterns, and that detracted from the overall experience

some great beats on that project though

This one is kinda buried between all the flashier songs on the album. But I always really get into that groove when it's on. I absolutely love that riff as a loop. I could see D'Angelo making a song outta it.

I always like reading about albums' backstories, and there's plenty of that.

I also liked all the stories on J Prince, and how their relationship went kinda south.

Scarface has always been a mystery to me--and he even admits to keeping his public persona that way. So most of the personal stuff in the book was all news to me.

I'd LOVE to see a Scarface biopic based off this book.

This is from the album "Smell The Urgency" that should have come out around 03/04 featuring production by Luke Vibert. Blurum self-released it on Bandcamp a few years ago and that's how I finally heard it. It's fucking sick, of course, aside from maybe a couple of duds where Blurum's flow isn't working. Posted by micMajestic, Thu Jan-19-17 04:49 PM
Crazy how much Saukrates sounded like Prince Po on this record. After this, he started sounding like GZA.

Why the hell didn't Marvel get push? That verse is still crazy. I guess they wanted to push all the guys that might seem "cool" to the audience in the states. I mean Choclair, Saukrates & Kardinal might have been a little more flashy, but I don't think they were nicer. I always thought all three lacked lyrical depth.

Looking around the landscape today, you might forget that a time like this existed. Back then, there were a lot of people that were really good at rapping. So many, that you couldn't keep track of all of them.

2982298, Lord Have Mercy - "Paint Your Face" .... how did he get shelved?
Posted by micMajestic, Thu Jan-19-17 05:03 PM
I remember hearing that he was having a lot of disputes with Busta. Even some people saying that Busta was jealous. That would be weird, since he was Busta's artist. But when you hear this record, you realize sonically and stylistically they occupied the exact same space.

It's like if EPMD had put out "Knucklehedz" group while EPMD was still popping. Knuckleheadz was using the exact EPMD blueprint, if they got popular they'd replace EPMD to some extent.

2982301, Killah Priest - The Offering (2007)
Posted by spitfire, Thu Jan-19-17 05:24 PM
To me this is a personal classic.
One of the best Wu releases post Supreme Clientele even.
But i feel like it hasn't gotten its due. Critically acclaimed, but hardly mentioned.
My boys did some joints on here so maybe my objectivity is tainted,
however this album is at the very least underrated.

https://youtu.be/fcWvzNDYi9A

Priest his pen is almost unparalleled on this album. Balancing his esoteric parables with street mind states. Straight off the bat in the excellent intro he goes in furiously almost giving MF Doom a run for his money. He showcases so many flows effortlessly. At times channeling the greats, like Rakim on the virtuoso nod to his idols, 'How Many' and Slick Rick on 'Osiris Eyes', or going head to head with celebrated contemporary Nas on the 4th disciple produced 'Gun for Gun', but throughout he is clearly his own man.

On the cinematic 'Melodic pt2' He trades verses with Sunz of Men fam Hell Razah. Priest spins a vivid story that goes from listening to Al Green's greatest hits to fucking some aliens with impressive ease.

Melodic pt2 (featuring Hell Razah)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxpdA4FRoDw

One of my personal favorites is 'Ghetto Jezus'. Over dreamy keys and a driving bass, Priest stays true to his name and turns bible verse into tongue in cheek ghetto imagery.
It is followed by 'The Offering' where Priest again shows he can hang with the best when it comes to pure lyricism. 'Happy' near the end is clearly inspired by Pac, but the way Priest pulls this off is so impressive it is almost like he is showing off...

the offering
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7xIxOH3zzM

Happy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6GWeNhi12k

The Offering album suffers from some tracks on here that already sound dated or are just not up the par with the rest of the album, but there is so many great tracks on here it is weird to me this album didn't reach more people at the time.

Its sequence lets Killah Priest showcase his many sides and flows. A journey that that feels like a true blue Wu-Tang album, but most definitely in the chamber that Killah Priest has created for himself. The beats are there for most of the album, the guests like Nas and Immortal Technique all put in work and Killah Priest is rapping his ass off throughout, making it even more puzzling that it's so underrated.

I think the Bob James horns adds a little something. But really it's the vocal sample that is the biggest difference. I prefer the Biz Mark sample over Method Man's sample.
2982742, Lmao Shyheim and Meth are SOOOO faded in the Shoalin Style video
Posted by micMajestic, Fri Jan-27-17 06:49 PM
>this beat better...Anotha Level or Shyheim- Shaolin Style

Both beats are good, both hooks are dope, both songs had entertaining videos, but I'll take Shyheim & "Squig" rapping over Anotha Level all day.
2982839, part of the reason I prefer this version is...

Overall these dudes were corny, but they had some decent production. The one with the high voice is damn near unlistenable.

Cool Breeze & ONP could have done a whole project full of songs like this. Crazy in retrospect. I've always peeped how TI was influenced by Cool Breeze too.

this song doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album. At the time this song was made, he may have looked at it as his dumbed down boom bap radio single. But the song stands the test of time. I like a lot of Aceyalone's slightly dumbed down boom bap records. "Knownots", "The Balance", "Gimme Five Feet", "Hardship" etc.
