2856309, What's The Lesson's take on the Black Hippy crew?
Posted by come on people, Fri Nov-15-13 10:25 AM
Ab-Soul
Jay Rock
Kendrick Lamar
Schoolboy Q

Obvious Kendrick is already a rap superstar. And everyone who hears Ab-Soul is blown away. Schoolboy Q is a little more hood & experimental at the same time. I still gotta hear more of what Jay Rock does.

Who do you think is the best? Do you think they have the potential to be rap's next great collective? Are you anticipating the point at which they link up and release a group album? So far, how do you rank them against other *current* rap collectives (e.g., Slaughterhouse, Odd Future)?
2856311, Some of the few young niccas I check for

Ab-Soul is my fav but I dig the whole crew. Anything they release, I'm getting it. They're doing rap the right way. I don't think the other members of the crew will have anywhere near the success Kendrick has had though.
2856328, Just checked out that Jay Rock album "Follow Me Home" recently
Posted by Oak27, Fri Nov-15-13 11:42 AM
Digged all the piano-heavy, west coast tracks. I'd love to hear them do some more work with a heavier classic west coast sound. Regardless, I love the entire crew and as said above, I'll check out anything they drop.

Kendrick is my favorite. Soul & Q are neck-and-neck. Jay is my least favorite, but he's still good IMO. Great crew.

>Who do you think is the best?

I personally like Kendrick the most so far

>Do you think they have the potential to be rap's next great collective?

"Great" is very subjective but I think they will have a nice run.

>Are you anticipating the point at which they link up and release a
>group album?

No.

>So far, how do you rank them against other *current* rap collectives (e.g., Slaughterhouse, Odd Future)?

I think they definitely hold their own against the the collectives you mentioned. There is room for everybody.

2856338, they're the shit.

kendrick is clearly killing it, and he may even be bettered by ab-soul skill-wise. schoolboy q's done a lot of cool stuff. not as much up on jay rock, to be honest, but i like what i've heard.

they pack quite the punch. i'd certainly be up for a group album.

2856402, My ranking and assesment

2/3.(toss-up) Ab-Soul- top notch rhymes, decent song making

2/3.(toss-up) Schoolboy Q- decent rhymes, top notch song making

2856440, I would like to like Jay Rock more.

favorite crew by far...i'd listen to them in this order, but it's not really knock on any of em:

kendrick
jay rock
q
ab-soul
2856494, ab-soul last, huh?
Posted by shockzilla, Sat Nov-16-13 10:52 AM
2856511, haha
Posted by sndesai1, Sat Nov-16-13 01:43 PM
i've actually listenened to long-term mentality more than anything not gkmc or s80...
and ab-soul's high points are way up there but lately i'm just not in the mood for his music as much as the others
2856519, Recipe and UOENO were dope
Posted by will_5198, Sat Nov-16-13 04:23 PM
but they need to release a group album to get their proper status
2856662, best crew around

Posted by astralblak, Mon Nov-18-13 04:19 PM
on the keyboard, lol. What the hell was i thinking
2856744, If they don't release a group album before Kendrick's next one..
Posted by Original Juice, Mon Nov-18-13 04:06 PM
I will be upset. I've been anticipating this since seeing/hearing video for "Zip That, Chop That." I had previously heard of and heard some music by K. Dot and JayRock.. But it didn't really all come together for me like, "Oh, I gotta check for everything these cats put out" until that video.

Not sure why it hasn't happened yet. Why even call themselves "Black Hippy" in the first place? Just call them TDE, and be done with it.

I'm actually more of a fan of them together than individually. That's the whole appeal of a rap "group".. Group releases with dynamic interaction and a variety of voices/flows/styles.

So yeah.. I'm a fan. Not sure I'm loving the direction of Q's new album, though.. Haven't been too hyped on any of the singles so far. I'm kinda hoping their next round of releases will have less of the trap beats and double-time flows.. though they are good at this, it's not what hooked me in the beginning.
2856750, They need a proper group release.
Posted by phenompyrus, Mon Nov-18-13 04:27 PM
If handled correctly, shit could be epic.
2856797, What was the issue w/ the GQ cover?
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Nov-18-13 10:47 PM
I only heard bits and pieces about it on twitter.
2856798, they basically said they speak so well
Posted by Menphyel7, Mon Nov-18-13 10:56 PM
Look how well train and mannered your catttle is here
2856805, That's a little bit of a stretch...
Posted by Crash85, Tue Nov-19-13 01:03 AM
But yeah, the writer for GQ fucked up... Really disrespected Top Dawg and his label more than anything else... Calling the label a "baby Death Row" and basically calling Top Dawg baby Suge was very disrespectful... Other than that, it was a pretty good article...
2856812, Kendrick is on the pulse now and then its a toss up
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Nov-19-13 02:38 AM
after that. they need to do a whole project together and get it right and tight on a whole. however Kendrick is about that next crazy 2-3 tracks from going to the next for good
2856824, not enough material TOGETHER but when they do
Posted by Heinz, Tue Nov-19-13 07:37 AM
they are always better than everyone else.
