2845367, Cameo is better than Rick James Posted by supablak, Thu Oct-03-13 02:19 PM
Album for Album...

Cameo is more sophisticated, funkier AND had better hits.

Hm, I can see that. I mean, Cameo jams hard.
Cameo funks hard, but I don't know if I'd call em 'better' than Rick James. Rick James seemed like he strived more for 'icon' status or popstar status. Rick James just has a stronger legacy in the mainstream sphere of things. Motown affiliations and getting sampled by MC Hammer help a lot. I don't get that vibe as much with Cameo at all. I don't see the comparison. They seem like they occupied different spheres.

2845503, Larry Blamon couldn't carry RIck James's Blond Wig Posted by mistermaxxx08, Fri Oct-04-13 12:53 AM
turkey you is tripping Rick from Come and Get it through Cold Blooded had the game on Lock.
it took a KFC Bucket band full of Brothers to hang with the Kang of Punk Funk?
Rick's music made MC Hammer a Household name turkey. game ova
Live act Rick tore it up.
Cameo didn't even get their real juice until the Aligator woman era.
they did the electro funk early with "I just want to be" however Rick smoked them cats with ease.
and the Stone City Band was funkier as well.
it took Cameo almost 10 years to hit. and more folks think of Larry Blackmon with High top fade and Cod piece and Word up and maybe Candy.
however Rick James songs still endure and Street Songs alone is looking at you sideways, crossed eyed and crazy, however that is par for the course.
Rick was more versatile and more rounded than Cameo Yo. I love Cameo btw, however Rick was stone cold Funky period.

2845508, Larry Would Have You In RIck's Blond Wig At The Show Tomorrow Posted by supablak, Fri Oct-04-13 02:26 AM
Doing the bird.
Get OUTTA here with that game on lock...schitt. Rick was at his biggest for "Super Freak" "Give It To Me Baby" & "Fire & Desire"
And JUST HOW MANY SONGS THAT NIGGA GOT THAT SOUND JUST LIKE SUPER FREAK?
...I'll wait
http://youtu.be/Fmuxwhl32as (he fooled you with this?)
Meanwhile Cameo expanded on the Kool & the Gang funk sound out the gate... http://youtu.be/Wz13jZaDOPc
Rick's funk was either his ONE GOOD funky idea per album (my personal favorite "Pass The Joint" ONE OF RICK'S BEST) or his LIGHT IN THE ASS & DISCO-Y (see EVERYTHING NOT MARY JANE, BUSTIN' OUT OR YOU & I on the first 2 albums) until he went full on KISSFUNKADELIC on Street Songs.
Rick would never beat Rick doing "Give It To Me Baby" http://youtu.be/Wz13jZaDOPc
It was all down hill for Rick here basically. Three hits later Rick was a jealous piece of toast.
David Lee Roth was better at everything Rick was trying to do all day everyday.
Cameo had a message for Rick http://youtu.be/wXawvAxXrWQ
Cameo continued to flourish and grow their sound and change with the times. http://youtu.be/l78TpOMgq44
Cameo's sound was more influential on west coast synth based g-funk Hip Hop than Rick (Can't Touch This was a FLUKE).
Cameo was also very influential in putting Atlanta on the map, and there sound can still be heard in Outkast, Goodie Mob, Janelle Monet & Organized Noize's sound...among others throughout the years.

turkey i know you didn't hear, Cameo's catelog was for Sale for one million dollars in billboard years ago.
Rick's catelog still generates far more loot.
i didn't even mention cold blooded, 17, ghetto life,
and turkey the throwin down album was the business.
Rick was a Funk star/rock star.
Rick been sampled and looped so much that ACAP gave him that lifetime award back in 04.
Rick inspired alot of acts turkey, Cameo has influence and impact and i give them props for being the only funk band who survived hip hop and new jack swings take over, however they never ran things like Rick, just ask your boy Prince about Rick James?
DJ quik will tell you about Rick James and impact. Rza as well.

