2959424, Why was Jeru not able to get top notch production after Premier?
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Mon Mar-14-16 09:28 AM
Did dude get blackballed or something? Never knew what happened between him and Premier but he was one of the best emcees out of NYC during the mid 90s IMO. Two dope LPs with Premier and then the dropoff in quality. He couldn't get Pete Rock, Large Pro, etc to do some production? Does anybody know what happened?

I typed this while listening to Wrath of the Math. This album gets hated on but how can you hate on an album with Tha Frustrated Nigga, Tha Bullshit, Whatever, One Day, Revenge Of The Prophet (Part 5), Me Or The Papes, Too Perverted, Ya Playin' Yaself and Invasion?
2959425, It gets hated on?
Posted by , Mon Mar-14-16 09:32 AM
I feel like I always hear praise for those two, it's the follow ups that get gruff.

So I saw him perform about 6 years ago at this tiny bar in philly. Was kinda sad. I couldn't believe how short he was. I always thought he was a big dude. Added to the strangeness of a hipster crowd only half paying attention to him while performing in a corner.

When I first heard Come Clean I was like ........

Gang Starr Foundation was short with the exception of Big Shug. Seems like people had a problem with Jeru lyrically on Wrath.

disjointed flow sound less engaging. It's not like this for every song, but at least half of the beats lack energy.

And that's not to knock Jeru but I just think what he a Primo had worked perfectly.

People praise him for the disjointed flow while shitting on others for the same thing.

And that's really just because their chemistry worked so well and on top of that he had a message so he earned the respect for that.

My guess would be that other producers just saw his chemistry with Primo a hard act to follow.

Curious of who else came with that "disjointed flow" that you mentioned….????
2959449, that second LP is so shitty, man
Posted by Mash_Comp, Mon Mar-14-16 10:34 AM
He wasted a good 75% of those beats reading off the script. I don't think he wrote one rhyme to those beats.
2959450, I'm with you bruh
Posted by 13Rose, Mon Mar-14-16 10:39 AM
A couple of songs I could rock with but I've never owned it because I always thought it was overall weak sauce.

"Sun Rises.." is the classic, I love it, blah-blah, but I more regularly to this day bump "Wrath...".

Jeru's awkward flow and that era of Premier is my favorite of Premo's: the drums, the chops, the scratches, the mix. Don't care if it was cookie-cutter Premo, all them 96-ish to early 2000's beats are my sh*t.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

2959453, it's the timing of when that split happened
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Mar-14-16 10:45 AM
Jeru disengaged with Premier in the late '90s. I think he resurfaced with HEROZ4HIRE sometime in the early '00s. and while "100%" was cool, gat damn, the rest was some shit. possibly the worst time of hip-hop ever, esp. East Coast hip-hop. it was a hostile time for cats who rapped like Jeru...

2959465, I actually thought alotta HEROEZ4HIRE was dope. n/m

because I was digging much of the rhymes

but the beats sounded like some dank-ass "fuck commercial rap" nonsense. one in particular sounded really amateurish.

Seinfeld is still my shit
2961468, I completely forgot about that song...
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Apr-04-16 09:34 AM
still stand that the vast majority of those songs had some doo-doo production

2959455, Is it possible he didn't have the scratch?
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Mar-14-16 11:05 AM
The first two releases were on major labels, where he could afford to dole out top dollar for Premier. He's been uber indie since, so perhaps he didn't have the money to cut checks for other top level producers.
2959457, Very possible
Posted by Anonymous, Mon Mar-14-16 11:18 AM
Especially around that time.

I do think he could've gotten some underground producers though. Swizz, Timbo and those guys were starting to get big and probably charging a lot but then you had upcoming cats like Alchemist that he maybe could've gotten.
2959463, I think Jeru did his 3rd album by himself at D&D...

Is that a fact? Do you have a link where some of these stories are re-told? Looking from afar, he strikes me as a humble dude, but it sounds as if I'm completely wrong reading in between the lines of what you typed there.

2959579, Primo makes beats tailored for artists, he doesn't do beat tapes
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Tue Mar-15-16 11:52 AM
Most rappers want to be able to pick from stuff and take it with them, but Primo doesn't like working that way so he gets less work from major artists.
2959717, working with Malachi thr Nut Cracker ruined his rep...lol

I bet rappers where like "nigga wasting beats on his nephew and Shit?"
2959511, Jeru also burned bridges off-wax too

his live shows were horrible. dude couldn't remember his lines for sh*t.
2959512, This is a gotdamn lie... lol
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Mar-14-16 08:23 PM
maybe because it was VA and he sold most I
more records in NOVA than in any other market but he always killed it the 3 times we did shows with him.

He was always taking his shirt off and wearing flags like capes but those beats were so fucking hard he always shut shit down.

Anyway, from the conversations I had with Jeru he said the money got funny on the back end and they decided to part ways.

