Posted by High Society, Sat Jan-30-16 10:39 PM
anybody up on these cats from Buffalo?

They are clearly influenced by Only Built and Ironman era Wu.

Fly street shit. Soul samples.
Almost none of their stuff has hooks though.
Guess still learning.

appears Skyzoo and Roc Marciano cosign.

Conway is way better than Westside.

Also, we can now lay to rest that idea that cornball brother supreme Donald Glover was the mind behind the Big Ghostface persona.
2955831, Ha, I didn't know that was a rumor.

yo - just got up on em about a week ago....with that joint they did with Roc Marciano

dopest shyt I've heard in a long while...reminds me of the first time I heard Wu f'ril.....

that "Mr.T" joint produced by Apollo Brown?? holy shyt - crazy...

been on all they shyt heavy for about a week now....
2955922, I heard Gunn on the Skyzoo joint and based off his cosign

I checked out Hitler Wears Hermes and I've been following them ever since.

Hitler Wears Hermes is like the story of Jimmy Jump before Frank White came home
2955991, Westside Gunn is my cousin's best friend- I love that guy
Posted by stone_phalanges, Tue Feb-02-16 11:07 AM
They all used to rap back in the day But he stuck with it and WOW I'm really feelin' it.

I'm probably super biased but He's one of my favorites out right now (Westside Gunn)

I like Conway too. I just wish both of them would stop releasing their music on soundcloud. I'd gladly purchase but I can't find anywhere to cop.

I used to get fish from Rolacks all the time, That video make me miss home.
2956370, they released Hitler Wears Hermes 1 & 2 or maybe 2 & 3 on vinyl.
Posted by High Society, Sat Feb-06-16 02:22 AM
like 150 copies each.

super limited. all soldout on their bandcamp.

love the idea of building your fan base through youtube vids,
word of mouth, clothing, GOOD MUSIC of course, and limited physical
product. makes you keep constantly checking for them because
might not know when they'll drop some kind of physical product again.

I have to ask though, PLEASE, no shots... just genuinely curious...

I know Conway was shot, thought was shot in neck, maybe wrong.

Can someone tell me without being a dick why his mouth is like that?

I think Conway is the better lyricist.
Westside Gunn has the better voice to me, but I'm also
an old school higher pitched tone Ghostface as opposed to that bullshit he doing now.

he been working on SC2 for at least 5-6 years now.
He said he knows what beats looking for and that's why taking so long.
He said he knows what he needs to make it a true companion piece
to SC... so I believe him. Also why I think he's been doing
the Adrian Younge projects, and the BBNG EP... put some money in his pocket so he can take his time on SC2.

Cause Apollo Kids was pretty garbage. and the Younge and BBNG projects - he sounds like he's reading off a sheet of looseleaf.

He needs to ditch the storyline their giving him, and him trying to creat characters to fit the music... and just go back to super vivid
stream of conscious: The Forest, The Sun, stories like Shakey Dog,
Holla, verse on Impossible, Stroke of Death, Wisdom Body solo, Hollow Bones verse, etc.

Still have hopes for DOOMSTARKS. He was killing the songs when they were being released. He still had the high pitched Ghost voice we all came to love and recognize when we'd catch the blast from a hype verse.

Sorry to hijack Conway and Westside Gunn, but I mean... they do clearly love Only Built and Ironman anyways...

2965870, RE: they released Hitler Wears Hermes 1 & 2 or maybe 2 & 3 on vinyl.

I'm guessing this speaks to both dudes not placing a big value on selling physical product since sales for CDs and vinyl aren't all that big compared to 10 years ago. Pretty aggravating to have to stalk social media for these guys to have a shot of coping a CD or vinyl release from both guys. Hopefully when they get bigger in fame, they can get a bigger and better distribution deal to make their physical product more readily available.
2965898, the CDs seem to be more readily available.
Posted by High Society, Mon May-16-16 08:19 PM
2970688, from what i understand that's not the case.

they're placing a pretty big value on selling vinyl, they're charging premium prices and making the products limited editions.
2970687, Apparently Conway got Bell's Palsy as a result of being shot
Posted by j clyde morris, Tue Aug-09-16 11:37 AM

2956169, Wow - are heads really sleeping on this??
Posted by Mongo Slade, Wed Feb-03-16 05:24 PM

..cause I don like shyt...and these dudes been on rotation for weeks now...

yeah that's just me....but makes me wonder if real dope shyt really gets any shine in today's "hip-hop" landscape.....

