2910878, It's very good
Posted by mrshow, Mon Dec-01-14 01:36 AM
It's a perfect length, Royce sounds good on every track and the guests verses all fit.
2910881, RE: this is dope
Posted by rmcphedr, Mon Dec-01-14 03:34 AM
apart from a couple of questionable hooks, it's ill. premo sounds revitalised, features are great and royce does royce.

2910890, Great performance from both Royce and Primo
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Mon Dec-01-14 07:49 AM
The feel of this EP is really incredible, AND Killer Mike on a Primo beat? WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
2910924, Mike was not fucking around with that verse, at all.
Posted by astralblak, Mon Dec-01-14 03:04 PM
.
2910936, Mike definitely sounded like he wanted to body a Primo beat
Posted by spirit, Mon Dec-01-14 04:10 PM
That must've been on his bucket list. He murdered it.

2910891, Top 5 rap albums of 2014, IMO
Posted by Ketchums, Mon Dec-01-14 08:23 AM
And even that opinion may rise a little with repeated listens.

Royce just sounds really comfortable and open on all these songs, shows how much he's matured lyrically over the last several years. Premier sounds revitalized too; I think using the Adrian Younge samples didn't only challenge him in a good way, but it also gives the beats a more cinematic feel to them.

But honestly, the most gratifying part of this album to me is seeing all these guest appearances. Not because their verses are the ones that stand out, but because after seeing Royce have so few collaborations on his solo projects, it's dope to see him hold his own along so many rappers I'm rocking with. If I were to make an ideal list of rappers for Royce to rap with, this album already has most of who I would list.
2910893, this is really really fucking good... my expectations were high but damn
Posted by rjc27, Mon Dec-01-14 10:22 AM
like someone mentioned tho, the quality on Jay Elec's verse? He's spitting fire, but damn where did he record this shit? Little distracting... only beef with whole album is that

1 listen and I'll already proclaim it's my fave hiphop album of the year
2910900, Dope!
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Mon Dec-01-14 11:41 AM
Common and Mac were not needed here. Royce bodied this shit and
anybody still sleeping on Mike (Killer) will get their wake up call here.
2910914, I'm so shocked at how dope this is...
Posted by Sleepy, Mon Dec-01-14 01:02 PM
Not to say these cats aren't incredible, but I didn't know how the Younge beats and Royce's verses and Primo's style would mesh. Very rarely does everything line up this well. There's no filler at all here, and the album just goes non-stop.

Just wow...
2910918, very dope.. a few beats have a special herbs vibe to them..

2910923, This is damn good
Posted by astralblak, Mon Dec-01-14 02:56 PM
Common sounded VERY good on "Wishin"

that Jay Elec verse does sound like it was recorded in a bathroom and I still want an album all over again
2910935, just the right length. no filler.

Posted by guru0509, Tue Dec-02-14 10:32 AM
Royce still one of the best doing it though
2911194, i maybe could have done with 1 or 2 more
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Dec-03-14 10:17 PM
But thought the short length was great
2911069, man, that shit with Common? damn.
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Dec-02-14 09:34 PM
Royce was going OFF on those verses

the joint with Schoolboy Q and Killer Mike was dope too
2911075, Royce one of the best in the world at putting words together right now
Posted by High Society, Tue Dec-02-14 10:31 PM
He's always been incredible
and Adrian Younge is becoming a hiphop treasure.
He's basically becoming a new library of samples for producers
looking for sources.

If I had one hesitation about this album it was Primo honestly.

And he came through.

One of the more enjoyable hiphop releases for me this year.
2911094, I'm wearing this album out and it ain't even out yet
Posted by rjc27, Wed Dec-03-14 09:04 AM
I've listened to this shit like 15 times in the past 2 days...

As dope as each song is, the guest spots, primo coming thru big time... Royce really better get his due for this, he is rapping his ass... his second verse on the jay elec track? courtesy? the dwele song? these are epic lyrical performances
2911102, Just mad U Lose is so short
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Dec-03-14 10:21 AM
Almost like the Perverted Monks skit. Dope track that you get just a hit of. I could play that instrumental all day

This project as a whole should dead the 'primo's beats all sound the same' line of thinking that still floats around. Neither he or Royce were effing around on this project. Nas, the bar is set for you homie...

