2920241, Official D'Angelo 2015 Tour Post
Posted by rubberbaby_ed1, Wed Feb-11-15 07:45 AM
I thought that maybe we're not supposed to talk about it, but then I saw that other post about the Apollo Show which didn't get deleted, so I figured we just don't care?

Well, I do, and it doesn't feel right to go to the .org to get my d'news.

Not sure if the US leg of the tour will also be called The Second Coming Tour, so I kept it general.

2920321, I was there. My thoughts:
Posted by meeatt, Wed Feb-11-15 08:26 PM
D was out there like he had something to prove. Like "I'm BACK, motherfuckers." Lot of energy---looked happy and carefree up there at the same time. My thoughts/highlights:

was giddy as hell that he opened up with "Prayer." -- just him on stage and the band slowly filed in. that's a deep album cut i would never expect to see performed live, but it was the PERFECT opener. D was going in with the church vocals and the stage lights off, and it grabbed everybody right out of the gate.

Back to The Future -- came OFF. another cut i wasn't expecting to hear, and was surprised it got one of the biggest reactions of the night. same for Tutu. i looked around at the crowd and folks were JAMMING. very diverse crowd too. you had your middle-aged black women who came to hear the Brown Sugar stuff, you had your white hippy/jam-band crowd that love the new shit, you had your beatheads, and it seemed like a lot of rich foreigners who just came to see what all the fuss was about over D.

Brown Sugar - new arrangement was dope like previous poster said--more jazzy.

Really Love / One Mo Gin (VERY extended version) - this was probably the second highlight of the show for me. it showed once again that the biggest draw with D is "mostly tha voice." and as much as i love the guitar-heavy stuff on Messiah, it just doesn't come off as well live as when it's just D crooning over some mellow tones from the band.

Alright - was great to see them do this. Chris Dave sounded EXACTLY like the record with those fills.

Untitled -- the necessary closer, and of course he murked it. would've been nice to hear Another Life though. i think a lot of people, my girl most of all, were hoping to hear that.

that's all i can remember for now, but yeah. most of all it was great to see D having so much fun up there---interacting with the front row crowd, dancing, clapping, joking with the band. just feeling it. i loved it. the classic comeback story.

show was about 2 and 1/2 hours strong. songs he did, as best i can remember:

Prayer
1000 Deaths
Feel Like Makin Love
Really Love
One Mo Gin
Alright
Aint That Easy
Sugah Daddy
The Charade
Back to the Future
Left & Right
Chicken Grease
Lady
Brown Sugar
Tutu

D'Angelo is as dope and fresh as ever. The band is so tight it's ridiculous. The sound at the Showbox wasn't too great, but still had a fantastic time at the show!

You know how people say they’ve been waiting for 14 years for this album? Well, I have been W A I T I N G 14 years for this album. Like most of you it was kind of easy in the beginning. Tales from the studio, and hunting down live bootlegs and outtakes kept us busy. Then we started worrying cause Quest and D weren’t talking and we didn’t get any news besides that car crash. The Snoop, Saadiq and Andre 3000 collabos proved he was alive, not much more. I started to brace myself for the possibility that D would die before I got to see him live (just like James Brown did after canceling the show I had tickets to and a month before the make-up date). Then we got a little hope again, mostly because his chief of communications A. Thompson picked up work again - the Really Love “leak” was probably the most excited I got in a while about the real possibility of an album coming out. But it was also the last time I allowed myself to become that. The 2012 European tour was a weird half-hearted effort (there were new songs though!), the following isolated appearances mostly included covers. I sure kicked myself for not being at brothers in arms.
At the end of the RBMA talk I witnessed Quest doing his thing again, but by then I was 100% fatalist: if it drops, it will, if not, we’ll always have Voodoo.
And then it did drop. Out of the blue. And it was GOOD. It was much less different than I expected it to be and I was wondering if the fact that I instantly loved it (and didn’t need some getting used to) might actually be a bad thing long-term. So far that couldn’t be farther from the truth and BM has been my audio instagram filter for whatever my eyes see around me for the past two months.