Rick was a cartoon R&B star. The mob took whatever money Rick made cause his nose had a problem.
That "Glow" video is the biggest scariest cry for help R&B has ever seen.
Cameo STILL packing shows.

2845574, RE: Cameo is better than Rick James Posted by Strangeways, Fri Oct-04-13 11:05 AM
HECK NO.....cameo fell off and started watering down their funk. Rick and the city band stay HARD and didnt water shit down and i like that. the first two rick james records kills almost anything that cameo ever did.....besides rick james could really sing but larry couldnt....so your assessment is incorrect right off...
|
2845575, You Know Nothing Posted by supablak, Fri Oct-04-13 11:22 AM
Rick fell off harder as Cameo got stronger...what are you talking about?
Rick is an overrated cartoon character. Cameo had harmonies & funkier funk.
s.blak and had 900 songs that sound JUST like Super Freak
|
2845579, cameo records were hit and miss just like the barkays Posted by Strangeways, Fri Oct-04-13 11:29 AM
so what the fuck you talking about? and YOU KNOW NOTHING. At least rick james came back with loosey's rap in 1988 while cameo released pretty girls which was garbage and flopped....go sit the fuck down somewhere....cuz you are an idiot.....loosey's rap stayed number 1 for while in 1988 and it even got more airplay than Prince song "alphabet street" so that shuts your assessment down right there.

2845890, Rick woulda sold his mama 2 a sweatshop 4 Diamonds & Pearls Posted by supablak, Sun Oct-06-13 05:41 AM
Mind you that was after the Batman money too.
LoveSexy would've been "Physical Graffiti" in Rick's "Street Songs plus my other 3 jams" catalogue.
Hell Rick wouldn't have had the vision, the imagination, the creativity nor the discipline to pull off ANY parts of Sign o' the Times the album or the concert .
You was wearing some high water pleather parachute pants from Merry Go Round with leg warmers that smelled like that full ashtray at ya mammy's house...yr beat it jacket with shoulder pads & the sleeves pushed up, an Air Supply t-shirt, fingerless gloves and you always carried drumsticks in your back pocket (though you can't play).
We know you wear thick ass coke bottle glasses & got buck hammer teeth...so there's that.

2845922, time to glace this turkey and wrap this dinner up Fool Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Oct-06-13 12:26 PM
Prince made a good to very good album with Sign o the times, however he didn't have a statement song and Lovesexy almost had that turkey dancing on the street for some clothes.
oh He sold himself out badly for the Batman soundtrack and gave up all his rights.
we don't even talk about his comical overrated Black Album. Rick James never had to Proclaim his Blackness.
and that mess Graffti Bridge aside from a couple of tracks, was a Poor Man's attempt at Quincy Jones' Back on the Block and New Jack Swing.
and Diamonds and Pearls was so corny and Laughable it ain't even funny.
Prince all on Arsenio Hall desperate for a Hit and playing on the Warners parking lot.
turkey had to have Anthony Kedis fly out to Paisley to hear them goofey wack tracks.
RIck did this "Magic Moment" and showed Prince how to do a cover song and also up date your thing.
Prince switched wigs just like you to stay relevent.
and turkey i knows you was walking down the street like you was Bugginout with hand me down No Air Jordans
and you had a Kwame Polka Dot Shirt and with a Turbo S Curl and was auditioning for the Goonies Movies.
your Momma had you take dance lessons and you were the best on your block at doing the "Roger Rabbit" and for Halloween you dressed up like Bugs Bunny with Buck teeths.
Prince fell off Yo, he was doing like 2 soundtracks to hide behind the wackness that came into full view.

Prince took off his wig and was still going to Rick Concerts in 83,etc...

Rick might've been a drugged out hack who wore the dumbest wigs I've ever seen a Black man wear...but that super talented and prolific Prince has just gone and done it now.
I don't blame Rick for letting this come out WAAAAY after Purple Rain...cuz he was clearly making a statement about how much of a THIEF Prince IS!!!!