I was arguing that with a cat recently.....cause he was saying ain no dope hip-hop anymore...my argument was that they're probably is you just haven't discovered it...and even when you do...it's not gonna get any shine/support these days...

but I'm an old head too so...maybe these young cats ain on this type shyt.....

eh -

Apart from the voice pitch, you don't think their flow sounds similar.

As soon as I heard West Side Gunn it reminded me of Roc. I'm not saying they are identical, just similar.

Gunn some time. Roc Marciano didn't fully come into his own until Reloaded.
I didn't have a problem with Action Bronson initially, because I figured his sound would grow a bit, but it just hasn't.
I don't listen to Your Old Droog, but I don't hate him. I do expect him to start to develop his own thing though.

to get accustomed to Westside's high pitched voice, but I'm all in. There's a new project with him and a Brit producer named The Purist. It's titled Roses Are Red... So Is Blood. I believe the Alchemist is a fan, so it'll be interesting to see if the two work together. Hopefully Conway will be included as well as I think he's better than Westside.

I'm not saying there are are the same in terms of influence or skill level or whatever, so I don't want to see anyone get bent out of shape, but I'd love to hear Conway and Kool G Rap on a track together. Would be quite the interesting collaboration.

EP goes by the name of Don't Get Scared Now.

Majority of the tracks produced by their in house producer Daringer; all except on one done by The Alchemist where he once again displays pure beat wizardry, if that's a word. For those that are Prodigy fans, he's one one of the tracks as well.

Most importantly, here's the link: https://soundcloud.com/user-5212897/sets/dont-get-scared-now

2965744, this pretty good. sounds like a modern take on rae + ghost
Posted by bearfield, Sun May-15-16 11:04 PM
the slow tempo, psychedelic arrangement, and wide swaths of open space in the verses all remind me of current atlanta music

but then you have these 90s-style jazz and soul samples, westside and conway's voices and deliveries complementing each other, and vivid descriptions of drug crimes, which recalls classic 90s east coast rap albums and the standard of rapping those albums helped establish

it's fantastic combination. i hope these guys can find success with this sound because it's very intriguing

just ...raw. jesus

i get strong beanie sigel and jadakiss vibes from him: no nonsense ultra-violent lyrics, variations on the same double rhyme for long stretches ("bape on you / wait on you / cake on you"), and a ton of compound rhymes. he's pretty good

i hope the griselda crew can find that sweet spot of referencing older hip hop styles and sounds without sounding old. songs like "BIRDY" and "mr. t" not having traditional drums is a good start, as are the slower songs like "ajax" that evoke modern atlanta sounds

I hadn't heard him on anything but the grimiest of grimy shit and I gotta say that I was impressed that he's able to flip different styles. that kid is an MCs MC. a lot of dudes may claim the street (and may actually truly be), but this kid is a student of the art of rapping. he might be in the wrong era to achieve the level of attention and accolades he deserves, but gotdammit...that boy raps his ass off. he's got my full attention everytime he pops up on a track.

in that one guy basically gets by on his delivery but still occasionally has great lines and the other guy contrasts that with skillfully crafted bars and carefully considered lyrics. i love it when they trade bars on songs like "free chapo" and "brains on the basquiat"

2985206, signed to shady records

http://shadyrecords.com/2017/03/03/shady-x-griselda-ink-deal-for-westside-gunn-and-conway/

Shady Records announces today that it has signed an exclusive deal with Buffalo, NY-based hip-hop label Griselda Records for artists Westside Gunn and Conway. In doing so, the rappers — who are also brothers — become the first out of Buffalo to sign a deal with major label distribution. Griselda was founded by Westside Gunn in 2014.

The pair got their start in the early 2000’s, with Conway steadily earning a reputation as one of the most skilled rappers in the region, while Gunn worked as his manager, eventually developing his own career as an artist and launching Griselda. Since breaking onto the scene with the label’s independently-released mixtapes and a series of SoundCloud-released music, Gunn and Conway have caught the attention of the media and fans alike, garnering respect from everyone from DJ Premier and Pete Rock, to Anderson.Paak, to Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali. A growing cult following has resulted in Griselda’s vinyl releases and label merchandise selling out in mere minutes, while murals of the two rappers and their album covers have popped up on walls in cities across the United States and in places as far-flung as Australia, France, Romania, and the U.K.

