Gey hype.
I was positive they were gonna Beyoncée this record. Glad to have a date.
2922639, Are they doing a physical release on the 23rd as well?
Posted by mrshow, Fri Mar-06-15 07:00 PM
2922644, Any artist that's not a moron waits a week on the physical
Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Mar-06-15 08:36 PM
Sell what you can, force people to buy it.

Shit I bet that physical copies of the Drake joint don't even exist
2922778, Yeah it just makes sense
Posted by Ketchums, Sun Mar-08-15 07:33 PM
And yeah I'm pretty sure that physical copies of the Drake record don't exist, although I think that's also due to Drake (allegedly) surprise releasing it to get out of his deal
2923363, It might be.
Posted by phemom, Thu Mar-12-15 09:10 PM
This album isn't be dropped without warning like Beyonce or Drake, but rather like J. Cole where he announced it 3 weeks before the drop...and that had physical copies.
2922650, So other than Kanye who's the next rapper to release an LP this way?
Posted by phemom, Fri Mar-06-15 10:07 PM
Think Def Jam does it for Nas last DJ album? I think Snoop album is dropping this month too.
2922654, RE: Kendrick Lamar: Untitled - March 23rd
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Fri Mar-06-15 11:25 PM
So did he let the mixed reactions to "I" keep him from putting it on the album or was it just a stand alone single? Either way, can't wait for this album.
2922670, i was a song to win that grammy...nothing more or less...
Posted by ChampD1012, Sat Mar-07-15 08:34 AM
And it worked.

I think the album will more of what he did with The Blacker The Berry
2922660, RE: Kendrick Lamar: Untitled - March 23rd
Posted by beatnik, Sat Mar-07-15 02:12 AM
I hope he's pulling a de la/tribe type move and switching to a new sound or vibe. Don't want "untitled" to be some sign of a sophomore slump. But if you count section .80
2922663, How is Untitled the sign of a sophomore slump?
Posted by mrshow, Sat Mar-07-15 03:04 AM
2922704, by not having a more proper title
Posted by beatnik, Sat Mar-07-15 03:33 PM
If you want to nitpick you can say he isn't trying to be edgy and just didn't have a title, or in comparison to his last one that had an acronym and everything. Think like a hater lol
2922849, There's a title. Just haven't revealed it yet.
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Mar-09-15 04:04 PM
Word on the street is it's

NIGGER.

Just playin.
But Kendrick was on the radio this morning and said he couldn't give out the album title.
2922692, O.D. was an album
Posted by atruhead, Sat Mar-07-15 01:41 PM
it was all original beats

this is his 4th album
2922705, word?
Posted by beatnik, Sat Mar-07-15 03:34 PM
I always thought those were mixtapes, but I'm like the press, I count good kid as his first album-album.
2922732, Artists don't get practice albums. (c) Phonte

When you release that stuff....it's out!
2922745, And I couldn't agree more
Posted by 13Rose, Sun Mar-08-15 01:46 AM
You can't take it back once it's out there. Those were albums. At least you gotta count Section.80.
2923114, rappers made it all screwy a while ago now.
Posted by Nodima, Wed Mar-11-15 12:32 PM
One of the first majorly confusing ones was Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa's How Fly in 2008, which wasn't super low quality or covered in DJ drops like Gucci Mane's Wilt Chamberlain series, I mean it wasn't CD quality audio but it was clearly an original product.

But even further back you could argue Little Brother and Mac Lethal called albums 'mixtapes' in 2003. Same with Talib in 2004 and Fort Minor in 2005.

But I trace the internet side of it back to 06 when Drake had Room for Improvement, Killer Mike had The Killer, Wiz Khalifa had Prince of the City and Yo Gotti had I Told U So (if I'm misremembering and this wasn't all original beats I'm sorry, it's been years).

2922762, The Heart Pt. 2 was a loop/sample
Posted by atruhead, Sun Mar-08-15 11:48 AM
yeah they didn't do much to the sample, but they made a new song out of something that wasn't a rap record before, as compared to a "freestyle" over a popular beat
2922765, No. He rapped over an extended Roots instrumental.
Posted by Hitokiri, Sun Mar-08-15 11:58 AM
The Roots are even credited as the producers of the song.

Posted by Nodima, Thu Mar-12-15 09:55 PM
because that had a pop edge to it, and he put out so many songs before it came out that were just awesome. "Blacker the Berry" is a super awesome song, but it's not a single, and 'i' is a super lame song.

hip-hop heads / the internet is real excited for this but it's not the same. I don't feel that same type of furor anyway.

I don't even think the hype is the same as good kid.

