2936812, Tame Impala - Currents Posted by Madvillain 626, Sun Jul-05-15 04:33 PM
It's out there. Great way to end the fourth of july weekend.
This is fucking amazing so far. Lot more keyboards.

2936815, All singles I've heard have been horrendous... Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sun Jul-05-15 05:04 PM
They REALLY sold out to "crap-indie" with wet, sloggy, 80's tendencies; just as bad as the National or any of those other fucktard bands.
Is the whole album like those tunes or is there still some psych? If not, they can fuck off...
|
2936833, They sound absolutely NOTHING like The National. Posted by shockzilla, Mon Jul-06-15 05:07 AM
but, yeah, there's nothing here for you on this record.
it's a brilliant summer album but it's all very synth-led.
|
2936836, I actually know that... Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Mon Jul-06-15 05:33 AM
It was a reference point for the magnitude of the "modern-rock" wackness, nothing else...

2936839, and then the national have their moments Posted by shockzilla, Mon Jul-06-15 08:41 AM
this is a beautiful song.

2936959, ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzz Posted by Hellyeah, Tue Jul-07-15 03:07 PM
i love, LOVE synths...but this is just too much man..expecially coming from a live album like Lonerism...this is a snoozer
|
2937223, good album, yet easily their worst Posted by Kosa12, Sat Jul-11-15 05:30 AM
to put it bluntly, they are better in my opinion as a guitar based psychedelic band than a synth based pop band....I love psychedelic rock though
anyway this does have jams and will get repeat spins from me so lets see if it grows
|
2937226, that's fair Posted by mashpg89, Sat Jul-11-15 07:06 AM
I agree and they do sound kind of out of their element on this. I hear the idea and potential for a lot of the songs but the synths, instrumentation, and mastering aren't executed correctly and it results in a bland and underwhelming album.
I'm all for artists trying new sounds, but it's crucial for them to realize when they didn't really work and why. I like Currents and it has some good moments, but it's a disappointment and hopefully Tame Impala will come with something stronger next time.
On a sidenote, Pond's "Man It Feels Like Space Again" sounds like more of a followup to Lonerism than Currents does to me. It's not as good, but check it out if you're not feeling Currents.

2937241, yeah i've heard that pond album Posted by Kosa12, Sat Jul-11-15 01:36 PM
it is definitely better than this one

2937249, I agree with you guys but i think he's due for some experimentation Posted by IceburgSmurf, Sat Jul-11-15 03:15 PM
in his career arc. Kevin parker writes all the music and if you've heard the vast amounts of pre lonerism tracks they have you can understand that at this point he might want to try something different. I like artists trying new stuff out and there are 2 or 3 tracks that match the previous stuff so im not mad at this effort.
On Pond i feel like the summer is just right for their stuff. I have midnight mass...., giant tortoise, siting up on our crane, outside is the right side, elegant design and fantastic explosion on my running/cycling playlist. Great stuff

2937252, He is due for some experimentation Posted by Kosa12, Sat Jul-11-15 03:22 PM
I agree, but at the same time I don't think "psych" is that constraining of a genre, but then again, I am not a musician. I'm not mad at it really, in fact it I suspected the new record would sound like this after hearing "Let It Happen", but quality wise this isn't seeing Lonerism or Innerspeaker in my opinion. It is still a good album though, very timely since we are in the middle of summer.

