Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-16-15 12:05 AM
Outdere. Won't have a chance to listen tonight, but I'm riding to work with it in the morning.
2916532, His entire sound should be crafted around Escape 120
Posted by stone_phalanges, Fri Jan-16-15 02:48 AM
He has a few songs on here that take him out of his 90s nostalgia box and I think they are his best work. I love the album but I think he still has a ton of room to grow. This would be better as a pre-debut album.
2916533, I don't care what ya'll say
Posted by stone_phalanges, Fri Jan-16-15 03:45 AM
I love this. This is exactly what I want to hear. I feel like this and the Sleater Kinney album have me set for the year.
2916551, everything i've heard so far has been great.

So its going to be called 'trite' or 'unimaginative'

2916788, Why make this comparison in the first place?
Posted by Ketchums, Sat Jan-17-15 04:35 PM
This doesn't have anything to do with RTJ 1-2.

Also, Pitchfork loved 1999; just weren't feeling Summer Knights, same way that a lot of people weren't. Doesn't mean they don't respect him as a rapper.
2916791, Me personally I think Joey better. He should get more love than them.

2917200, okay, I have heard songs here and there before this album
Posted by High Society, Tue Jan-20-15 05:08 PM
never checked out any projects in full before this debut album.

this album is FANTASTIC.
I love the production, Hit Boy continuously surprises me
with his range.

A samiyam beat? that's a good look.
I can see why FlyLo wanted to get a beat on this album.
He coulda made something that fit well on here.

His flow and sound doesn't seem forced, it sounds like what he was
inspired by and he's crafted a flow his own in 2015 that's inspired
by the golden age of hiphop, that time period we're all supposed to love.

I think the album really gets going with Hazeus View and DOES NOT let up.
There are 2 bonus songs, so if the album is intended to end with Curry Chicken, I may have switched up the tracklisting just a bit.
But, there aren't any bad songs from Hazeus View till the end.

IMO, this is the album a young Tical era Method Man might've made
in 2015.

Should I go back and check out the earlier projects? Anybody think
it would take away some of my extreme enjoyment of this album?

This is the best NY hiphop debut album in a long time.
2917300, Check out the 1999 mixtape

I was wondering who did that. This album is official man. I really dig the project as a whole. The only song I don't rock with is the last track and the Action Bronson verse that's on the song before it. He just sounds too much like Ghost for me.
2917421, I had the same exact feeling, bruh

everything right before the end of the album was pretty good to me, but Action Bronson needs to follow his own advice and "Get off The P.P." of Ghost. In fact, when I hear him I know it's him because "it's that dude who sounds like Ghost"

like, sometimes I can tolerate it but when it's SOOOOOOOOOOOO much like that dude I'm like "cmon. why was Guerilla Black roasted and this dude hangs around?"
2917516, I really don't get it man
Posted by 13Rose, Thu Jan-22-15 04:17 PM
Have we come that far that somebody like him gets a pass. I don't think he's malicious with it but it's TOO blatant. I don't remember one line of his because I almost immediately tune out.

But anyway back to dope albums and making wallabees. My physical copy from Amazon just arrived. I'm happy that folks are calling this his major label debut and it's on his label. Still independent for the most part. Great mood throughout the record. So many stand out tracks. I love Big Dusty now that it's on the album. I always preferred Christ Consciousness but now Big Dusty is my joint. I think Black Beetles is my favorite. Or is it Curry Chicken? Such a dope album man.

I listened to the entire album while hiking today and was pretty impressed.

But I think what's missing form his flow is some "jazz" or kick of charisma that would get it over from being *very good* to being great.

But over all I really liked it.

This one's going in the rotation.

Posted by Heinz, Fri Jan-23-15 02:06 PM
He needs to do something different with the sound and make it his own tho or bigger. Like im not that impressed that someone is doings 90s rap. Ye, Hov, Drake and others on top are all backpackers who use that as their foundation and find ways to make their sound bigger. I don't think Joey has it in him tho and he'll just always be doing 90s rap. Which is cool too but people need to stop going nuts like this is anything crazy. Im just saying his ceiling aint as high as people think. *shrugs*

to not hear an artist "water down" themselves by going out of their way to reach out to people who may not even be listening is a refreshing change.

for example, I'm very happy with Lupe's album for a similar reason. it sounds like he made the album he wanted for once. and it's high quality. no record label pressure/interference. that's really what makes these albums good.