I guess I want to tell you that I was very excited about this show (prudence still made me check the background singers' twitter to see whether they had actually landed in Switzerland, lol)

Show was billed for 8pm. I had worked at the venue so I could get there by 5pm. Pino and Sharkey were fiddling around a little on their instruments. Cleo was practicing the Fred Wesley Four Play/Step in the Arena horn stabs. Soundcheck was really short at around 6:30.

Alan Leeds is the boss. He doesn’t want any tourists in the room. I get a pass and tell him that the place had seen two legendary nights - both being prince after show/private parties ('93 and ’98) - and that tonight felt equally big.

Show starts at 8:45. The venue is quite intimate with about a 1,200 capacity and it was packed. Every professional musician in Switzerland is in the room and they join the rest of the very nicely mixed crowd in singing Happy Birthday.

Please forgive me for not taking notes and for forgetting to take a picture of the setlist, I was too busy having fun. I don’t recall a difference to the Apollo show though, besides the fact that there was no Tutu (sorry, still no “Another Life”). Band was the same too (no horns though. Oh, and also, definitely Jermaine Holmes).

D and the whole band looked like they were really enjoying themselves. There was none of the nervousness that the SNL performance had on D’s part.

A few observations:
- The Vanguard is TIGHT!
- It’s just incredible to see/hear CDD, Pino, Sharkey, Jesse, and Cleo bend time.
- Pino is a damn monster looking freaking effortless all the time. And man, does he have a lot of fans in Switzerland.
- Morris Day is cool. Jesse Johnson is ice cold.
- This show has definitely been put together with great care. It’s polished, rehearsed, song transitions are beautiful. It works so well - the crowd could not have been happier
- I’m so glad One Mo’ Gin is getting an extended treatment and the reharmonizations at the end of the song are heavenly.
- I SAW A UNICORN! Sharkey and Jesse missed a cue at the 6:40 mark here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mxnbYSDW9o
- The sound was really awful. The audience on the floor basically only heard guitars. It’s not the venue’s fault.

Last night was everything I needed.

Oh, one more thing: There was a video production crew on stage. :)
2920660, Thank you!

the falsetto on the verses is so friggin high.

and since he cant skip 'untitled'...

but that doesn't really make sense though.

2921295, London 20th Feb Thoughts:
Posted by cal.25, Sun Feb-22-15 05:48 PM
All of what I thought of the show has been said before, but here are a few additional things:

GOOSEBUMPS during the first song Prayer, especially during the 'riiiiiseeee' part. Prayer and 1000 weren't my favourites from the album, but hearing them rocked out live but them into a new light for me.

Extended version of One Mo'gin was WOAH, and he went straight into the crowd during song too!!

Brown sugar remix was too good, the funkadelic bridge section is genius.

While D was changing into his Zoro suit, the build up for Really Love had the haunting Egyptian Song strings all over it (definitely Quest's guidance)

I think it had mostly BM cuts, but still a good amount of older songs, which catered for everyone. Slightly surprised there wasn't one cover too.

The band were KILLING it, probably the tightest band I've ever seen. D was going over the top calling out JB style hits, I think he caught out each band member at least once haha except for Pino - he's too solid in the game that shit

If I had to pick one improvement - I would've liked to have seen a horn section included. But apart from that 9.999999/10

Highlights were The Charade and Untitled but they were 11/10

Crowd was great too.

no changes to the setlist, compared to the Frankfurt show as far as i can tell.
show was great from start to finish. the house was packed and the band did their thing.
that prayer/1000 deaths is a great start. so many highlights but the new songs (tutu, really love, back 2 the future) were personal favs.
they had to restart untitled because the amp gave in to pino's mean low end...

2921707, 02/16/15 - Paris, France - Palais de Congres (OKP Swipe)
Posted by fwmj, Wed Feb-25-15 07:32 PM
http://www.okayplayer.com/news/dangelo-paris-photos-recap.html

It was just before Christmas last year that I got a call from my friend Gene.

“If you can square away tickets for us, I will use miles and points to get us flights and hotel rooms for the D’Angelo Tour in Europe.”

Bet.

Not for a second did I assume he was joking, playing off everyone’s excitement about the surprise release of Black Messiah. I knew he was just as serious as I was about seeing D’Angelo perform this album.

