2937965, any instagram vinyl collectors here?/diggin'?
Posted by Bblock, Fri Jul-17-15 11:16 AM
mine's bldngblck
check me out
i post to enlighten, not to brag
drums, samples, weird shit, whatever
i see ascension and monotone on there
i really just want to talk old records, these current hip hop
artists ain't doin' it for me no more

diggin

i didn't know ramp only came out as promo and wasn't officially released until the 90s
i just scored my first copy and an og at that!
any good finds and digs on your end?
i dig alot. a little bit less now that my work schedule has changed. i used to could spend the days diggin', son in tow, and hit work in the evenings. now, i got maybe two days out the week to hit spots, so most of my diggin' is online. ebay, discogs.
i got into discogs heavily about october of last year, and haven't been able to stop. it's some good deals to be found. i check them daily, even if just getting information or fact checking.
i just got into ebay a few months ago. it's pretty cool as far as the prices. a little cheaper than discogs if you bid right and catch the right seller at the right time.

i dig alot here in southern california. i think it's a buyer's market. it's so many record stores and sources of vinyl, you can easily say yay or nay to something and find it cheaper elsewhere if the seller wants too much.
whats the finds like in your town?

Here's a link to make it easier https://instagram.com/bldngblck/

I'm pretty amateur still when it comes to knowledge. I kind of stopped digging for a while because I was finding myself always walking in the store, dropping $100 on records and then only listening to them once and never again. I also feel like a lot of my local spots are just charging too much now for it to be fun. Like the cheapest thing is $7 and it's some bullshit. I've been getting the bug again recently though.
2937982, Thanks for the link
Posted by Bblock, Fri Jul-17-15 12:43 PM
Yeah I feel you. When I first moved to la, i was diggin heavy in the chi. When I got here I just lost the bug. I hadn't dug in like 16 years. Just last year I caught the bug again, and my la collection rivals the collection I left back in the chi! I'm a dollar bin fiend myself, but i will pay for something if I really want it, and it's dope

I don't post a ton, but 95% of my photos are record/music-related.

I finally got RAMP as well, about a month ago at Cosmos Records in Toronto. They're a great follow on Instragram, by the way, and their stores up there are INSANE. Very well-curated and the guys know a ton of shit. Aki basically had the entire 95 Wall of Fame sitting in a couple crates behind the counter. I had to get that RAMP - $70, still in shrink. Incredible album, far from a one-tracker, IMO. The foreign and private records on the wall were fucking out of control. Heavy, heavy stuff.

Nashville digging sucks now. I still hit spots almost daily, but that's just because I'm on summer break. Every Thursday the main shop puts out about 500 $1 45s - I can usually find a little gold there if I'm waiting by the door when they open.
2938017, Yeah I follow cosmosrcords. Sick indeed
Posted by Bblock, Fri Jul-17-15 04:53 PM
I'm a have to see if they got an online store. That's a good price for that ramp!

https://instagram.com/onemillionthree. i don't post much at all but I'm always getting info on there

i follow you, ascension and bowls ha

got back in record buying 2 years ago when I shipped all my records from LA to Philly

i'm looking for that RAMP too. I had a reissue years ago that I sold

I feel you on cali diggin. I follow alot of LA heads on IG and it seems there's a ton of shit out there

I'm in south jersey
I mainly hit up philly and nyc for diggin. NYC is expensive but they have good selections, philly got some dope spots. NJ has a few but there's a bunch of places out here I've yet to visit, especially north jersey. One of my favs is Jupiter Records in Delaware. I just picked up about 300 45's for free last week and I'm about to head there now

Instagram has definitely put me up on a bunch of stuff. Recently many times I would remember a record someone posted that I would not have known about with out it.
2937999, Damn!!

You're right about Philly. I was up there last summer DJing at Little Big Things and we definitely came up on a few records. In the one hour we spent at Beautiful World, the guy bought someone's collection out of their trunk and let us have first stab at it. Nothing crazy, but nice, cheap copies of the Fatback Band's whole run on Perception, Dizzy Gillespie - The Real Thing, Ramon Morris, etc. Philly seems to be a great place to grab the classics that just don't turn up in the south as much. A couple of the homies there have the suuuuuuuuper deep crates….inspiring collections.

