And yeah I'm pretty sure that physical copies of the Drake record don't exist, although I think that's also due to Drake (allegedly) surprise releasing it to get out of his deal

This album isn't be dropped without warning like Beyonce or Drake, but rather like J. Cole where he announced it 3 weeks before the drop...and that had physical copies.

Think Def Jam does it for Nas last DJ album? I think Snoop album is dropping this month too.

So did he let the mixed reactions to "I" keep him from putting it on the album or was it just a stand alone single? Either way, can't wait for this album.

I think the album will more of what he did with The Blacker The Berry

I hope he's pulling a de la/tribe type move and switching to a new sound or vibe. Don't want "untitled" to be some sign of a sophomore slump. But if you count section .80

If you want to nitpick you can say he isn't trying to be edgy and just didn't have a title, or in comparison to his last one that had an acronym and everything. Think like a hater lol

I always thought those were mixtapes, but I'm like the press, I count good kid as his first album-album.

When you release that stuff....it's out!

You can't take it back once it's out there. Those were albums. At least you gotta count Section.80.

One of the first majorly confusing ones was Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa's How Fly in 2008, which wasn't super low quality or covered in DJ drops like Gucci Mane's Wilt Chamberlain series, I mean it wasn't CD quality audio but it was clearly an original product.

But even further back you could argue Little Brother and Mac Lethal called albums 'mixtapes' in 2003. Same with Talib in 2004 and Fort Minor in 2005.

But I trace the internet side of it back to 06 when Drake had Room for Improvement, Killer Mike had The Killer, Wiz Khalifa had Prince of the City and Yo Gotti had I Told U So (if I'm misremembering and this wasn't all original beats I'm sorry, it's been years).

and it was initially a free download... But I tend to refer to it as an album, too...

yeah they didn't do much to the sample, but they made a new song out of something that wasn't a rap record before, as compared to a "freestyle" over a popular beat

The Roots are even credited as the producers of the song.

Imma call it is second album.

I'd say he approaches his albums more like novels. OD & S80 are both (fantastic) collections of songs.

because that had a pop edge to it, and he put out so many songs before it came out that were just awesome. "Blacker the Berry" is a super awesome song, but it's not a single, and 'i' is a super lame song.

hip-hop heads / the internet is real excited for this but it's not the same. I don't feel that same type of furor anyway.

I don't even think the hype is the same as good kid.

I love Kendrick's music but the anticipation might feel like its high depends on your age. Old heads feel this way cause they dont really listen to anyone but Kendrick thats current in rap. People who just like boom bap shit same thing. Its not like all kids and and all genres listen to him. That video of Terio being asked about Kendrick, yeah its funny but its also a reality

he doesnt make music Terio could, would, or should understand. The most "Terio" song on his last album was Backseat Freestyle and that wasnt on the radio

This isnt like when people were waiting for The Massacre as someone suggested. It's not as anticipated on the bigger spectrum of things the way that was. Kendrick isnt a household name the way 50 became after that first album. He just isn't. I'm not saying he's not good and that theres some kids out there that listen to him but if you think every little kid like Terio is listening to Kendrick you are wrong. I'll bet you good money that most of the sales for Kendrick's album were mostly from the people who say that there isnt much hiphop out there for them.

I think Kendrick is a household name and a certain (significant) sector is looking forward to his album majorly (as am i!) but it's not as universal as it seems..

but I do think it's a pretty decent metric

The top dog version has like 6 million views on it.. youre very wrong.

I'm 23, and I feel that generally people in my age group (add/subract three years from my age to get the range) who listen to hip hop are heavily anticipating this album

but ok.

again being an old head doesnt only rely on your actual age....its a mentality. Ye, Hov are leaders in this shit and make relevant music for everyone...Ye specifically right now from clothes to music makes huge influences on the whole culture.....and hes old. Those guys are old but don't have the mentality.

I figure that "I" will serve as a resolution to the album, a message that you can love yourself for what you are despite all the bullshit outside and inside our community. I didn't love it, but I came around after the SNL performance, and it's likely to be the only "catchy" joint on the album.

Makes perfect sense. The SNL performance was great, but I still don't like the song, to be honest the only part that moves me is when thundercats bass takes center stage near the end. Hopefully you are right and the rest of the album sounds nothing like "i" and everything like "the blacker the berry", because that song is absolute flames.

That if he's not putting i up for presale then he may be tweaking it a bit

I work with teens. Kendrick is not their focus. He's on some of their radars, but they like plenty of other people way more.

Most kids don't love Kendrick.

But most of Kendrick's biggest fans are kids.

Just like J.Cole.

Both of them have mastered the "dude almost 30 still

This isn't just stuff that's not gonna find easy radio play in 2015, but in the 70's it would be everywhere..he's a much more improved songwriter and the songs are ultimately stronger.

The thing is that it's not in a pop music verse chorus verse format, add to the fact it's alot of live sounding instrumentation which is in stark contrast to the Mile Will Made it world we live in now... This album will do numbers at least initially because of the sneak attack, but it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out.

Considering he stole a bunch of Flying Lotus in Captain Murphy mode beats, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't have a more straightforward rappity rap release coming up.

That said, it's great. There should be equal slobnobbing here for Lamar as there was for D'Angelo. Didn't know he would go full Soulaquarians, lol
