2884425, Any thoughts on how Dr. Dre is hip hop's first billionaire? Posted by Admbmb, Fri May-09-14 08:09 PM
He sold Beats by Dre to Apple for 3.2 Billion dollars. Damn. I ain't even mad at him. Looks like he more that made up of for Detox. That's even higher than Oprah's $2.9 Billion. Wow.

People wanted "Detox" because Dre has(had?) something musical in him - not because "Detox" was going to increase his riches.

I'm just saying...he's already proven himself musicwise. This is an obvious win for the dude, despite it was embarrassing Detox fell apart.

His stake was 27.5% of the 3.2 Billion ($880,000,000 before capital gains tax), evidently. But his net worth prior to the sale was over 500 million.

but he didn't. i don't know why.

No bitching here. I'm happy for Dre, and I've never used his headphones(I don't have any need for headphones).
Just pointing out why the quality of the headphones is irrelevant. Most of the people buying them are buying them because it's cool.
Just like most people who buy Jordans aren't buying them because they are the best quality sneaker to play basketball in. Most people who buy Jordans don't even hoop, let alone hoop in their Jordans.
Dre was able to make his product cool to have, props to him for that.

Its a dumb argument.. They aren't crap and are fine for 99% of music listeners. Its mainly about the brand but sure you can probably find a different brand if you want to cheaper.
Maybe he should make another 300 dollar pair for nerds who won't listen to mp3s because of quality loss but most regular folks can't fucking tell and they sure as hell are better than ear buds that a lot of folks still use.
|
2884494, well yeah.. Posted by quatto, Sat May-10-14 04:13 PM
but id like to think dr dre has enough pull to at least be involved in the "let me use these to see if it sucks" phase of development. its not like the brand would be less valuable if they made shit that everyone would be interested in.

if this goes through, you can't mention one without the other. apple devices and computers would get better sound with an excellent brand. they may even make it a product for audio files and not just something that looks cool.
plus apple would be able to make money from licensing beats to whomever and at the same time, keep other device makers, like htc from using beats in their products.

2884531, I'm happy for him. For several reasons. Posted by Ketchums, Sun May-11-14 12:02 AM
I know the headphones are a business product, but I'm glad that Dr. Dre was able to make it this far off of something that's actually music-related. It's cool to see him push headphones and sound technology instead of clothing, liquor, random endorsements, etc. (not that anything's wrong with that; get it how you live).
I don't think the headphones have anything to do with Detox. But I think Dr. Dre is doing what many people in his situation would do: just doing what he loves without having to risk anything. I think Dr. Dre just loves making music, so that he's always going to do that - and that to him, there's no need to put it out, because the creation is the fun part, not putting it out and having people weigh it against the legacy he's already built.
Besides, I was counting the other day - Dr. Dre has executive produced or been the primary producer in about 11-13 albums that I heavily enjoy. That's saying a lot. He's already made a lifetime of music for me; I'd love to hear Detox (and I've heard that everything from it sounds great), but I'm not upset that he hasn't put it out. He's earned that right to just record shit without having to release it.

2884591, I had Jay-Z in the '1st Rap Billionaire' pool, musta 'Forgot About Dre' Posted by Bombastic, Sun May-11-14 08:38 PM
Much congratulations to him, crazy to think that he made more money off this deal then he made producing SEVEN classic albums combined (Straight Outta Compton, Eazy-Duz-It, No One Can Do It Better, Efil4zaggin, The Chronic, Doggystyle, 2001).
Been a fan since I was 12 & seeing him with NWA from the top of the 200 level in the Philadelphia Spectrum and again last year from the front row of the balcony at Club Nokia performing with Kendrick while looking on like a proud parent.
Just goes to show that like Quincy Jones told him in the mid-90s when he was considering leaving Death Row once things started going sideways but was worried how giving up his stake in the company might look, 'talent only lasts in this business, wherever you go & whatever you do, you take your talent with you'.
Glad to see that all the money Jerry Heller & Suge Knight jerked him out of came back to him tenfold.
Dude is fully deserving of the 'legend' description.
I know some people seem to feel like this spells doom for 'Detox' every dropping but to me this might actually increase the odds of a new Dre album (I could care less what he calls it, as a listener I'm not married to that album's original concept or to the title which probably feels a bit different to Dre as a man who lost a son to drugs).
To me part of Dre's hesitation was always that he felt the pressure to make sure the album was gonna be a bona fide blockbuster hit before he actually readied it for release.
There was also the worry that he'd be spoiling his own brand that was helping him sell headphones if he had dropped a brick.
There's also the fact that he was probably spending more time out of the studio and more time in a boardroom in recent years as the headphones blew up.
If he's out of all that with the sale and now an active participant in the company in name only, then he might not care about any of those things as much & instead just feel like creating an album that he loves without much regard to whether or not it's a commercial bonanza in an industry that's been on life support for years.
It's funny I'm actually in the midst of the interview process with Beatz By Dre in Santa Monica right now but it's been *slow as fuck*.
This sale stuff breaking last week kinda makes me feel better about that though, the company obviously has a lot bigger fish to fry at the moment then whether or not they're gonna hire yours truly.
That joint would be walking distance from my crib though with a company still on the rise, if I get that gig it would make my decision on where I'm gonna live for awhile a lot easier.

2884688, Apple May Unveil Iovine, Dr. Dre Exec Appointments at June Conference Posted by j0510, Mon May-12-14 07:50 PM

Apple May Unveil Iovine, Dr. Dre Exec Appointments at June Conference By Yinka Adegoke, New York | May 12, 2014 1:41 PM EDT
Apple could unveil Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre as its latest recruits at its Worldwide Developers’ Conference in June, according to people familiar with the Beats Electronics acquisition talks.
Iovine and Dre, co-founders of Beats, are in talks to sell the company for $3.2 billion to the iPhone and iPad maker in a deal which is expected to be announced later this week.
Both are expected to join Apple in yet-to-be confirmed executive roles. One person said Iovine would likely oversee all of Apple’s music strategy and handle relationships with labels and publishers.
Though Apple is the music business’ biggest customer, its relationships with some of the music companies has at times been strained as it has tried to figure out how to cope with dwindling download sales. For example, iTunes executives have suggested that labels provide exclusive albums for downloads ahead of streaming services such as YouTube and Spotify.
Several industry insiders and commentators believe the Beats deal is partly prompted by Apple’s desire to get in to the subscription streaming space as download sales tumbled more than 13% in the first quarter and continued to shrink. Apple’s iTunes Store is the leading digital music store in the United States, with more than 70% of song and album download sales.
This year’s WWDC will take place June 2-6 in San Francisco. The event is usually an opportunity for engineers and app developers to get a first look at new developments for Apple’s operating platforms.
At last year’s conference , CEO Tim Cook unveiled iTunes Radio as part of its iOS 7 operating system launch.
If Dre were to be presented at the WWDC ,it would not be the first time. He has previously appeared at an Apple event; about a decade ago, he appeared by video link at an Apple event to congratulate Steve Jobs on the launch of the iPod and the iTunes store.
For his part, Iovine had a long relationship with Jobs, according to several sources. He had tried unsuccessfully to convince Jobs to launch a music subscription service.
The Apple/Beats deal is expected to take about two months to close, and the company might wait till the closing to unveil the executives as Apple employees.