Nice haven't check out Beautiful World yet but its on the list
2937998, I never know what to look for, so I end up doing the "Rhythm Roulette"
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Jul-17-15 02:24 PM
This store, 2nd & Charles, has a used vinyl section. For a while, they had the 45's for $.50/each. The few clearance 12"'s I got were mostly scratched to all hell.
2938007, We have one of those too
Posted by sectachrome86, Fri Jul-17-15 03:36 PM
Surprisingly, I've found a lot of records there that I've been looking for for a long time. One time I had been trying to find an OG copy of Supafly forever, and they had like 3 copies.

Lots of guitar nerdery and cat pics on my account.

RE: RAMP
It literally took a decade for that album to click for me. I initially thought, "Oh this has 'Daylight' and a bunch of junk" but I kept the record, maybe because of the prestige of such a thing, I don't know. Then I was having terrible insomnia about a year and half ago and I kept putting that album on at like 1 or 2 am and it just sounded perfect. Now I consider it one of the best r+b records ever.

2938010, Does anyone ever find anything at thrift stores?
Posted by sectachrome86, Fri Jul-17-15 03:42 PM
I look hopefully every time thinking I might find some gems but I swear to god its this every time:

Christmas Albums
Herb Alpert
The Kingston Trio
*repeat*

One time I bought a Kingston Trio album thinking it could be like an old white reggae band or something. SMH.

I thought it might just be the overwhelming number of country white people in my particular area though.

Here's my IG if you want, I haven't been posting much record stuff lately though https://instagram.com/rschleg/

Lol. The truth. Always these and Ramsey Lewis albums
2938043, RE: You're not gonna find RAMP at the thrift store.
Posted by Austin, Fri Jul-17-15 08:34 PM
But you may find good common stuff for cheap. I picked up the good part of Carole King's catalogue in thrift stores. If you're looking for beats, yeah look elsewhere. But if you just want to fill up on some essentials for cheap, it's a good way to go.

And the Kingston Trio has some good stuff.

2938264, how do you enter stuff with no bar code? manually??
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Jul-20-15 03:24 PM
..ive been wanting a database of my records for a long time, but seems like it would take too long

2938396, RE: No you just attach to the listing on Discogs.
Posted by Austin, Tue Jul-21-15 05:37 PM
You find the one you have then click "Add to Collection" and you're done. Now, if you have something that's not on there, THEN you would have to add it manually.

As a father of two with little spare time, the sheer convenience of sites like discogs and ebay has led to less digging which is sad becauseit used to be one of my biggest hobbies but I just don't have the energy anymore; earlier, I could wade through dozens of crates on fleamarkets and shit but now, I just lose the energy completely after wading through a dozen of records by swedish 70's entertainment orchestras and Baccara/Boney M; it's a shame...
2938441, Thanks for the info, now following.
Posted by High Society, Wed Jul-22-15 04:52 AM
I've got a few pics up on my page of stuff I've bought in the last year. None of my good finds or anything. Been meaning to start
focusing my instagram page as a way to talk vinyl and music w/ cats
besides here.

Thanks for the mini inspiration - see ya over on "the gram"
2938448, I Stopped Diggin' Heavily About Five Years Ago
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Jul-22-15 06:31 AM
Yeah I still dig but only on rare occasions and when I have a few dollars to spend, but I've always been the cheap digger, if it's under $5 then I'll cop but lately I've just kind of stopped buying rock & jazz albums and now dig for dance and 80's to 90's 12inches, and disco albums now.

I wanted to sign up to instagram but never got into it though, I still hate using twitter, I'll just stick to tumblr which I can post the audio instead of just pics.

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Jul-24-15 03:15 PM
Most the people who are on tumblr usually re-post thier graminsta vids on their one kat plays rare used sampled material but hides the names, don't get it though cause if you show a picture of the album cover I'm gonna find out who the artist is eventually (if I don't know or own it already).

I might join (my phone is 2nd hand old, my camera is bad with pics indoors, but I got a tablet never tried to take pics maybe that what I will use), I got soooo much vinyl that I've bought but haven't listened to yet.