I haven’t had a chance to see D’Angelo live since he toured his sophomore album Voodoo over 14 years ago. I missed out on the tour the weekend he and the Soultronics came to Houston, as I was out of town competing at a college track meet. Missing that tour–as well as the Okayplayer Tour–in the early 2000s are among my greatest regrets as far as missed opportunities as a music otaku. Gene had seen the Voodoo tour 4 times during that tour’s run, so he knew what to expect. I could only imagine.

Not willing to risk D going AWOL and missing an opportunity to see him, I put in the call to a higher power (thank you based Ahmir!), secured tickets to the show in Paris and we were off.

Monday, the night of the show, my guy Gene and I emerged from the Port Maillot Metro stop before the massive Palais de Congrès complex. We showed up a little early to meet a friend that was attending the concert with us and to pick up our tickets at will call before things got too hectic. We entered the foyer to the Grand Amphitheatre to a gathering of giddy and nervous fans also there for the concert.

Once everyone we were attending the concert with arrived, we entered the amphitheatre and found our seats. Having called in this huge favour, we didn’t know what to expect but found ourselves 9 rows back from the stage, dead center.

Absolute perfect seats.

We weren’t so close that we were looking up D’s nostrils the whole show, but weren’t so far back that it was Ants vs. Termites on stage either. The sound would later surround us. It was perfect.

The amphitheater was pregnant with anticipation for the band to hit the stage, while the house speakers played a polite mix of low key instrumentals and local French hip-hop. The crowd would break out into random spikes of applause and clapping every time there was dead space in the mix between songs, as if that would hasten the band’s arrival. Don’t we all know by now D’Angelo moves at his own pace?

The lights dim and D’Angelo comes out solo center stage at the mic stand, a silhouette against four illuminated 30’+ banners of what looks like velvet draped from the rafters at the back of the stage as he sings the opening verse to “Prayer.”

The Vanguard sneaks on stage, one by one, under the cloak of darkness–and before you know it the entire band is there with him, moving and swaying like phantoms in the dark at their respective stations as they transition into “1,000 Deaths,” Khalil Abdul Muhammad speech and all. The spotlights finally rise to illuminate the band at the chorus to thunderous applause and cheers form the crowd.

At the song’s close, D’ picks up his guitar for “It Ain’t Easy,” the album’s starter, after which he introduces each member of the Vanguard to the crowd. By this point, men and women alike from the seats higher up in the amphitheatre had made their way down to the stage, flooding the aisles and reaching for D’, hands and arms outstretched.

“Let me know if y’all recognize this one!” D’ says to the crowd before launching into an alternate version of “Feels Like Making Love.” As the song’s instrumental fades, he leaves the stage and the lights dim as the strings from “Really Love” grow increasingly louder and louder. A spotlight hits Kendra Foster, who is dancing and spinning about in an ornate gold and black marble patterned winged jumper—a butterfly.

As Kendra recites the Spanish intro over the song’s strings, Sharkey switches to Acoustic guitar and plucks the songs unmistakable chords as Pino Paladino walking the bass and Chris “Daddy” Dave brings in the drums.

D’Angelo returns to the stage as Kendra is finishing, rocking a red and black lumberjack poncho—his first of serveral costume changes of the night. The crowd, in a trance, hums and mumbles and sings along with D’ in a collective sway.

“One Mo’ Gin”–one of my personal favourites from Voodoo–saw D’Angelo finally get behind the keys. By the songs end he was touching the outstretched hands of his Parisian fans eventually sitting on the edge of the stage singing an extended chorus before sliding into an alternate version of “Brown Sugar” whose lyrical familiarity elicited the crowd to sing along.

After another dimming of the lights, D’ returns with a black leather trench with a hoodie cloaking his face as the Vanguard launches into “The Charade” rivaling their performance on SNL. Subdued at first, the performance grows in intensity and volume by the first chorus, the crowd in sync with all four vocals “All we wanted was a chance to talk.” Beautiful to witness, 4,000 miles from home, still having this song and chorus resonate.