Commented Eminem: “The style and energy of Griselda Records, Gunn and Conway are infectious. We can’t wait to put them on the platform they have earned and deserve.”
“We’re bringing a new sound to the game, but it’s also reminiscent of the grimey 90’s,” said Griselda founder and recording artist Westside Gunn. “Art is in everything we do…it’s the essence. We’re fusing boom-bap/dark sounds with the hipster cool kid lifestyle. A new lane is being carved.”

Aside from their solo projects, Gunn and Conway also record together as Hall n’ Nash (paying homage to their favorite WWE tag team The Outsiders). They recently completed a soon-to-be-released project with The Alchemist, and the duo will also be releasing an album under the Shady deal. Westside Gunn’s last project was the Hitler Wears Hermes 4 mixtape, which was released in October. The 11-track project includes features from Stalley, Conway, Smoke DZA and more. Conway has been steadily releasing tracks for his Devil’s Reject mixtape series and has been heard on Shade 45’s Tony Touch and Statik Selektah shows.

I'm just selfishly happy since this means it should be easier to purchase physical copies of their works. I felt like I won the lotto when I was able to cop a CD of Flygod last year.

I'm hoping this was the reason why that Conway GOAT album was delayed.

I'm also hoping Eminem won't meddle too much in terms of how they make their records.

2985234, I'd listen to two projects first
Posted by Mash_Comp, Sat Mar-04-17 11:55 AM
First, Conway's 50 Round Drum mixtape. It's long but worth it and covers the best of Jimmy Conway aka Conway The Machine while mixing it up with freestyles over industry beats and him just doing his thing.

The next is Westside Gunn Extendos mixtape. Same concept as Conway's joint above. Long, but covers a good gap of what Gunn is about.

That should be your starting points then you can jump around a bit. Conway's got mixtapes dating back to 2008 that I've been able to find online but you're not missing much (although he's been good a really long time).

It'll be interesting to see if Benny gets a decent amount of shine with their new Shady deal since Griselda has been top heavy in terms of focusing on Westside and Conway. Sounds like Benny can definitely hold his own.

is to follow their twitter or instagram accounts since they announce when their products are available. If you are looking for physical material, visit whoisconway.com for works from Conway The Machine and bennythebutcherstore.com for works from Benny. Westside Gunn mostly sells clothes from his website, so I won't waste you time there.

All three also partner with Daupe, a very indie British imprint that partners will artists to re-release vinyl and tape versions of their works. They typically only have 200-300 copies of the albums when ever they are sold and literally sell out in a minute or so, so good luck on that front. If you are curious, visit daupe.bandcamp.com.

I bought a CD copy of Flygod via direct communication with Westside Gunn on his instagram account and CDs of G.O.A.T and Reject 2 from Conway's website.

Good luck snagging material from thembecause like you, I am annoyed it is hard to purchase physical copies of music from these guys, especially since I prefer buying vinyl these days. Hopefully the Shady deal will eventually make it easier to buy physical copies of their material.

3003852, This isn't exactly all that new, but this track deserves some attention.
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-09-18 07:31 PM
This track being Easter Gunday 3. The first element that deserves attention is how simple yet utter ill this beat is. It's almost a shame is this for a free track, but Daringer did his thing with this. Secondly is how Benny melds perfectly to this. He attacks this better than Westside Gunn does, which I suppose isn't a complete surprise to most that follow Griselda. Last but not least is Westside Gunn. He takes a good amount of time dumping on Tha God Fahim, Mach Hommy, and I believe Camouflage Monk, which surprises me since I believe Camouflage Monk is a producer and doesn't even rap if I'm not mistaken. Like Westside Gunn himself said during the song, Mach Hommy was on Easter Gunday 2 last year. I suppose the Griselda circle is becoming that much smaller. Have either Mach Hommy, Fahim, or Camouflage Monk responded to this yet? Pretty interesting rap beef since I'd imagine Buffalo isn't all that big.

3005662, Westside Gunn - Chris Benoit album tracklist, out June 22

I can't believe it, but my first reaction to the production credits was, "Damn, not completely produced by Daringer"? lol. But nah, this shit might be bananas. I hope the guests don't crowd the album tho.

that list is looking pretty crazy

i trust all these producers to bring the heat and it's probably better to have a bunch of well placed guests than a whole album worth of westside gunn (as much as i love the guy)
3005669, That tracklist is ridiculous

3005697, I'm justing noticing Lotto isn't on there.
Posted by Numba_33, Tue May-29-18 12:38 PM
That's interesting. For those that aren't aware, Lotto is a new song Westside dropped about a week or two ago that's produced by Green Lantern and features Benny the Butcher. The way Westside was hyping thre track up on social media, I thought for certain he's include it on here since the video for it features Chris Benoit.

