funky....

good job AFKAP....

I'm going to have to check the book out.... I saw the NPR interview....when you mentioned the rise in the popularity of soul music in Nigeria, and the music getting funkier... Does the music in the compilation represent a time after that, or prior to that... I checked out some tracks on youtube... Real cool man...

congrats and best wishes....
2964732, thanks, man.

>when you mentioned the rise in the popularity of
>soul music in Nigeria, and the music getting funkier... Does
>the music in the compilation represent a time after that, or
>prior to that...

The music on the comp represents the period after the vogue for soul music... that particular interview was actually kind of problematic for me because I was trying to talk about the music on the comp which is AFTER the soul era, but the interviewer was really fixated on talking about the music BEFORE and DURING the soul era.

I was a bit worried that it would give the audience false expectations about the music on the comp but they *kinda* fixed it in the editing lol
2964812, It's awesome...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu May-05-16 05:26 PM
Unfortunately, I've only heard it on spotify, I haven't been able to find a pysical copy here in sweden yet. looking forward to the book...
Tis era of rock (and funk!!!) is of course someting I old very dear and I have always dug to ear african takes on the style(s)-the z-rock hype of the last years should have gotten a lot of shit taken care of but unfortunately, when I went to Chingola, *literally* noone I asked knew were you could find vinyl-they looked at me like I was some kind of freak, LOL! I'm sure I'd have more luck in Lusaka but I don't know anyone there and its quite a trip... Whatever...

Anyway, dis alum is shit-hot and I'll pick it up as soon as I find it...
2964822, Hope you get to find it... first printing selling out fast.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Thu May-05-16 07:19 PM
Second printing should be coming soon... and in 2 weeks, Vol. 2 (which, in my opinion is MUCH hotter and heavier!)
2964826, Big congrats man

Know you've been working on this for a minute. Can't wait to blast it over the weekend and dig into the book.

2964867, Are all these songs reworkings?
Posted by muzuabo, Fri May-06-16 08:46 AM
The first is an obvious reworking of the Beatles song "Don't Let Me Down".
2964869, I'd say that song is more 'inspired by' than a reworking per se
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Fri May-06-16 08:49 AM
but no, all the songs are not like that... I'd say that's the only one on volume 1, I think... on volume 2 there's a cover WAR's "Slipping Into Darkness"
2965004, Congrats, AFKAP!

there's a listing for audio CD, and there's a listing for Hardcover... didn't prices, shipping info etc. All the same thing?
2965354, All the same.

Just hearing folks saying that they're feeling it is its own reward!
2966553, what is the difference in the books for the two volumes?
Posted by philpot, Sat May-28-16 12:12 AM
I copped vol 2 today

Appears to be the same exact book just a different CD but then some pages in the second volume are different, like the page numbers don't line up?

I know Egon likes to occasionally over charge for his labels product ($20 for a 12" single of Cocaine Parties in LA w/ no digital available for Madlib's not-wealthy fans LOLOL foh Egon) but I'm a bit annoyed at dropping 30 bucks for volume 2 of this when the book seems to be the same

No disrespect intended but can we get an explanation?
2967171, Yeah.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Sun Jun-05-16 09:45 PM
The book for volume 2 is mostly the same, except it doesn't have the chapter on OFO and instead has a lengthy chapter on the Funkees.

I know it's confusing and I think of it as a design flaw. But it wasn't my idea.

If anything, it sort of has me kind of upset because I worry that people might flip through the first few pages of the vol 2 book, assume it's just the same thing and not even discover the Funkees story--which I worked incredibly hard on and am rather proud of.

Yeah... I know it's a bit frustrating, though. My apologies.
2967271, really appreciate the explanation, thank you
Posted by philpot, Tue Jun-07-16 08:02 AM
2966797, Just ordered both volumes from Madlib's imprint site.
Posted by Numba_33, Tue May-31-16 05:45 PM
Do prior interviews go into detail in terms of how you linked up with the Stones Throw folks? Curious how that went down.
2967172, I don't think I ever discussed it publicly.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Sun Jun-05-16 09:49 PM
And frankly I can't even remember exactly how it happened.... a couple of streams converged all all at the same time.

1. back when I was blogging about African music around 2008, a distribution company reached out to me and offered to help me set up my own label. Turns out that company also distributes Stones Throw, so we were corporate siblings, so to speak

2. back when I was blogging about African music around 2008, I started communicating with another record collector in New Zealand and he was helping Stones Throw with possibly putting together a Nigerian compilation. I think he mentioned me to Egon.

3. Egon reached out to me.

All of these things kind of happened around the same time but I can't remember the exact sequence of events.