Posted by spenzalii, Tue Dec-16-14 10:39 AM
Admittedly, doing an interview with Premier is going to be hard to focus with all the material he's done, but they were there to promote PRhyme, not do Primo vs. Pete Rock bits. Only 2 things I really gout out of that interview were the My Mind Spray bit from Adrian (which was dope) and Harry Allen is doing a book, which is going to be dope
2912089, This is liquid hot magma

At all! Dude handled that shit and made me wish Com wasn't on the one track.
2912995, Haha - I thought Common's verse was pretty dope.
Posted by Brew, Tue Dec-16-14 12:03 PM
Albeit a totally different rhythm and flow from Royce. But that's a good verse.
2914385, It's def. a dope verse, but I kinda wish it was just Royce
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Dec-24-14 12:23 PM
Just because Royce fucking rips it for the entire track, making Common's verse in the middle almost a distraction. Still a dope track tho...
2914558, I get what you mean.
Posted by Brew, Fri Dec-26-14 08:59 AM
Common's flow is so vastly different and slower-paced than Royce's so I understand wanting it to be a Royce solo. Comm's verse probly would've been better served on another track, we can agree there. But it was definitely a dope verse nonetheless.
2914655, Black Thought was originally supposed to be on the song.
Posted by Ketchums, Sat Dec-27-14 03:40 PM
It was going to be Royce, Common and Black Thought. Black Thought wrote his verse, but only recorded a rough version before being out of commission while dealing with the death of Roots' manager Rich Nichols. I heard the rough version of that verse and it was pretty dope, definitely would've added another flow/texture to the song and makes it a little more even between them. Royce/Primo said BT may end up on a remix of it later.

(Here's an interview that references it: http://rollingout.com/music/royce-da-59-dj-premier-preview-prhyme-album/)
2914725, Yea I saw that interview - will be cool to hear the remix.
Posted by Brew, Mon Dec-29-14 09:38 AM
Too bad the full version couldn't make the album.
2912373, I legit can't stop listening to this album.
Posted by Brew, Fri Dec-12-14 10:52 PM
Long time fucking coming. Both of their best work in years, and that's saying something cause I think Royce has been on a tear since 2008, and Primo has had a lot of high highs.

I love every song but on like my 20th listen now and "You Should Know" is a song I wasn't appreciating as much as I feel like I should've during my early listens. This beat is fire. And Dwele is a welcome addition to any song.
2912377, Yeah
Posted by Ketchums, Fri Dec-12-14 11:51 PM
You Should Know is definitely a grower.

Posted by sectachrome86, Mon Dec-15-14 12:52 PM
On the video series they did with Complex, they mentioned that there may be physical release with bonus tracks on it. I'd rather hold off until that comes out, but I haven't been able to find any other info on it.
2912752, Premier has said it in a few spots... interviews and twitter replies

2914235, Found it
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Dec-23-14 01:33 PM
"Among the standout tracks is “Wishing,” a three-part epic that features Common and, according to Primo and Royce, would’ve also included Black Thought. The Roots rhymer was unable to take part in the recording, despite having sent in a rough demo of his verse, due to the death of The Roots’ manager, Rich Nichols, earlier this year. Both Primo and Royce expressed their understanding of Thought’s bereavement while also indicating that he may wind up on a remix of the powerful track somewhere down the road."

I'll continue to wait for that deluxe version then. Thought would have been ill on that track with Common though.

Definitely my pick for best lyrical performance this year. And the funny thing about that Jay Electronica verse is that it's far from the best verse on the album-that-s how insane Royce's behavior was on this thing.
2914156, Yea Royce didn't waste one single bar.
Posted by Brew, Tue Dec-23-14 08:51 AM
What I love about Royce is what I used to love about Eminem. Not only is the technical ability there in spades but he's got such a twisted, sharp sense of humor and I find myself laughing through half of the shit he says. But it's all focused humor, not just shock-value punchlines. He is so fucking fun to listen to.

The recording is distracting for me. Its like THE only part of the album that sonically sucks and it jars me every time.

Kinda makes me think it's intentional, and unless it's just to promote the mystery of what Jay E is doing with his life, i dont understand why it was left like that.

Goddamn he killed that shit.

Comm kinda went in on this too.

You can tell nobody wanted to get blown off the spot by Royce on this, particularly on a Premier track.

This is a great project, when I can stop listening to 'Black Messiah' at disturbingly habitual levels, I'm glad to have this to slide back into again.

Pete Rock or someone other than Premo.

These beats are blah and totally forgettable.

Royce is a rhyme fucking monster and if it were not for his rhymes I wouldn't even give this jawn a second listen.