Here's to hoping 1) this is top notch material and 2) I can actually purchase a physical copy of this when it drops.
3011279, this one is growing on me

still arranged goofily, but once it settles into its own thing it's pretty dope. HWH6 made me revisit, as i reallllly dig that one
3011289, I think this is his best project even with the long number of tracks.

3005687, Can we get a new thread ever?
Posted by stone_phalanges, Tue May-29-18 07:28 AM
Like when the album drops can we discuss it in another thread?

additionally, is anyone here from Buffalo?
3005695, In retrospect, I'll say that I genuinely miss Superb
Posted by adg87, Tue May-29-18 11:48 AM
These cats give me alot of what I loved about Perb. He was the perfect complement to Ghost outside of Rae, and the joints I heard him spit on outside of the Wu albums was promising. I really like these dudes though. Ain't nuthin like that genuine east coast boom bap fire.
3005700, Superb's idiosyncrasies almost made him a star

It's hard to really pinpoint what made Perb dope, but more often than not I found his raps really refreshing. He didn't try to write in some super complex style, he just thought different.
3005728, zackly! He was as far from a rapper as you could envision,
Posted by adg87, Wed May-30-18 12:09 PM
but that's what made him so dope. Like that cat off the corner who just has natuarl ability to put pictures into words. His "We Made It" verse is still magic to me.

3015308, So
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-15-19 10:08 AM
according to info I saw on their respective social media accounts, it appears a Shady/Griselda project will finally drop. It'll feature Westside Gunn, Conway the Macine, and Benny the Butcher altogether. I believe Daringer and another producer I've never heard of will handle production, so I'm assuming that means Eminem wouldn't meddle too much with this. I wonder which additional artists will make appearances on this.

Interesting it took two years since news of them signing with Shady for even news of a project to finally emerge. I'm hoping I will have a fairly easy time purchasing this project, assuming of course this album isn't pure rubbish.

I'm hoping the two songs they previewed with Just Blaze on the boards will drop with this
3015355, westside gunn bores me now, esp with the excessive WWE references
Posted by guru0509, Tue Apr-16-19 05:37 PM
and are we ever going to get Conway's actual debut album? not just a bunch of soundcloud mixtapes

cant wait for that "plugs i met" album by Benny though
3015368, yeah, I don't dislike him, but...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-17-19 11:33 AM
it's really hard to listen to him after Machine or Benny have flowed...they're both SO much better than him. You right, too, I mean he doesn't really rap or tell stories it's just..."I had the ill Louboutin galoshes, lookin like Iron Sheik at the Plaza...AYO!!"

That is... very accurate.

That said, Supreme Blientele is an excellent album. But indeed at this point Benny and Conway have very much lapped him and then some.
3015371, without a doubt, SB is an amazing album...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Apr-17-19 12:11 PM
even still, my favorite song on the album, GODS Don't Bleed, I skip right after Kiss' verse.
3015385, Yeah, I've pretty much soured on the crew
Posted by Numba_33, Thu Apr-18-19 08:02 AM
in the last 6-8 months or so; that's including Supreme Blientele and Tana Talk 3. I think I said it around the time it was released, but if Benny the Butcher got the beats for Supreme Blientele instead of Westside Gunn, that would have be a 5 mic album. The beats for the majority of Benny's solo releases, including Tana Talk 3 are way too pedestrian and boring for me to pay attention to his raps. I'm sure that's outside of popular opinion since I've seen that album get huge praise. And Conway's drips and drabs have been very very very very underwhelming, especially given how stellar he is on the microphone. I'm hoping this Shady release will get these dudes to sharpen their skills since all three will have to share the microphone at time across one album. That and the fact I'm assuming this album will get much wider exposure compared to the stuff they've released so far.
3015404, Machine was supposed to drop the first offering on Shady
Posted by High Society, Thu Apr-18-19 10:32 PM
A solo. Which was confusing because I thought for sure
it would be a a Hall & Nash joint.
Now adding Benny so it’s NWO (3 guys)
Hopefully WSG is picking the beats.
Been beggin for him to exec produce a Conway album.
They need someone to actually step in and produce them though...
Tell them hey guys, we need songs. Let’s come up with some concepts, some better song names.
Because before you know it, they gonna be naming songs
shit like - The Rap Sasha Banks -
because they’ll already have used all the dope wrestling dudes.
