but
and you knew there'd be a but
well actually there are a few
the biggest for me has been my biggest complaint about lo throughout - inconsistent mixing. i'm thinking tde laid their hand on the kendrick track because it's the clearest out of the bunch. but it's painful for me to hear all these amazing ideas reduced by shitty mixes.
biggest one for me is bruner's drums. whether recorded or sampled they all sound like shit recorded in his bedroom with a pillow in the kick drum. they could sound so much better and then fit so much better in the mix.
kendricks verse is cool but i coulda done without the snoop and murphy vocals.
if i hear thundercat do that same run again i'm going to poke somebodies eyes out. don't get me wrong it's dope, but he over uses it.
that said he should practically get co credits on this cause he put in work.
but they both suffer (probably just to me) from the same issue around their signatures, and because of the way the album is they stand out so much. lo's timing changes on the hats is just so predictable these days. and because they aren't going anywhere different it just stands out.
these things in essence standout as solos which would be interesting except all of the other texture elements are really holding it together and almost outshine the flourishes.
there's some duds in the middle.
i don't think i'll ever hear edgy music from either one of them, which is probably my biggest problem as a listener not being willing to let that go as the edge is what drew me to them both.
all of that said (and i'll probably say more later) it's a great body of compositions and well deserving of whatever praise it gets.
