A ballad like "careless whisper" I'm not too sure of - since that was like POP (no rock). I can't see calling Culture Club pop/ballads "yacht rock" if songs that were just "pop" for their era keep being lumped in with "yacht rock".
Wham, Thompson Twins, ABC, Tears for fears and Culture Club etc. weren't nerdy enough to be considered "yacht rock".
I think the "nerdy-ness" and "dull-ness" of the artist/band makes something "yacht rock".
Nerdy and dull and from late 70's to early 80's.

It's a sappy 80's ballad. I may be wrong but to me, the term yacht-rock is used to symbolize the type of coked-out, slick west-coast rock of the late 70's where smooth fusion jazz, R&B/soul, the softest aspect of FM/arena-rock, slight elements of country/roots-rock and expensive LA studio musicians with "jazz-chops" (think the guys in Toto or the types of dudes you'll find on a Steely Dan record) kind of bled together. Basically, individual songs (not necessarily their entire oevres) by Loggins&Messina, Ambrosia, Michael McDonald/Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan (maybe too "edgy" due to the vocals/lyrics), Christopher Cross etc.
Tehn again, I don't really know what it means but I've seen the "show" the term was based on and have a general idea of what it means and that is NOT "Careless whisper" which is more 80's MTV british haircut pop balladery with smooth R&B overtones...

Steely Dan's turning point is Aja, and a lot of their music from 1976-forward tilted more heavily toward jazz than other styles of music. But I think the description you dropped is dead on.
If it sounds like 1979-80 Doobie Brothers, it's yacht rock.
Case in point, even some R&B/funk artists were playing music in that style. Gap Band ("The Way", from GAP BAND III (1980)) and Con Funk Shun ("Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", from FEVER (1983)) come to mind.

i dont know if it does or doesnt, but i know they're both good.
i love me some careless whisper and i love me some yacht rock too. And im not talking 'ironically' love it, i genuinely love all of that soft rock stuff as much as i love my so called 'serious' music...i aint ashamed...

both current pop (102.5 here in sac) and the adult contemporary stations (96.1 and 92.5)--which were THE yacht rock destinations in the 80s. christopher cross ran shit on those stations! (he's considered yacht rock, right?)
so even if it's not considered "yacht rock," i defintely think wham! was aiming for that audience when they made it.
