2939497, Lil Dicky's debut album came out today (Snoop, Hannibal Buress on it)

Mixed feelings about him...The world doesn't need another 'frat rap' white guy

BUT

I think its at the very least kind of interesting/entertaining that he owns being a "Comedy Rapper" yet wants to be respected as an actual rapper...and IMO at least, raps technically better than Mac Miller, G-Eazy, Asher Roth, etc.

And I can't lie, I love "Lemme Freak", mustve listened to it/watched it at least 10 times

Thoughts?

He really is focused on the craft more than anything else... I had some sessions with him and that was certainly the focus
2939803, Do you think he's nicer than Asher, though?
Posted by Ron, Mon Aug-03-15 11:42 AM
Asher did not deserve to be lumped in with the other rappers the OP named IMO.
2939817, fwiw, I wasn't putting Asher down at all by putting him in that group
Posted by amplifya7, Mon Aug-03-15 12:31 PM
I was naming recent white rappers whose fanbase is probably primarily white frat guys, but have some stuff I think is actually good

This G-Eazy song "Been On" is tight to me:

2939818, Gotcha. Didn't want to admit that I liked the other two

as well, but I couldn't let the Asher slander slide, lol.

Ash is nice... no question....

I am not about to pit 2 ppl I know fairly well against each other though...

but they both take the craft seriously and I respect that..
2939612, I'd rather hear another fake jiggy, wanna be thug rapper than this bullshit

I'd rather like to shoot the fair one with this culture vulture...
2939799, that's where I'm at, even though rap is just a hustle for many, I hate when

people are so open about it, like "im just doing this to try and get rich" it's not funny to me, Im not a fan of this dude at all

@rob_starrk
2939814, He actually says the exact opposite of that in my first link if you watched

Around 3:15

"Well, I don’t care about the money
Like, it’s the respect that I’m wanting
Honestly, I just want to be one of the greats"
2939786, woah at that sway verse!

I think it's Funny AF but PTP ain't feeling the concept of a Lil' Dicky show. Figured there might be some fans of the dude in this post who might check it.

3022923, There's something about parody rap that just doesn't sit right with me.
Posted by phemom, Sat Mar-21-20 04:46 AM
I think when it's ALL making fun of rap culture it's just not fun to me. When there's some actual songwriting in other songs it's a little eaiser for me to rock with.

There's rappers that do parody type stuff, like Homeboy Sandman for example....but he always does it in a way that says "this thing I'm making fun of.....but BUT I GOT SOMETHING BETTER THAN THAT THO" and with Dicky in the few songs I've heard I haven't heard the other side.

I haven't listened to Dicky's album yet, but I have a friend who's a diehard....so I will eventually. Hopefully there's other ideas on the album besides The Earth Song and the I switched bodies with Chris Brown joints.

Also, Asher Roth has an album dropping in a week (at least he did before the country went to shit) and I'm looking forward to it. I haven't heard anything from Dicky that fucking with what I heard on Pabst & Jazz....that's just me tho.
3022926, I don't know Dicky well but the stuff I hear from him doesn't seem like Parody
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sat Mar-21-20 01:36 PM
It seems more like raps that are funny.

But I don't know his catalog like that.
