2941482, PE or Wu-Tang, but I'm sorta through with all conventional biopics

There's a general weakness in the genre that made me kinda bored with films about the rise/fall of musicians.
2941483, Jay-Z's COULD be the best, but it won't at all

He's too much of an icon for it to truly show what he did, similar to Dre

2942277, Damn! That's all the way true too.

2941816, A doc only works if they have good archive footage.

A biopic with ?uest as the POV character would be fantastic.

And, I'd even accept it not leaning too heavy on the hip-hop side. Probably just play out that one article about the case that someone posted here earlier this year. Mentioning the female police officer they killed, etc.

I think an LL Cool J biopic would have potential to be very entertaining as well. He had his ups and downs, but he was relevant throughout so many different eras of hip hop.

that's a real story.

Jay through Reasonable Doubt and BIG friendship. Supposedly toward end of BIG's life - they were talking on phone almost daily like BFFs.

Outkast through ATLiens release. Gotta see the beginnings of the Dre3K change.

i mean dr dre in his prime, suge knight running things
snoop, 2pac and the whole cast.

i mean that documentary alone still has me sparked.

the only other obvious choice for me is 2pac film which to me would be huge if done right
2941539, Beastie Boys would be more interesting than those choices IMO

2941556, A Wu-Tang biopic, while sounding cool, would be a logistical nightmare
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Aug-18-15 11:41 AM
Especially from a storytelling perspective.

Look at "Straight Outta Compton." It mostly focused on three members of ostensibly a five to six person group. It ran two and a half hours, covered about a decade, and there were still complaints all the shit they left out.

Now, imagine doing a Wu-Tang movie: how do you divide up a screen-time/story-telling space for a group of 9 dudes (10 if you count Cappadonna)? They would probably have to make choices and decide to focus on, say, four of the clan members. Which four get the most screen time? Certainly RZA, because he's the acknowledged architect. Certainly ODB, because he's the group's tragic figure. Then who? GZA, because he was basically the first of the crew into the biz? Method Man, because he was the crew's first commercial star? Rae, because he had the group's most critically acclaimed solo album? Ghost, because his, um, "activities" help in their early years and who held them down throughout the '00s?

If you wanted to do a comprehensive Wu history, there's too many stories to tell and a limited amount of time to tell them. If someone wanted to go that route, narrowing the focus to specific era or event would be a good way to go. And, yes, a movie about ODB's relationship with his manager after he got out of prison would suck.
2941571, it would probably just have to anchor on RZA
Posted by Nodima, Tue Aug-18-15 12:21 PM
and the others would fade in and out as he worked with them or thought about them. I don't think you could even have another "main character", sadly.

the other idea would be to turn the movie into a sort of bottle episode and just keep the camera in the studio the entire movie, but at that point you're talking about an unmarketable movie major studio wise.

2941601, Make that mess a trilogy
Posted by Ishwip, Tue Aug-18-15 07:09 PM
Or a two-parter, 2 and a half to 3 hours each!

Yeah idk, I'm talkin' reckless and purely from my own fanboy enjoyment, but if there was a way to maybe do it in two parts, where the first one ends on a satisfying note where the viewer feels they were told a (mostly) complete story while still leaving the door open for a sequel?

First movie would cover beginnings, 36 Chambers, and the first initial wave of solos.

Sequel would cover the time of Wu-Tang Forever, 2nd/3rd solos, ODB passing.........not sure where it should end, though. Stopping with Dirty passing would be depressing. And while we do have some quality solos/projects from some of the members in the past decade, none of the Wu-Tang group albums have been undeniably great so that they could go with the "triumph in face of opposition" angle following ODB passing and the less than enthusiastically received 2nd and 3rd solo projects.

I want a Wu movie with all 9 members represented along with the most prevalent affiliates (Cappa, Priest, etc.)! Someone else figure out the logistics! :)

2941606, Yeah A Wu-Movie Would Be Dope But Yeah You Right
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Aug-18-15 08:00 PM
It would be a nightmare to film and get the stories correct and in chronological order of how they formed Wu-Tang and the Wu-Empire; we would just need a Wu-Tang the early years movie that probably be around two to three hours easily; just to explain everything right up to the first month release of "Return To The 36 Chambers".

Then make two more movies starting afterwards, and the third about everybody else the Wu-Affiliates, and RZA going into film.

2941608, I think that it could be two movies
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Aug-18-15 08:16 PM
It could focus around RZA

Start from the beginning of them forming the group.

36 Chambers

The run of first solos

And then end when they dismantled on the tour with Rage.

I think that would leave it open for a sequel which would cover them going through the struggles, ODB passing, Ghost bringing them back and then end with them all arguing again...lol
2941629, sounds like a dope HBO series to me

I don't wanna see any of these shits lol

Documentaries would be fine for the vast majority of them

aside from Wu Tang, that is
Due to all the personalities involved, perhaps.
They'd have to do one fuck of a job to screw that movie up.
Hell, ODB's life could be a movie in itself, and you got 8 or 9 other people with careers
there to focus on? Movie waiting to happen.
