Hey?

How's everyone doing?

Does anyone know of other hip-hop artists that deliver great optimistic lyrics? I am familiar with some, but are there any other ones out there?

2970726, We definitely should get a list of positive rap songs going...
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Aug-09-16 07:34 PM
Preferable without cussing.

I'm always trying to put the titles aside so I can play it with my son in the car.

Oddisee - That's Love is a great start
2970727, As far as new guys,

Oddisee is one of the more positive artists out there.

Lecrae has some skills and obviously has content which is spiritually encouraging.

I haven't checked for K-Os in a while, but he had an album out this year and his lyrical content has always been positive.

Lupe's music is positive, but he does drop the occasional curse word.

I'm sure I'm missing some other contemporary rappers who are both positive and clean, but their name is escaping me.
2970759, I feel like ''The Good Fight'' was clean all the way through

Or real close to curse-free at the least.

I think the feature drops one and Oddisee does mention a flesh light which isn't a cuss but content-wise doesn't fit the rest of the album...lol
2970767, haha...''dad, what's a flesh light?''

2970771, Yeah, in an interview Oddisee said
Posted by bills, Wed Aug-10-16 01:10 PM
he was done cussin on records, mostly for financial reasons
2970822, I wonder what that means exactly?
Posted by Ishwip, Thu Aug-11-16 12:52 PM
>he was done cussin on records, mostly for financial reasons

Not sure I've ever heard of cussin negatively impacting rappers finances?

I'll see if I can locate the interview tomorrow night
2971193, He mentioned that he was losing money with explicit lyrics.
Posted by BNueve, Thu Aug-18-16 08:24 AM
I'm assuming it's basically from the demographic that listens to him that has kids/family.

I think he's also said stuff about it messing up mechanical / sync opportunities as well.

i don't see how ANYONE can hate on him

relative to this post as a whole, it's hard to pin down what "positive" means

the no-cussing disclaimer is much more specific

old(er) school music is a trove to mine (Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, Rakim, Tribe, etc) unless you're talking a more specific/recent timeframe
2970824, I went to college with Lecrae lol.
Posted by SP1200, Thu Aug-11-16 01:44 PM
Man, nobody in my clique took him seriously as a rapper tbh lol.
He seemed like a pretty boy (kappa) rap hobbyist at the time. Boy
were we wrong LOL.
2970817, (No) Malice...maybe Stalley
Posted by Overqualified, Thu Aug-11-16 12:07 PM
although his recent output has banked slightly left, he doesn't curse in his raps and his records are pretty positive. I like his new song on Mass Appeal's "The Land" soundtrack, Frequency High:

2970821, Phanatik from Cross Movement
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Aug-11-16 12:46 PM
His first solo album "The Incredible Walk"
was amazing. His solo cuts from their albums
are always the sickest, such as "Holy Culture"
or "Card Shark." One of the sickest rappers
ever, period.

I kicked it with him in Philly when I was 17 lol (years ago!). He kept calling me "young man" lol. Good dude!!

Posted by Manuels Burrito, Sat Aug-13-16 10:21 AM
Back in the 90s his lyrics weren't as positive (more grouchy). Now his content leans more positive. I actually preferred the grouchy but appreciate and enjoy all of his work.
2971090, Strange Fruit Project...
Posted by HIM, Mon Aug-15-16 01:08 PM
Was in the ride with my son trying to think of what rap we could listen to that wouldn't totally corrupt his mind.

Strange Fruit Project was a great solution that I arrived at.
This joint was something that made me smile this weekend...

Also, if we are just talking about "clean lyrics", don't sleep on the fact that Rakim pretty much never curses on his songs. He does have the "n-word" in them but not in every single song like a lot of rappers do.
2971127, The Righteouz Knight: rugged sound with a positive message
Posted by fatboybrandon, Tue Aug-16-16 07:30 AM
I was surprised when i first heard this collective of MCs and a producer, I was expecting a soft sound overall but they get their point across about religion in a manner that rivals the aggression and skill of a group like Army Of The Pharoahs!

https://soundcloud.com/rapzilla/righteouz-knight-without-the-lord-imma-slave-ft-r-kitect-freestyle-fam

Shabazz The Disciple is positive at times, L.L. Cool J's Power Of God is an all-time favorite.
2971194, Speaking of clean/edited albums...
Posted by BNueve, Thu Aug-18-16 08:28 AM
Seems like only major label artists release clean versions of their albums now. Anyone know why other artists like a Phonte or Elzhi don't release clean albums? Is it a money issue? Just wondering.

Posted by thebigfunk, Mon Aug-22-16 10:32 AM
His positivity has been a real godsend for me over the last year or two as I've been struggling with work. I often use his stuff in the morning to help me get moving, get positive about what I need to do. Not to mention his productivity is inspiring and humbling, and I appreciate his general perspective. I've been meaning to do a solid playlist comprised of some of the best work from the last few albums.