Riding the wave of energy from “The Charade” the band slides into “Sugah Daddy,” perhaps the most infectious groove on the entire album. By this point I really start to notice how much fun everyone on stage seems to be having. D’Angelo looks happy. Happy to be back. Happy to be performing. Happy to be sharing music he’s been toiling over for 15 years. The interplay between Pino and Chris is something to be felt and seen on this song. The entire band double claps at “…this the way I pat my baby on my butt (good god)” shortly before Kendra gets to lead the chorus before the second verse. The song is abruptly cut short to raucous cheers and applause from the audience as the band stands motionless soaking it all in, hardly able to contain their giddy smiles, before picking right back up with the same energy. If you were paying close attention, you could see Kendra’s smirk as she sang the song’s barely-decipherable “pussy fart” line, like a joke only a few were in on.

The performance seemingly ends, with the music dropping and D’Angelo does a lil jig/step/skank on stage before the Vanguard extends the groove to “Sugah Daddy” and everyone dances around on stage playing their instruments as if the center stage mic stand were a camp fire. Sharkey moves stage right to play along Jesse Johnson, Kendra sashaying stage left to join the other two backup singers, D’Angelo everywhere. I might have even seen some tambourines.

The crowd is electric. I don’t know how any of the other cities already hit by the band on this tour were, but I’m so glad we saw it in Paris. By now the crowed is screaming and clapping and chanting and the band leaves the stage. For 7 straight minutes the audience screams and pleads for the band to return, and sure enough they do—to “Back To The Future I & II”

Again, the give and take between Pino and Chris Dave is so crucial right here. I can’t decide in my mind if the “Back To The Future”s are supposed to function as interludes on the album, namely because of their length (aren’t interludes short?), but it’s definitely one of many high points on the project for me and seeing it get the extra life it’s getting from Pino is such a warm feeling. Witnessing D’Angelo sing about how things stay the same despite change back in Richmond, chasing highs, and strangers wondering about the shape he’s in (physically or mentally or spiritually) in such a seemingly comfortable way before such a large crowd—the cognitive dissonance is thick enough to choke on, considering all the lore and stories and articles out there speculating on his insecurities and demons.

The band smoothly weaves into “Chicken Grease.” As you can expect the guitars and bass get to solo out and play off each other, working the crowd into a fever pitch. With the frenzy at its peak, the band leaves the stage yet again. I could hardly hear myself think, Did they play “The Root” Yet? Are they gonna do “Lady?”–Wait, the show couldn’t really be over yet could it?

D’ and the Vanguard remerge from back stage for a 15 minute rendition of “Untitled” AKA “The-Song-Every-15-Year-Old-Walking-Around-Today-Was-Conceived-To.” D’s control of the band’s movement and play has been masterful the entire night, and especially so during this song. Perhaps the song most sung-along-to by the audience that night, I looked around the audience and saw women at the point of tears during this performance. And when he let them know he “loves to make you wet, in between your thighs”? Outta here. Could have drowned in there, and I’m not talking about tears anymore.

Extending the chorus to the point it sounded as if a record was on loop asking the crowd “How Does It Feel?” each member of the band leaves the stage one by one. Chris Dave first. Sharkey Next. Jesse Johnson next. D’ transitions to the keys back, center stage. The two back up singers leave one by one, and then Kendra to heightened cheers and applause. Bass and Keys are all that’s left. Pookie leaves next, with D’Angelo and Pino remaining on stage. They play off each other for a few bars, and then Pino himself leaves with D’ alone under spotlight on keys recanting the chorus before answering the question himself and walking off into the darkness.

when we crafted the show he wanted to hold out some things.

there is after all a second go round later this year.

b/c really....

the show seems incredible as is and if it comes to Chicago i'm in the house for sure. even w/o AL.

but...damn.

it's like when Prince cut 'Adore' during the SOTT Tour. which never even came to America. but i have a copy of him and that band doing Adore in rehearsal. and it's like...why wasn't it in the show???

i don't want D to make that 'mistake'. mistake is in quotes for a reason. b/c that SOTT tour was still awesome but if P and the band had actually performed more songs from that album (you have the same rehearsals i have i'm sure where they performed every single song on SOTT (http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/ug2p/ it's "Now's the Time" for the uninitiated)) it'd have been even greater, IMO.

but i'm only one fan. and i'll take the show as i get it.
2924479, I'm guessing there's no way to add Smooth to the mix

2923275, AMAZING show!

