I didn't know about "Venice" until looking at info on "Malibu" and recently picking up the EP him and Knx dropped.

I'm sure there were posts around the time it dropped, but I was lame and unaware at the time.

Really love the opening 5 tracks.
The Season|Carry Me especially.
I've been wearing Room In Here out for a few weeks.
Not perfect (I think he's a bit too vulgar at times), but a great album.
2954463, this is fantastic...the transition from track 5 to 6? the rapsody track?

Yes! I did such a good job of not anticipating it too much. I ignored snippets and singles cuz I wanted to press play on the album with nothing but his guest spots as a reference.

Great success. And a somewhat obviously jamming piece of work. I'll be street-teaming this one and that Vega Intl. Night School from Neon Indian for the next few weeks fo sho.

2954613, this is why I pay for Apple / Beats whatever radio

subscription.

Can hear new popular songs on Ebro, Lowe's shows.
Love the residencies by TIP, Dre, Drake, A-Trak, etc.
Get recommended stuff by what I listen to.

But most importantly,
Can stream albums in car.
Listen to full songs and albums on computer at home.

And then when I like something strongly enough, I'll go cop vinyl.

This album is a definite purchase for me.
He's a studio rat - he's everywhere, there's always new music.
the NxWorries EP with Knx was great.

The preemo and Dre joint on Compton was supposed to be on Malibu
from what I've read.

The production on Malibu is top notch - some filthy producers:
Khalil
Hi-Tek
9th
Madlib

One of the next gen cats that I really like.

About to sidebar - could be it's on post but I'm here now...
Grew up an Eastcoast head.
Golden era blessed me with some of my favorite music of all time.
Wasn't ever TOO HEAVY into west coast music.
Liked Snoop, Quik, Dre's albums.
Loved Ice Cube's first 3 LPs and Kill at Will EP.
Souls of Mischief.
Pharcyde's Labcabin tho initially checked bc of production.

But after that eh - wasn't really ever checking for west coast hiphop like that.

Until I fell in love with the beat music scene
and instrumental albums, beat tapes, etc.
A lot of that stuff comes from LA.

So while NY been slacking for quite some time
I started to fall in love with some west coast rappers like:

Blu
Kendrick and crew
Quasimoto
Vince Staples
Though from Chicago, was living in LA, making music in LA
when got hip to him - Jeremiah Jae. Please listen to Bad Jokes EP.

Anderson .Paak
Jonwayne
Nocando, founder of Hellfyre Club.
Earl is cool at times.
I'm a fan of Tyler's musical talents - maybe not so much his content.
Dunno if Open Mike Eagle is from LA but was hipped to him.
Shabazz Palaces, same thing - not sure if from LA but runs in circle.

Shute - even before all of them - Game whose made great work
since debut.

West coast is in my opinion right now on top of hiphop once again.

Every region has it's reign and it's turn.
2954662, Ah...missed this mention.

2954837, I agree with whoever said the album feels a little long...
Posted by Brew, Tue Jan-19-16 10:25 PM
But I've struggled to find songs I dislike enough to cut. "Parking Lot" is the only song I'm kinda whatever about. So I guess that and the "Water Fall" interluuuube could go. Otherwise I'm good with all of it.

Fantastic album.
2954838, For me it's the Interlude and "Silicon Valley"
Posted by Oak27, Tue Jan-19-16 10:30 PM
2954844, Silicone Valley ranks on the lower end for me as well...
Posted by Brew, Tue Jan-19-16 11:41 PM
but I really like it so I can't get rid of it.
2954842, t'was I
Posted by astralblak, Tue Jan-19-16 11:11 PM
I'd cut:

"Put Me Thru"
"Parking Lot"
"Your Prime"

I wouldnt cut this:
"Lite Weight" (featuring The Free Nationals United Fellowship Choir)
just made it a little shorter on my itunes. the groove and sound is dope as fuck, but it runs a bit long as song...

