Billie Jean, a fantastic record, written by MJ, was a smash BEFORE motown 25.
The novelty hit, "thriller," needed the video. But MJ ain't write that song.
Don't stop till you get enough? Same thing. It was a hit song he wrote that did not need the video to be a smash.
And why compare MJ and prince anyway, from a mmusical perspective.
They have very little in common.
