2887002, "new" artists that have been around for a long time Posted by SsenepoD, Thu May-29-14 07:14 PM
I hate the terms "mainstream" & "underground", but listening to "U" from Black Milk's Popular Demand today I totally forgot it featured Ty & Kory. The same Ty that went on to be Ty$ aka Ty Dolla $ign of Toot It & Boot It/Paranoid/Or Nah fame.

Most folks that rock w/Ty$ don't remember Ty & Kory.
Also made me think of Miguel, who not only was all over the LA hip-hop scene with folks like Blu/Exile, but had his song "Getcha Hands Up" on 106 & Park. Hell, dude was even on Fatty Koo which few folks remember.

This is most artists though...
as they say "work your whole life to be an overnight celebrity"

2887034, Basically so. I can say the same for 90% of L.A artists, starting with YG Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri May-30-14 03:51 AM
"Toot it and boot it" was getting play in 2009 here.
Trinidad James is one of the few artists who was TRULY unknown even three months before his song blew up.

well...
he only started rapping like 10 months before the song came out sooo..
Pretty sure that song is just a bunch of 4 bar takes just strewn together. Don't think the was writing cohesive verses even yet..

2887097, Yea, maybe not even that long before the song came out Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri May-30-14 04:06 PM
It sounded like all struggle bars to me

He didn't really start making noise and earn the place he has now until the 2010's, but he was on No Limit albums in the early 2000's.

In comparison to that underground Emanon shit and his solo experiments in soul/worldmusic.
Young folks don't even know Cee-Lo could really rap. Never even heard of the Goodie.

2887104, i dunno why Posted by quatto, Fri May-30-14 05:10 PM
but this reminded me that kid rock was nominated for a "best new artist" grammy in 2000.... having signed his first record contract in 1988.

I'd bet a large amount of his fanbase isn't aware of Playaz Circle.