2959515, some funny ass stories chilling with Jeru
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Mar-14-16 08:52 PM
Jeru was a funny nigga. Not in a bad way, I mean dude had jokes for days. We brought him down to Richmond, VA back when we were in college. Dude was brutally honest about rappers when we asked him the scoop.

quotables like:
"if you get a girl back to your room on tour, immediately pull your dick out." She will either stay or leave but you won't waste all night trying to get ass. Big Daddy Kane told him this gem and I didn't believe it but then he said Barry White told Kane that shit. For some reason it went from "nigga you lying" to "somehow I believe he told y'all this Shit" My roommate tried it the next week. It didn't work.

"Musiq Soulchild wears his headwrap like a bitch... but he got mad bitches at his shows"

Jeru: "all rappers are actors, none of them are real thugs"
me: what about Beanie Seigel?
Jeru: well, he's not a rapper..lol

"Guru (rip) always gets robbed when he comes to my hood"

"common is cool but when he called me to hang out in BK I told him no funny hats..don't wear noo funny hats

We did a show with Jeru and Dan the Automator and Jeru kept calling him "Handsome Dan" because he had just finished the Handsome Boy Modeling Concept album. Dan was cool as Shit and he was a big ole softy. He wouldn't stop calling him handsome Dan tho... lol

but the best one was the night after the first show he did with us in Richmond. My drummer had a fly Asian chick but they weren't official but....

Anyway, we are all at a house party getting it in and then we drive Jeru and his DJ back to his hotel room. This nigga hops out, turns to the driver's girl and says "you coming or you staying?"

She looks at the driver and says "sorry" and hops out the whip. Jeru says:

"Peeeeeace"

We drive for 4 blocks before my boy is like "Wtf just happened?" and the dude driving claims they weren't a couple but that shit had to hurt. Earlier that night he was bragging about her.

2959517, this is funny, lol.

because he was hollering at dude's chicks. I get it, because most dudes will see a chick with a dude, and assume they are together. I guess his thing was, if she's with you, she's not going to come with me...

…I met Jeru at a show one time, I was just a kid and had my copy of Wrath in hand, and while duke was signing it, he was talking to some other cat about how he was trying to bag up "some white groupie bitches"….just thought it was kinda strange, being that he was on some black righteous steez….anyway, I'm a fan of dukes work, talented, original off kilter flow…never really understood his fall off….don't know if it was mentioned, but on his last release, "The Hammer", he has production by The Beatnuts and Extra P….too little too late?
2959713, man, the drummer was so confident she wouldnt fall for Jerus game

2961472, Because he was never considered a top notch rapper?
Posted by johnbook, Mon Apr-04-16 10:21 AM
2) He wasn't part of Tha Dogg Pound?
3) He never had enough money.
4) He was not a trust fund kid
5) Add your own reasons.

Sadly, he entered hip-hop at a time when it was all about winning a popularity contest. His debut album was great but the moment it seems he "stepped out" of that may have meant he wasn't getting certain "top names" to produce his work and that may have been due to budgets or simply wanting to work with someone else. Whatever the situation, it failed him. As producers were becoming and wanting to be "the star", that nicely gave Jeru the boot. It's the reason why people still talk about Group Home's debut album despite the fact it was one of the first major label piece of shits of the 90's. But "OH, THE PRODUCTION WAS HOT!"

2961548, He Wanted Nothing To Do With Premier, Guru, Or Gang Starr...
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Apr-04-16 10:44 PM
...foundation or anybody they worked with, he wanted to separate himself from them just on the fact he felt like Group Home got jerked on their first album and that Guru would take Premier's side about any issues he had as well.

The thing that gets me is that he also didn't want any Premier-esque type beats/producers which is why he never got any production from DITC, any of the Boston producers, or even later on from kats like Ninth, cause he wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't carried by Premier's sound and that he could do everything himself, I did like "99%" song but everything else on that album was garbage, and so was the female rapper he introduced Miz Marvel (she must have been his girlfriend/wifey).

I will say that his fourth & fifth albums had better production but by six or seven years after doing his second album with Premo and embarrassing himself with that third album and being in a new era where he was even more underground than when he first came out, the Damajage was done & forgotten.

I'm telling you if he got production from Amed (of DITC), Ill-Boogie, Madsol-Desar, 4th Disciple, and Mathematics for his third album, he would've still been in the pocket for a few more years.

What's the story on group home getting jerked? Never heard about that
2961627, Cause Premier Handled His Business Is All
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Apr-05-16 08:00 PM
Premier made a bet to Jaz-O & Guru that he could direct and produce an album for Group Home and make them sound dope, and that's what exactly what he did but since he overseen the entire album and produced all but two tracks, he got the majority of the publishing/checks and Jeru saw the same thing go down with him & Premier.

To me that's what a producer suppose to get, for not just making beats but giving an artist direction and making sure their vocals sound dope but sometimes rappers think it was them not the producer, smh.
