2897345, Pitchfork top 100 albums of the half decade
Posted by BigReg, Wed Aug-20-14 02:50 PM
http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9465-the-top-100-albums-of-2010-2014/1/

Their 'end of' lists are always a good read since they can't rely on their default snark mode and have to actually justify their choices. The gems are the albums that made it (woah @ Big Boi's Chico Dusty making the cut.

Top 10 below: seems the #1 has fared kinder elsewhere then here.

10: Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel
9: Sun Kill Moon - Benji
8: YEEZUS
7: Tame Impala - Lonerism
6: Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
5: Beach House - Teen Dream
4: Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
3: Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
2: Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid,
1: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2897347, Shouldn't they wait until this year is over?
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Aug-19-14 10:34 AM
People love rushing to make these lists.

They really shouldn't make it until at least 5 years has past like the hall of fame.

Top 10 looks like a bunch of "hey look I'm cool for picking these albums" choices.
2897348, Apparently it's a slow news week

Although thankfully most of the records they've been nuthuggin they left lower on the list (although, will FKA Twigs have made the cut if they mad this a year ago, probably not. And I am a fan)
2897349, if ocean didnt semi-come out
Posted by GumDrops, Tue Aug-19-14 10:40 AM
i do wonder if that album would be where it is...
2897388, probably.

2897389, Am I the only one who liked "Nostalgia Ultra" much better?
Posted by Marbles, Tue Aug-19-14 01:28 PM

I know it's a mixtape and won't count as an official release.

But I was a little disappointed in "Channel Orange" compared to "Nostalgia Ultra."
2897393, RE: Am I the only one who liked "Nostalgia Ultra" much better?
Posted by double 0, Tue Aug-19-14 02:02 PM
imo there are some more palatable "songs" and singles on Nostalgia but CO is more cohesive..

Makes sense.. songs like Novacane are produced by Tricky Stewart, Songs 4 Women was Happy Perez and Swim Good was Midi Mafia..

These dudes make singles.. radio records what have you... so to me they were stronger songs for mass consumption..

2897351, How is Yeezus in the top 10?
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Tue Aug-19-14 10:45 AM
I loved Fiona's album though. Prob won't get another one from her period .
2897352, because kanye.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Tue Aug-19-14 10:53 AM
2897540, the answer
Posted by astralblak, Wed Aug-20-14 02:37 PM
LOL
2897359, Can you name a bigger critically acclaimed album in recent memory
Posted by BigReg, Tue Aug-19-14 11:32 AM
I can only name a handful, and none of them have as big a stature as West; it's a safe choice.

2897390, Critically acclaimed?
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Aug-19-14 01:34 PM
I could've sworn it got a mixed reaction.
2897391, Nah, pretty much all the non-hip-hop, blogs, mags, etc loved it
Posted by BigReg, Tue Aug-19-14 01:39 PM

2897541, holy shit. i did not know Yeezus got so many great reviews
Posted by astralblak, Wed Aug-20-14 02:41 PM

2897368, wow they live on Kanye's dick
Posted by rjc27, Tue Aug-19-14 12:14 PM

@rob_starrk
2897371, they're not as bad as complex (aka the kanye kardashian news network)
Posted by dula dibiasi, Tue Aug-19-14 12:19 PM
2897447, because its that good.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Aug-19-14 11:27 PM
2897372, How is Channel Orange in the top 10?
Posted by Kid Ray, Tue Aug-19-14 12:22 PM
2897542, because a lot of people loved it
Posted by astralblak, Wed Aug-20-14 02:44 PM
didn't he even get a grammy
2897614, Only won cause of the Gay thing
Posted by Kid Ray, Thu Aug-21-14 01:45 AM
If he didn't come out he would haven't gotten that Grammy
2897385, MBDTF had to be #1 nm
Posted by Binlahab, Tue Aug-19-14 01:06 PM

does it really matter?

vote for bin: http://tinyurl.com/qz8zep5
2897387, are the kanye picks THAT unthinkable?
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Tue Aug-19-14 01:17 PM
pitchfork is a hipster/ alt rock magazine.
that means they either like stuff that is super minstrelsy
or super "artistic."

kanye is able to hit both of those marks.
plus he's an auteur... which rock publications dig.

and not only that, MBDTF is a great album.
yeezus is either great or terrible or mediocre or intentionally bad...
but the fact that nobody can really decide makes it qualify as art, i guess.

do ppl dislike the pick because kanye didn't
do it all by himself in the studio? that's pretty rockist.

do ppl dislike the pick because kanye can't rap?
that's a fair point... but he's not being praised for being
a god teir emcee.

he's being praised for making great albums.
which he has done at least once or maybe twice in the past 5 years.
2897395, RE: are the kanye picks THAT unthinkable?
Posted by double 0, Tue Aug-19-14 02:04 PM

Kanye has done more to challenge himself, topics, sounds and ideas than most..