2937253, It's not just the guitars... Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jul-11-15 03:50 PM
It's in the drums as well; the loose, "dusty" grooves vs. something that just sounds like a metronome or a Hip-Hop beat or "dance" or whatever (NOTE:I still haven't heard the album, just basing it on the singles), like duh-duh-duh.
People say it's all about songwriting and pretend that drums/rhythm don't matter in rock/"rock". After all, it's not dance-music so why bother?
I beg to differ; rhythm is EXTREMELY important in rock/"rock", you may not pay attention to it due to being blinded by melodies or riffs or whatever but best believe you can feel it when it's missing. And I feel that shit on those songs... Just terrible to go rhytmically anonymous when you had such a good thing going...
Anyway, I really dug the drums on both the debut and the second one; this feels like selling out to "electronic music (TM)" stereotypes...
EDIT:Most attempts at making rock/"rock" sound dancey and "looped" and shit makes me throw up in my mouth and has done so since the Madchester era. Of course, you could argue they aren't rock or even "rock" anymore but then they can fuck off because pop/R&B/soul/ANYTHING else they sure aint...
|
2937257, Oh yeah... Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jul-11-15 04:26 PM
If some moron say something about them being more "modern" now due to being more in line with current trends and abandoning "retro-rock" and blah-blah; sorry but synth-pop with goofy keyboard lines is retro too and the disadvantage here is that I'm actually old enough to remember it which does it no good-I was a metalhead then for a reason...
Retro is retro, regardless of if it's wearing a kaftan and a moustache or a "futuristic" haircut metaphorically speaking (and on that note, A Flock of Seagulls were better than this, seriously, they were-their debut is brilliant compared with these new Tame Impala tunes)

2937233, Finally getting into them.. Posted by antoniovaladez, Sat Jul-11-15 11:17 AM
Nota fan of their previous work.. Too noisy, reverb on 10.. Now it feels more clean and on point.

2937368, if Eventually was an Alchemist beat or on new Slum album Posted by High Society, Sun Jul-12-15 02:56 PM

2937932, This dude is the truth Posted by mrshow, Fri Jul-17-15 03:44 AM
Not every band can survive a left turn sonically like this. I liked the singles but was a little hesitant about a Tame Impala album without guitars but I'm impressed. The melodies are still really strong.

2938118, It's solid. Not better than Lonerism IMO Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sat Jul-18-15 05:39 PM
Album starts off strong as hell and then starts declining after Eventually. Second half is hit or miss.

2938322, There are genuine BANGERS on this album.. Posted by jswerve386, Mon Jul-20-15 09:23 PM
Its like Kevin Parker just made an album based off that Dandelions song on the Mark Ronson joint. But I think the other 2 albums flow more cohesively and are just.. better, if that makes any sense. Solid Junior album from these cats tho and its only cemented me as a fan.
B+ from me.

2938360, Like it more than Lonerism; Innerspeaker still my favorite Posted by Ishwip, Tue Jul-21-15 11:50 AM
Diggin' the change in sound.

2938556, basically an album for people who liked the last daft punk album Posted by GumDrops, Thu Jul-23-15 07:23 AM
which includes me
so i fucking love it
so so good
they incorporate dancier ideas and hip hop production ideas really well IMO
though let it happen is crushingly bland and commercial
thankfully its early in the album and you can get it out the way quickly

2939060, Gotta say, this album is growing on me. Posted by BNueve, Mon Jul-27-15 08:57 PM
Been playing it here and there and just liking it more and more. Wish it was a little more upbeat throughout, but I can't complain that much.

Loving this.
|
2940603, Shortest song is the best one? Posted by osu_no_1, Sat Aug-08-15 07:40 PM
I thought she just won't believe me was the best on lonerism
Nangs might be the best on currents
Is it so great because it's short, or would it be better if it was longer?
|
2940667, I thought that was "Disciples " Posted by MME, Sun Aug-09-15 04:07 PM
Which is also fire.

2943544, after seeing them live, this grew on me. Posted by Hellyeah, Sun Sep-06-15 11:59 AM
i just have to pretend "lonerism" doesn't exist, and this becomes a great collection of good ass songs.

2943661, For someone who hadn't heard of the band before this record Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Sep-07-15 04:44 PM
this record, independent of Tame Impala's other albums, is a nice, well-made piece of music.
Like Jakob said, the roots of this album are definitely 80's New Wave synth pop, but it's really well done.
The album ends really well. The last four tracks really stood out to me.
The craftsmanship the band put into this album, makes me want to go back and listen to their earlier albums. If this record was the attempt to go mainstream to get more fans, then it might have worked in this case.
