2904417, Any recent examples of a rapper becoming better with age?
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Tue Oct-07-14 01:44 PM
I see posts like this all the time on okp:

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=12605556&mesg_id=12605556&page=#12605753

But I can't think of any of examples of this occurring.

...comes to mind, yeah "Peach Fuzz" was cool and all that, but duke took it to another level when he came back...Pharoahe seems to have gotten better too from the early days of Organized...
2904425, Recent Examples though

Yall naming artists from the 90s.

Did Joey Bada$$ get better with age?
2904427, gotcha...
Posted by spidey, Tue Oct-07-14 02:13 PM
I just don't think there has been enough time to make comparisons, duke is still a youngin...let's see what happens...personally brother is just ok to me....
2904445, good grief.

you serious, bruh?

dude's only been around for like 2 years. he hasn't even dropped a real album yet.

2904453, LOL, naw, I'm not bashing Joey.

I'm just using Joey as an example as someone who is recent.
2904421, Black Thought
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Oct-07-14 01:54 PM
I guess it all depends on when we first hear the MC.

I'm sure Black Thought is a better rapper now than when he was 16.

However we didn't really hear him when he was 16.

He was definitely better on Illadelph than DYWM and Organix so he got better with age.

But one could argue as dope as he is now he was better on Illadelph.

Like I said, all depends on perspective.

2904424, Lil Wayne.

Obviously he's been sucking in his lean and skateboarding years.

But the leaps from his Hot Boys years to Carter III is undeniable.

2904426, just listened to the everything remix...I agree

Most....

That doesn't mean that they can't arc downward after a point.

But if you listen to K Dot pre overly Dedicated and then GKMC or Drake on Comeback Season vs So Far Gone and beyond...

Wayne is another clear example

I feel like e-40 while past his popularity prime continues to impress when he jumps on tunes these days..

Danny Brown (at least to me. He's clearly changed from his Hot Soup days but he's got ability to weave those various styles of his)

E-40 as Double O mentioned is a really good choice. Forty Water is entertaining as hell in his early 40s and I hope he never stops.

Sadat X (to me, I think Dotty X makes the most of his moments and he's got one of the most original rap styles on the planet).

Nas. I think Nas is just as gifted a writer as we'll ever see.

Eminem. While I don't enjoy his music, some of his recent freestyles and one-offs show that he has bars infinite and he's got no reason to try hard anymore considering his fame.

Rockness Monstah...I'm shocked to say that he's bolted past Sean Price as my favorite Brooklyn oldhead.
2904435, Joell Ortiz should get a nod too n/m

2904457, Masta Ace, Sean Price, Roc Marciano...

2904460, those were the exact same 3 that popped in my head too.
Posted by dula dos pistolas, Tue Oct-07-14 03:25 PM
he did say recent tho, so i figured they didn't count.
2904463, Sean Price and Roc Marciano??????

>

Price best material was in the 90s.

I'm not gonna touch on Marciano, that's a whole another post.

"Most (rappers become better with age)

price definitely improved from the heltah skeltah days to his early solo career. he's declined since tho.
2904507, and how

Sean Price was at one point my favorite rapper. Drugs, smoking, age, I dunno what the fuck, he's lost it.

as far as 'recent' rappers idk i'm having a brain fart can't think
2904472, I feel like Styles P as well
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Oct-07-14 04:25 PM
I never really started thinking he was anything really special until his two solo albums in late 2012/early 2013. But I admit I never checked for his solo material before that.

2904723, an actual recent example: Black Milk
Posted by Stevie Lee, Wed Oct-08-14 10:59 PM
He's light years better than when I first heard him on Popular Demand. I'm looking forward to his new album more than anything else this year.

Another somewhat recent one...I was a little disappointed in his album, but Chuck Inglish is a way better rapper now than he was when the Cool Kids first came out. Don't know that I can say the same for Sir Michael Rocks.

edit-
a couple more rapper/producers that came to mind when I realized what those two had in common: Oddisee and Big KRIT

His flow was always cool, but in terms of what he's actually saying in his raps he wasn't great on those early 'Kast records. I think his writing has gotten much much better in recent years. I would argue his writing on his last LP was some of his best of his career.

And I think Black Thought is another guy who keeps getting better and better with every release. undun is some of the best emceeing I've ever heard. Unfortunately he was severely underutilized on Shoot Your Cousin.

...he was great when they started, but as Dre got better, so did he....