He may not be the best rapper/lyricist but the cat is constantly pushing forward..

2897411, Flockaveli at 47?!? Really? n/m
Posted by phemom, Tue Aug-19-14 04:13 PM
2897417, One of the most influencial rap releases of the decade
Posted by BigReg, Tue Aug-19-14 05:45 PM
if not THEE influential.

While we may argue the quality (lol) it was the first time in awhile you had such a street record released by a major label completely uncompromised; there were no Jeremih duets on that record.

Signaled the rise of Luger and his subsequent clones (Mike Will, etc)

Finally it, along with Ross's BMF, officially killed the classic concept of the regional NY street record...for better or for worse without it there would be no Shmurda "Hot Nigga"
2897419, Agreed but don't forget "No Hands"

2897543, YUP

by the way Mike Will being a Luger clone? don't know if I can roll with that

either way Mike Will better
2897564, Yea, I mean Mike may have evolved from Lex's sound, but Mike
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Aug-20-14 06:19 PM
specializes in more spacey, laid back bouncy tracks, vs those high energy, cinematic type, all heavy bass tracks that Lex had.
2897545, could you elaborate on this?
Posted by southphillyman, Wed Aug-20-14 03:01 PM
> officially killed the
>classic concept of the regional NY street record...for better
>or for worse without it there would be no Shmurda "Hot Nigga"

jahlil beatz (from philly (chester)) made that beat
i'm listening to it right now. this is kind of a classic east coast beat to me
take out the bullhorn and i could see havoc making something similar in the late 90s
2897550, It's def a more NYC sound, but imho it's not hard to see the lineage
Posted by BigReg, Wed Aug-20-14 04:05 PM
yeah the snares are at regular speed and the bass is more boom bap then ominous simple 3 note melodies. But the snares are pushed very high in the mix and the bass + simple orchestral synth line=the glue of the entire song and very much from the modern school of rap production.

Its what happens when Lex Luger trap gets farmed out to Chicago drill (which made it even more sinister and stripped down in line with the nihilistic subject matter) farmed right back to NYC.
2897418, should have been in the top 20/30 at least
Posted by GumDrops, Tue Aug-19-14 05:50 PM
is that YG album in the list? it should be if it isnt...
2897503, yea that and 1017 Thug being ranked over Earl had me questioning
Posted by southphillyman, Wed Aug-20-14 10:49 AM
the list from the gate
2897430, very predictable Top 10, to be honest
Posted by ramaj1, Tue Aug-19-14 08:11 PM

I loved Lonerism, Teen Dream, Channel Orange and GKMC myself but we have more than 5 years left before we start analyzing the 2010's. This list was definitely rushed.

The Kanye West dick riding is expected at this point.
2897433, Yeah. Top 10 outside of Fiona's boring

2897482, Lonerism is the best album in that top ten.
Posted by shockzilla, Wed Aug-20-14 09:23 AM
2897618, alright, yes, halcyon digest is also right up there.
Posted by shockzilla, Thu Aug-21-14 02:58 AM
but deerhunter aren't australian.
2897483, RE: Yeah. Top 10 outside of Fiona's boring
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Wed Aug-20-14 09:30 AM
I dug that Deerhunter and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy too though
2897507, Deerhunter I was VERY surprised with and it's well deserved.
Posted by BigReg, Wed Aug-20-14 11:08 AM
When the dust settles on this whole Pitchforkian/indie phase of rock music history will treat them very kind.

The best 'young' American rock band out there.

agreed
2897616, Deerhunter should be as big as Arcade Fire cause of that album.

Such an underrated album and band.
2897533, Getting old...or preferring old..
Posted by Approaching, Wed Aug-20-14 02:02 PM
Any other aging (late 30s) heads in here like "What?? I only own like three of these 100 (!) albums!"

>4: Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
good album, GREAT in places IMO

>3: Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
never heard, nor do i care to

>2: Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid,
Would def be in my top 10, maybe top 5

>1: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
it's Kanye's best IMO, but I don't play it much nowadays outside a couple of tracks. man, ytfolk really love Ye.
2897561, RE: Besides the list itself, what about how premature it is?

Posted by Madvillain 626, Thu Aug-21-14 12:48 AM
"Expectations" is still my favorite Tame Imapala joint.

I love "I Am a God" and the scale/imagery of the Yeezus tour but that album...is not that great. MBDTF is definitely top 3 of the decade so far.
2897786, So they really doubled down on the Kanye thing huh..
Posted by Stadium Status, Thu Aug-21-14 09:00 PM
10.0 for that seemed excessive at the time. So much hype coming into the album but in hindsight I think it's my least favorite Ye album

I do miss Good Fridays tho

The top of this list isn't surprising given what they've rated highly over the past few years but a lot of it seems overrated

There have been very few "classic" albums but tons of good-great albums

I need to have a sit and listen to that Joanna Newsom joint tho