Seen D on the Voodoo tour, and he took it to a whole other level last night. Except for the JB/Prince splits from his Voodoo days, D hasn't lost a step! Vanguard is James-Brown-tight, don't even compare them to the Soultronics band.

Pino, badass bass
Chris Daddy Dave, drums
Sharkey, rhythm guitar
Jesse Johnson, lead guitar
Boogie Sample, keys
Kendra, backgd vox
Jermaine & other dude, backgd vox
2 horn players
3 string players

D got on stage at about 955/10pm, doors opened at 8

SET:
Khalil Muhammad 1000 Deaths intro
Prayer (D alone in dark singing, during 2nd verse band comes on stage)
1000 Deaths
Ain't That Easy
introduced band members
Feel Like Makin Love

strings played/Kendra did a dance number & spanish intro
Really Love
One Mo Gin (the background vox vamps on this, woo! and D did singing far away from mic like Al Green breakdown, whew!)

HEATWAVE'S STAR OF THE STORY cover

Brown Sugar (the band DESTROYED it on the bridge vamps)
The Charade
Sugar Daddy
(he took a LONG time to change and come back on stage)
Lady
Back to the Future
Left & Right
Chicken Grease/What It Do
(these three like melded into one bec he went into James Brown mode and just started vamping and having Vanguard do multiple hits.)

i left after that, heard he came back and did Tutu & Untitled.

No Another Life. But Star of the Story cover made up for it.
D was killing it with the James-Brown-hit me's with the band too.

Best tour/show of 2015!

that heatwave cut is def a questlove pick. quest been raving abt that track for the longest. first time i heard him talking abt it was when he guest-hosted the gilles peterson show back in early 2000.

i still believe the "new" versions of 'brown sugar' and 'lady' are a bit meh. they work way better in their original form. that slow funk.

i'm glad he kept this one off the record.
it's a party jam that works well live, but on record??
sounds to much like miles-at-the-park 'beautiful night' vs '2 nigs united'.

on 'charade' and 'untitled' he's jacking prince as well,
but there he puts his own spin on it.

as for chicken grease...
i wish he would just play the og version.
same as w brown sugar and lady.
that slow funk.

if there's ever a new record and a new tour, he should keep it as "simple"
as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4XI6LXCsH8
or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34S8mat51KQ

Posted by SoWhat, Tue Apr-28-15 03:38 PM
http://chicagoist.com/2015/04/28/north_coast_announces_2015_linup.php

North Coast Music Festival just announced the lineup for this years edition of the festival in Union Park and it's a pretty impressive array of artists, including a few notable scores for the smaller festival.

Headliners include D’Angelo and The Vanguard as well as The Chemical Brothers and a yet to be named third headliner to be announced May 12. Obviously getting D’Angelo is a major coup. Produced by Questlove, his latest album Black Messiah is one of the strongest works of R&B we’ve heard in quite awhile and rested firmly atop many “best album of the year” lists, a huge comeback effort from the crooner.

Chemical Brothers headlined the very first North Coast back in 2009 and are slated to return this year as they tour in support of their forthcoming album, their first one in five years, Born in the Echoes. The first single, “Sometimes I Feel So Deserted” was released last week, you can check it out here.

Other notable acts include The Roots, Chromeo, Tycho, Wale and Twin Shadow as well as local artists such as Green Velvet, Lili K and The O’Mys. Check out the full lineup below.

it may have passed the first voodoo tour show in 2000 for me.

d'angelo genuinely looked like he was having the time of his life up there. all smiles and love to the crowd. even during the fuck-ups--someone hit twice when he only held up one finger; he and the crowd laughed.

his voice was ON POINT. guitar playing was sharp. hasn't lost a dance step either. very high energy.

I was expecting a "prayer"/"1000 deaths" start, but he hit us with "ain't that easy"...and then "betray my heart"!!! not mad at all.

here was the setlist:

ain't that easy

vanguard

betray (so early in the setlist like that??? made me cry. amazing how beautiful and up-beat the song is live)

Spanish joint (first time I ever heard it live...has he done it before??)

really love

charade

brown sugar

sugah daddy (closed with "FORTY FIVE AND A HALF!!!")