I came in thinking that Joey might mess around and "Wale" it up for a full-length but he stayed true, stepped a little outside when he needed.

when Joey wants to go and do that stuff, he will. but because he wants to make an album that sounds like the stuff -he- likes ain't a bad thing.

2917771, yeah this straight up average.

It's what he does to theses beats that is amazing to me. And for all those bitching about his "homage as biting," get off that.

Joey BadA$$ was raised by parents who raised him on Hip-Hop. He's no different than the son of a jazz man whose 14-year-old son goes into playing standards and puts his spin on it although it sounds mad familiar.

Yes, Joey's style IS familiar but still his. The way he's twisting his bars and flows and even can do that crazy shit over less-than-traditional production is what makes him the champ of all champs now. I'm so glad I gave this kid a shot in the 1999 mixtape.

And weird, I loved the Summer Knights mixtape and EP.

bingo.
we're seeing the first artists who actually came out of a life of "hip-hop", rappers giving homage to rappers WE listened to

so it makes me feel someone out there did something right

it's as much a part of the "maturation" story as it is experimenting with different styles

Hope you say this one.

Breathe, little homie.

>and the best rapper ever and shit.
>Saying the new album is for FGBG... (for genius's by
>genius's)

>and this album you can't make it through the first 4 songs
>without stopping it and starting over because you can't
>believe

Relax, bro.

Let me tell you how smart people think:

When we listen to different albums, we think about them
in their own context.

Same thing we do with books. And films. I watch Superhero
movies. I watch documentaries. They are different films,
so I think about them differently, because I have no problem
having two ideas in my head at the same time, two different
sets of criteria in my head at the same time.

So regarding Hip-Hop:

Lupe Fiasco is a 32 y/o man.

Joey Bada$$ can't purchase a beer.

I also heard the Beatles today.

And I listened to Enya.

When I hear these pieces of music, I approach them
differently. I think different things.

So when I'm talking about Joey Bada$$, I'm talking about
someone who has been checking for dude since he was still
in high school, have heard all of his music, have seen
some of the exploration and growth. He's a very, very young
person and rapper.

So when I'm exclaiming about Joey, I'm talking specifically
about how quickly and efficiently his style has evolved and
become a clean, refined sound. Its really quite remarkable.

So yeah, chill the fuck out.

>how incredibly dope it is...

>So my question is..

>which album you like better?

I'm writing a review, but I'm kinda not inclined to share it,
since a lot of you are coming across kinda sad about how
I feel.

>Hope you say this one.

I hope you have a coke and a smile.

Not even worth replying to all that bullshit.

2918955, Since when is asking which album you like better...
Posted by stone_phalanges, Sun Feb-01-15 06:58 AM
...a personal attack? Your response was somewhat abrasive for a simple inoffensive question. Are we no longer allowed to ask people about their music preferences here without offending them and it becoming a treatise on the simplistic state of music criticism?

This place is sort of becoming not fun anymore. Isn't music supposed to be fun, or are we all working here.

2920081, right.

2918360, It exceeded my expectations

He really crafted a great debut. You really get to know Joey on this album. He shows that he can flip shit on different tempos and keep it funky. The 90s stuff is definitely there as I could see videos for some of these songs with the rap city logo on them as they go off to commercial. With that said, it's more than that. I love that he's giving his perspective on this album. There isn't a ton of features on the tracks. You get what you pay for. You like Joey you get to hear Joey.

AND this is on his own label! No major compromise here, straight Pro Era. I love it. I want Joe to get rich off this album and develop that CJ Fly album next.
2919532, Where your review at??

Best selling rap album on the charts!
2919711, Is it even worth it to post album sales anymore.
Posted by muzuabo, Fri Feb-06-15 01:51 PM
Spotify and its counterparts have made album sales almost irrelevant.
2919770, No they haven't.
Posted by SP1200, Fri Feb-06-15 08:35 PM
Means something in this case especially cause this is an independent
album with no pop singles that beat every major label rap album
released that week.
2919035, guess i gotta check this and lupe out