I'd also move "Silicon Valley" to no. 5
2954845, Thanks - didn't feel like sifting thru the whole post again ha

2955028, Wasn't expecting this to be as strong and polished as it is
Posted by ramaj1, Fri Jan-22-16 02:09 AM
Heart Don't Stand a Chance, The Season/Carry Me (deep lyrics), Am I Wrong (so breezy), Parking Lot, Room in Here and maybe the closer w/ Talib, The Dreamer, are my personal standouts.

Ol' boy has come up. This is miles ahead of Venice which was solid (albeit forgettable IMO) in it's own right. AP is creating a lane of his own.
2955519, The self-produced songs are my favorites.
Posted by squeeg, Wed Jan-27-16 03:01 AM

I need Paak rockin' for about 20 minutes over that beat

I think Dre can do that sound in his sleep

my hope is that this is redemption for whatever happened with Bilal

because that sound is still needed, IMO.

I also think, that Paak left to his own device

probably won't win over general audiences

Dre beats and co-sign will move him in that direction.
2955860, those label mergers happened to Bilal
Posted by astralblak, Sun Jan-31-16 08:38 PM
he still releases quality music, y'all just don't care

but yeah "Seasons/Carry Me" is such a great song. i love the verse when the beat switches

but I gotta disagree that Dre can do that sound in his sleep.

2956431, whick tracks did he play? all off malibu or even some nxworries,
Posted by Hellyeah, Sun Feb-07-16 06:45 AM
compton stuff?
2956443, RE: whick tracks did he play? all off malibu or even some nxworries,

i know he opened with a track from Compton because he shouted out dj premier (in the audience) before going into it, then he did The Waters..so it was kinda 2 primo songs back-to-back? (that track for me is madlib doing a spot-on imitation of "devil's pie"--same vibe i mean. and paak doing his best d impersonation) from there he kinda switched up, going back and forth between malibu and venice (which i've listened to maybe once so i dont know those as well)..i know he did the house track "i think i loove you, fuck that, i know i do"<--love that song

from malibu he did bird, waters, carry me (imo, not the same doing it without the first part), am i wrong, lightweight, room in here, come down, silicon valley (cut off again like the colbert performance.. how you gonna pass up on singing "i wanna see whats underneath that tender titty meat" to a room full of women all crushing on you??) and the dreamer (thought kweli might come out but nope)

crowd was interesting..some of these millenials are out of control. saw one college kid almost start a fight with a guy 3x his size because he unintentionally stepped on his heel. big guy and i looked at each other and laughed.
2956450, thanks, so no nxworries stuff it seems...too bad

I love this album

but I can respect the critique that his voice might not be for everybody

the music is still quality though.
2956396, 'Put Me Thru' been on repeat for a minute.

I'm not completely in love with all the lyrics and the rap-singing ("Silicon Valley" in particular), but this album is absolutely great.

He's bringing that good Bobby Womack realness to the modern age and for that he's got my ear and respect.

Great album.

wow....all the co-signs got me curious. From what I have heard, it is dope. Hopefully with Dre behind him he will pick up even more steam.
2956631, love it so good

I liked Venice, but this shit is way better...
2956668, Better than Venice IMO but Venice actually had more potential "hits"
Posted by theeraser, Thu Feb-11-16 11:57 AM
Obviously he's already blown up to a certain extent, but I can think of 4-5 tracks off Venice that could've been big commercially and not a one off this...Thoughts? The music is what matters but I just want this album to do well enough that Dre doesn't ruin him.
2956700, Wouldnt matter 'cause Malibu, like Venice, doesnt have a machine behind it
Posted by Nabs, Thu Feb-11-16 08:25 PM
Venice had songs like "Might Be" that could have hit if he had Dre/Aftermath behind it. Well, shit, it is a hit, just not with his voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2pFf2gqoJs

I think making a more consistent album will help him have a larger impact.
2957598, please go see him live. i had one of my best concert experiences in

my life...dude is funny as fuck and puts on a hell of a show..he basically performed the whole malibu album and even did a sick cover of curtis mayfield's "makings of you"...amazing drummer as well..