ENCORE

another life (even more drunk)

back to the future

left and right (perfect transition from B2TF)

chicken grease/what it do ("alright, for reals y'all...good night...this is it")

ENCORE 2

tutu (ended with a waltz. DOPE)

untitled (best live version I've heard; much slower with more pops; teased the opening line like 5 times; crowd was going crazy)

he ended at the piano solo just like he did in 2000. pino was the second-to-last to leave, as I think it should be.

total show time about 2 hours 15 mins.

2934597, Oakland mini review (no spoilers)
Posted by jesustrauss, Mon Jun-08-15 09:23 PM
Oakland went hard last night. Transitioning from high stakes
local basketball (because the Warriors are a local team,
despite all the TV references to san francisco), D'angelo
picked up the energy where the game left off, and brought the
funk to Oakland on the first night of his headlining US tour
for the first time in 15 years.

The energy the Vanguard brought to the stage, led by one of
the best performers of our generation, was held down by Chris
Daddy Dave and Pino Palladino. As to be expected from those
two, they played consistently, while inserting their own
nuance and flair. Each of them had a solo at some point in the
night. The show was the structured with funky break downs
interludes similar to those in the Voodoo tour in 2000, but
this time coming more consistently throughout.

The band play an hour long set. Then came back for another 45+
minute encore and then to finish off with a few songs to leave
4000 people leaving awestruck.

Big shouts to Kendra Foster. I had heard about her presence in
the Vanguard and in D's recording process. I appreciated her
but I didn't quite understand. I saw the Vanguarf perform
opening for mary j blige I about 2 years ago in the bay area.
They brought the energy and the hype and were amazing, but it
was a short set and very much focused on D'angelo's shine.
Last night, Kendra Foster was as close to stealing the show as
I think anyone would be from D.

The show had incredible lighting design, and other than some
sound glitches the sound was pretty impressive.  The only
song I will mention specifically, is the Charade. As to be
expected, it was powerful live.  But dedicating the song to
Oscar Grant in Oakland, on the first night of the tour, with
black fists raised high, was a powerful moment. (Just 2 days
before the show, Oakland police killed a black man who head
pulled over and was sleeping in his car, and also had a loaded
gun on the seat of car. In order to deal with him, the police
shot at his car with bean bag guns, and then with live
ammunition, killing him. The crisis is very present here).

In a 2.5 hour set, D'angelo and the Vanguard held up to
anyone's high expectations, and went beyond. Intense show,
powerful energy and the funk was BROUGHT. From Black Power to
a fully infectious dance party, and just on the first night,
everyone who sees the show is in for a treat.

I will be excited to catch them tonight at the Nokia in LA,

2934674, found out an hour before showtime that a friend of 35 years passed away
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Jun-09-15 04:23 PM
one of three brothers that grew up down the street from me in South Jersey that I've known since age 3, from a family I spend Christmas Eve with after church every year to this day and whose family house is the perfect buzzed-up trudge home in the snow around the time Christmas Eve is turning into Christmas morning.

Maintenance found my man's body in his hotel room in NYC while out there on business and no one's really sure what happened.

Shit had me blown, couldn't eat dinner, didn't know what to do with myself, wasn't sure who to even call to talk to about it because I didn't wanna start calling east-coast people with horrific news at 11 PM EST on a Monday night, was sitting on the edge of my bed in my apartment in Santa Monica driving myself crazy thinking maybe I needed to just try going to bed or laying down to watch a movie but instead just finally said "fuck this, I gotta go see D".

Seemed like the only thing that might be able to help soothe the soul at that point was some musical deliverance, already had tickets for a later show on this tour with people so had missed my window to cop these.

SeatGeek App wasn't giving me any love either so I just went to the liquor store up the street from me, copped a power bar, a lemonade and the $80 dollar max cash-back from the register and hopped in my car playing Black Messiah figuring I would rely on concert karma.....if I made the trek, I would get in somehow.

Parked at LA Live just shy of 9:30, went to the Will Call booth downstairs and asked the people working it if any seats had been late-released for sale, they said no.

I asked if D was on already, they said yeah it'd been about a half hour.