Posted by Heinz, Wed Mar-11-15 08:41 PM
I love Kendrick's music but the anticipation might feel like its high depends on your age. Old heads feel this way cause they dont really listen to anyone but Kendrick thats current in rap. People who just like boom bap shit same thing. Its not like all kids and and all genres listen to him. That video of Terio being asked about Kendrick, yeah its funny but its also a reality

2923216, I promise Im not trying to make this snarky
Posted by atruhead, Wed Mar-11-15 08:51 PM
but you really used Terio (a 7 year old who hangs out with French Montana, Rick Ross and DJ Khaled) to make your case for "reality" that "kids arent into Kendrick Lamar"?

he doesnt make music Terio could, would, or should understand. The most "Terio" song on his last album was Backseat Freestyle and that wasnt on the radio
2923218, Thats what im saying tho
Posted by Heinz, Wed Mar-11-15 09:04 PM
This isnt like when people were waiting for The Massacre as someone suggested. It's not as anticipated on the bigger spectrum of things the way that was. Kendrick isnt a household name the way 50 became after that first album. He just isn't. I'm not saying he's not good and that theres some kids out there that listen to him but if you think every little kid like Terio is listening to Kendrick you are wrong. I'll bet you good money that most of the sales for Kendrick's album were mostly from the people who say that there isnt much hiphop out there for them.

Migos? Kendrick is bigger
Young Thug? Kendrick is bigger
Terio said he listens to Future who cant even go gold

who else is making "childish" music?

you take any kid 16+ they arent dissing Kendrick
2923227, Agreed
Posted by Stadium Status, Wed Mar-11-15 11:13 PM
Let me cite the infallible Youtube views:

- Blacker the Berry video has 540k views in three weeks
- Big Sean's Blessings video has 6 million views in one week
- Chris Brown & Tyga - Ayo has 21 million views in one month

I think Kendrick is a household name and a certain (significant) sector is looking forward to his album majorly (as am i!) but it's not as universal as it seems..
2923228, Also the "infallible" is a joke
Posted by Stadium Status, Wed Mar-11-15 11:14 PM
but I do think it's a pretty decent metric
2923317, That blacker the Berry is a fan video you nerd..

Posted by Kosa12, Thu Mar-12-15 02:42 PM
I'm 23, and I feel that generally people in my age group (add/subract three years from my age to get the range) who listen to hip hop are heavily anticipating this album
2923360, Lol u posted that with Illadelph halflife as your avy in 2015
Posted by Heinz, Thu Mar-12-15 08:59 PM
but ok.

again being an old head doesnt only rely on your actual age....its a mentality. Ye, Hov are leaders in this shit and make relevant music for everyone...Ye specifically right now from clothes to music makes huge influences on the whole culture.....and hes old. Those guys are old but don't have the mentality.

2923385, with titles like "King Kunta", "Instituionalized", and "Complexion"
Posted by Madvillain 626, Thu Mar-12-15 11:17 PM
I figure that "I" will serve as a resolution to the album, a message that you can love yourself for what you are despite all the bullshit outside and inside our community. I didn't love it, but I came around after the SNL performance, and it's likely to be the only "catchy" joint on the album.
2923387, I can see that
Posted by Kosa12, Thu Mar-12-15 11:46 PM
Makes perfect sense. The SNL performance was great, but I still don't like the song, to be honest the only part that moves me is when thundercats bass takes center stage near the end. Hopefully you are right and the rest of the album sounds nothing like "i" and everything like "the blacker the berry", because that song is absolute flames.

pro-black shit, trying to stealth his way into households

Cool

I think he has enough white fans that he could have just
made the song he wanted to make, though

He's playing with house money, you have to use those
opportunities to say what you want

But he kinda did that with that cut after the Grammy's

so I support this

Most kids don't love Kendrick.

But most of Kendrick's biggest fans are kids.

Just like J.Cole.

Both of them have mastered the "dude almost 30 still
sounding wide-eyed and post-adolescent" lane

not mad AT ALL

Hell, it's a healthier gimmick than some of the others
that rappers use

But it is true.

I support and purchase music from both too

I think I'm done with Cole, though, the lyrics are too
insufferably immature...Bada$$ sounds more grown quite
franky

Dude built an amazing sound for the last three releases (Im counting Overly Dedicated and Section 80 as well) and just decided to say "fuck it ima rap over some throw back 70s funk bullshit for 13 songs"..

Ass Cheeks.. Str8 Ass Cheeks.

Might evven be worse than Electric Circus when that dropped.

2923780, Its interesting how in music criticism we also play armchair A&R

This isn't just stuff that's not gonna find easy radio play in 2015, but in the 70's it would be everywhere..he's a much more improved songwriter and the songs are ultimately stronger.

The thing is that it's not in a pop music verse chorus verse format, add to the fact it's alot of live sounding instrumentation which is in stark contrast to the Mile Will Made it world we live in now... This album will do numbers at least initially because of the sneak attack, but it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out.

Considering he stole a bunch of Flying Lotus in Captain Murphy mode beats, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't have a more straightforward rappity rap release coming up.

That said, it's great. There should be equal slobnobbing here for Lamar as there was for D'Angelo. Didn't know he would go full Soulaquarians, lol