I'll be coping the deluxe to give it a better listen. I think I'm one of the few that wasn't blown away by this album.

Kinda like that Doom and Phonte track. With Royce, Doom, and Phonte over a Premo beat, I'd expect to be blown away, but was more like "ok, this is cool."

Both the beats and rhymes didn't really impress me on this album, at least not to the level I was hoping. Not saying it was wack, I guess I was just looking for that feeling "Boom" gave me. But I'm looking forward to revisiting it and giving it a more fair listen.

You can't really do much more than Royce did on this album lyrically. I'd be interested to know a recent lyrical performance this dude *has* been impressed by, if this didn't do it.

And I love the beats too but to each their own there I suppose. Still kinda strange but not as strange as not being impressed by the lyrical performance here. That's nearly impossible to criticize.
2952098, I semi-agree
Posted by Stadium Status, Fri Dec-11-15 08:52 PM
Royce has a really clean flow and some great punchlines + wordplay but he's not interesting enough of a rapper to carry a full album which is why I was happy this had a bunch of guests on it. He's obviously technically sound and always has been but my interest in him fades generally after a song or two.

I actually thought the most underrated part of this album was his sense of humor, i.e. shit like "these rappers kicking knowledge that they got from Toure'", shit talking that comes out of nowhere ("Courtesy" is probably my favorite song because the second verse is hilarious)
2952065, Thought delivers as usual, wow
Posted by sectachrome86, Fri Dec-11-15 01:20 PM
All the new tracks are good. I wonder if it's possible to hack Thought's verse into the original version of Wishin with Common. I don't like Royces verse on Wishin 2 as much and Preems long ass introduction is kinda laborious after you've already heard it once.
2952071, my only beef with this entire album now is that intro

3026798, I'm still discovering lyrical nuances to this day.
Posted by Brew, Wed Sep-09-20 12:46 PM
Just the other day I realized this, from "You Should Know":

"I came out of my momma's womb, with a box cutter
Lyrical spitting image, that mirrors the birth of Slim ..."

In that line he's referencing that his "lyrical birth" mirrors the "birth" of Eminem in that they both started their careers together essentially. But the part I didn't pick up on until just now, almost SIX YEARS LATER, is that the first part of that line is also a reference to this lyric from Eminem's "Any Man":

"I slit her stomach open with a scalpel when she was six months
And said 'I'm ready now, bitch! Ain't you feelin' these kicks, cunt?'"

Royce is a fucking monster, man.

This album still goes super, super hard by the way. My favorite of the 2010s.

I want to love this album but it just falls short for those reasons.

The beats are dope...Royce goes...but I don’t want to hear that many guests on an album let alone a 9 song album.
3026818, Very fair criticisms.
Posted by Brew, Thu Sep-10-20 08:13 PM
The length in a vacuum doesn't bother me at all, I actually appreciate trimming the fat. I always have.

But I can understand wanting to hear more of just Preem and Royce *considering* the length. That I get.

I didn't mind the features, cuz I thought everyone came with it. But as a Royce stan I can't argue with wanting more Royce.

It’s not even like I have complaints with the album.

I like all the features as well.

But I feel like they had the opportunity to put an absolute classic in the hip-hop canon but they fell short and the failing of that in my eyes just can’t not out-weigh the product for whatever reason. Lol

It’s like they had all the skill to win the championship but decided to just go play pick-up at The Y.
3026821, Right I totally hear what you're saying.

I think their approach to this album was what made it work so well (being that I think this came together pretty organically, in that they didn't know where the project/idea would go at first), but also contributed to why it may not be a "classic" in your eyes and the eyes of others.

To me it's a definite classic, but can appreciate your "gripes" (for lack of a better term) and why others would share them.
3026844, To me, it’s easily one of the best albums of the 10s
Posted by DJR, Sat Sep-12-20 07:06 PM
And that’s a post that needs to be made, and if I think of it, I’ll make it soon...both because I want to see what other people got and I want to make myself recall the best of the most recently completed decade. Ask me to reel off the best albums from any year in the 90s, and I’ve got a solid list in 10 seconds....but I gotta think hard about the most recently passed years. And I’m gonna make myself do it, for the brain exercise if nothing else.

But one thing I do know..... Prhyme will easily be on that list. “Dope beats, dope rhymes, what more do y’all want?”(Tay really coined one of the best and most accessible lines in rap history there)
3026845, It wouldn’t sniff my top 10 of the 10’s