Said thanks anyway, started walking to find a scalper when another girl overhearing said "no, he's actually just getting ready to go on now and there is a few GA seats for sale at the box office".

Bet.

Booked upstairs to the box office, copped a GA floor seat for $75, walked in just as the band was building the intro and found my spot by Kendra's side of the stage just as D emerged to open up with "Ain't That Easy".

This was where I needed to be last night. The band was so fucking incredible and my own sober-but-shocked headspace was in such a strange is-this-shit-all-real state that this music had me levitating.

Little chunks of lyrics started taking on different tones its authors probably hadn't intended considering the context:

"you can't leave me, it ain't that easy, to walk away, when I want you to stay"

"I just wanna go back, back to the way it was now-now-nah"

and of course "Another Life" which I had no idea had been added to the set but remains my favorite song on the album.

It would have been the perfect date-night D set considering most of the songs on the menu were the ones mostly related to some form of love and/or lust.....but as for me making a last minute decision to join the fray dolo, the music made for a fine date in its own right and the spiritual side of the songs really showed thru, culminating in the "Untitled" finale which took on its own thing.

D looked so alive and present, he might even be getting that video frame back a bit, not that I was really checking.

At one point he was rocking some kind of Black-Moses/George-Clinton type of church robe while directing traffic up front and it was just witnessing an artist in full command of his powers.

This did not feel like no knock-off act.

This band didn't feel like they were just putting themselves thru the paces of recreating JB's Tami Show or P's Parade Tour.

This was their thing and it was all of ours there sharing it with him too.

At times I musta looked half-crazy for anyone dumb enough to be paying attention to me instead of D, was definitely welling up a bit during "Another Life" but with a smile on my face.

Jesse was of course great, Pino was Pino but to me the standout of the show besides the obvious was Kendra Foster.

That girl is a star.

Maybe it was slightly affected by her being the closest one to me but it was hard to take my eyes off her and she never stopped moving the entire night.

Much thanks to D and the whole Vanguard for not only one of the best shows I've seen in years but one of the most crucial on a personal level in the wake of some horrible shit.

RIP RGD.

I Just Wanna Go Back.

Amazing show. He made up for coming on at 9:20ish with masterful performances. I didn't get a chance to catch the Australian singer who opened up (what's her name?), but from what I heard she had some pipes. I will look more in to her music.

My only gripe would have also been the encores. However, it was a brilliant show by one of, if not, my favorite artist.

"Another Life" is amazing live and Kendra Foster complements D'angelo's rejuvenated shine.

Bravo D! Great show...

2936338, detroit report
Posted by thebigfunk, Sun Jun-28-15 03:32 PM
Last night's show in Detroit was outstanding. He took the stage at 10 (about an hour after the opener, they played Dilla during the interim but folks started to get restless). Played everything but 3.5 cuts off Black Messiah (missing: Til It's Done, 1000 Deaths, Prayer, and they only played an interlude of The Door). Four cuts from Voodoo (Chicken Grease, Left & Right, Spanish Joint (!!!), closing with Untitled). Only Brown Sugar off the first album. Setlist seems a bit short in retrospect, but so many of the song went on and on, turned into extended funk workouts with D and the band really showing their stuff. Show ended around 12:15 I think, with probably about fifteen minutes of break time total, so about a 2 hour show.

What can be said that others haven't said? It was thrilling just to see D so happy. I wasn't even looking forward to Untitled that much, but they turned that shit *out*. It was great to see the crowd, too --- completely into it, dancing, nodding, singing along. It's been a long time since the Voodoo tour, and I was much younger then, but this show feels looser, a bit more natural, and from song to song it just moved with a really compelling momentum. Wasn't a moment of down time.

A few downsides:
- Others have said they enjoyed the opener, Mel Mac, I didn't really get into it. They did a version of Grandma's Hands that almost felt sacrilegious, turning it into a loud monstrosity of a thing that pretty much annihilated the vulnerability and fragility of the original. I'm all for covers that reinterpret in a meaningful way, but this just felt unnecessary and overblown.
- The mix on the sound was really weird --- not sure if it was the venue or what, but they seemed to get it a bit more in check halfway through. Could have been where I was sitting (balcony, far left), too, but it just seemed really unbalanced to the point where it was almost --- *almost* --- distracting at times. D's piano was drowned out for a lot of the show, too, which was a real shame.
------ EDIT: Watching this clip from the show now (https://youtu.be/1zJ7A5YGaMo) and it seems like it was more where I was sitting --- this was shot on the floor and the sound seems much more balanced. I wondered if that was the case last night and almost went down to the floor, but it was pretty packed and I was enjoying the view where I was.

But really, the show exceeded expectations and provided some much needed catharsis in the midst of some pretty crazy times socially/politically. And I got the sense that that was exactly what D wanted to do: just get everyone to loosen up, have a good time, get some positivity flowing, and collectively enjoy an amazing musical experience. In that, he succeeded abundantly. Don't have to say this here, but if you can catch the tour, do --- I drove 4.5 hours in terrible rainstorms for pretty much the whole way, and it was undoubtedly worth every bit of the effort.

every time he shouted out 'Detroit city!' i was so confused - b/c i forgot i was not in Chicago. LOL

that show was hot to death.

i agree...it was just what i needed and i too drove through 4 or 5 hours of rain to get there and i don't regret it at all. i am sad i'll miss the Chicago show @ the North Coast festival...largely b/c THE ROOTS are playing the same day and i fully expect some crossover between their sets. damn it. but at least i saw that show in Detroit.

AND THEY DID SPANISH JOINT!!! i was sorely disappointed after seeing the Voodoo show b/c SJ was probably my favorite joint on that album back then. when they did it in Detroit i almost hurt myself and the ppl around me dancing to it. that and 'Back to the Future' were the highlights for me. well, and that FIRE version of 'Untitled'.

Feeling some kinda way about bringing this Black Messiah vinyl to get signed, but I'd be salty if I saw someone else with one.

But yeah, I'll be there at the Cosmo tonight.

Haha! Did you end up getting it signed??

My highlight was him slapping my hand twice during "Sugah Daddy" and "What it Do"

Dope show.

2941965, Nope.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Sat Aug-22-15 11:03 PM
It's cool though. Show was great.
I didn't want to interrupt the show throwing my record around.

Surprised to see how many were heading for the exits after the first encore (and the 2nd).
2942073, i know!

I was thinking "y'all never been to a concert before???" everyone knows you don't leave until the venue lights come on and they play their muzak! AND it's d'angelo...he's gonna play "untitled" as the closer! geez...

2942224, Has D veered from his set list or given the typical touring show?
Posted by Tony Sparks, Wed Aug-26-15 03:54 PM
What I liked about his NYC Best Buy show was was he did to One Mo Gin, all the James Brown "hit me"s and Heatwave's Star of the Story

But it seems the last recent audios and videos are same ol' set list, same songs, nothing added or spiced up.
2942250, Well

Yeah, they really trimmed the fat and kept the meat for the festivals. This here still seems like a pretty tight show though. And it flows well:

Ain't That Easy
Vanguard Theme
Betray My Heart
Spanish Joint
Really Love
The Charade
Brown Sugar
Sugah Daddy
Untitled

Sugah Daddy gets high on JB hit me's though lol

Stuff like What it do, Back, Chicken and Another Life gets added when there's more time.

They've stopped playing Prayer, 1000 deaths, Smooth, Makin Love, One Mogin, Lady, Star and Till its done it seems.

In my opinion they've perfected the show, but no more surprises since the festival season indeed.
2942733, just bought tickets to see D'Angelo in Atlanta/Afropunk Fest

$60 for D'Angelo, PE, Suicidal Tendencies, etc.
2943672, Minneapolis @ First Ave, September 6th.

I was in there. THEY. KILLED. SHIT!!!!!!

Shout out to Chris "Daddy" Dave and the rest of the Vanguard maaaaan those grooves were SNAPPING the fuck off. You just can't talk about a D'Angelo and not mention these cats to me. Dope show, and I was one of the minority of folk' who wasn't feeling the album.
2949904, All extra late... I was there too.

It was incredible. I really enjoyed the Brothers in Arms show a couple years back, but this was a whole nother level. So fucking good.

Referring to Tip's apple music radio show:

Not available outside the US, that's why.