Prince stole that as well. Prince had his own Wigs on and is a known Jacker and there is a reason why that turkey fell off and never recovered.
Vanity went back to motown and had a little run and was cool with Rick.

horrible Movie and corny Muzak and a waste of a trip to Paris France.
funny thing about Cherry Moon Prince tried to recapture the routine he gave Morris Day and Be Black with it and folks clowned it and Moonwalked from Prince and it nearly burried his career.
RIck James like the rest of us laughed at Cherry Moon for the wrong reasons.
poor Jerome Benton, because a Pre dated "Men on Film" wasn't a good look.
RIck James was a better actor than Prince as well.

listen to the Groove? Prince always stole whatever hot song was happening and made it for his own
Journey "faithfully" Became Purple Rain for Prince
J Geils band "Freeze Frame became Lets go Crazy
Eurhtymics Sweet Dreams became When Doves cry and the violin solo
Kim Carnes Betty Davis eyes and the Police every little thing she does is magic became Little Red Corvette
the Emotions Best of my Love Became I wanna be your lover
the Rolling stones Miss you became Uptown
and i could on and on. Prince ain't done nothing original fool.
Prince even took the frosty hair in the hair from the Straycats for himself and shelia e.
Jam and Lewis were strong with the SOS Band, New Edtio,Alexender o Neal and Cherelle. Gladys Knight and the Pips, however Janet Jackson was the meal ticket. and they fell off 20 years back. and all they songs sounded the same.
Andre Cymone did Great stuff as a Producer with Jody Watley, and he helped Prince a whole lot, however his solo career is about as memorable as Eagle eye cherry.
i dug Jesse Johnson and I loved how he felt about Prince. one of the very few to tell the truth.
anyway Rick still had all of them beat as a Solo Artist so you lost again

Rick ain't took nothing from Johnny Guitar Watson because they both rode off of Sly Stone in different ways.
Rick could write Fool and Produce.
what part of talent you not getting?
marvin gaye and ray parker jr were in awe of RIck's run back in the day and they were cheating off his sheet.

This is simply not true...At all...I won't go into who is better because that's just a cluster fuck...lol
But from 1979's Cameosis to 1985's Single Life, Cameo was the cutting edge in funk alongside Roger/Zapp and Rick...The irony is Cameo proved to be more adept at surviving than a lot of their funk based peers including Rick (who started to fall off after 1983's Cold Blooded....)...it's crazy how Cameo and Zapp proved to be the survivors of that late 70's era when a lot of other bands were forced to completely bite Prince....
By '83 Cameo had already moved on to the new dope ("Alligator Woman" was cutting edge funk....Heavy on synths, a nod to that rockish, black new wave turn by you know who while still HEAVY in the funk...)
"She's Strange," "Single Life," "Hangin Downtown," "Attack Me With Me With Your Love" ect...They all came after 1983...Even when Cameo went "pop" with Word Up in '86 they still kept the funk..."Back And Forth" was THAT shit...
Underrated band to this day and they def. kept the funk alive along with Roger after Rick fell to drugs....

i might not think much of prince's music anymore, but i can't dispute his pressence, however Cameo and Roger were never on Rick James's level.

Not true Maxx....
U know I will agree with u that Rick was doing it from 78 to 83...
But Rick was chasing his tail after '83....Even he said so in interviews...The drugs by then had did a major number on him...He was struggling just to wake up to get to the studio by then, "Glow" and all...

He was doing light bright funk by then, Maxx..."Party All The Time" was cringe worthy....
This is not a debate worth having...Rick was the still the man though for his brief time in the spotlight...I'm pissed that Berry G. doesn't give dude more credit for literally saving Motown...

2845595, Berry knew DeBarge would deliver while Rick snorted it all away Posted by supablak, Fri Oct-04-13 11:55 AM
Berry thought he might be getting another Leon F. Sylvers (another cat who'd blow Rick's lame ass Funk/Disco/Metal tribute act OUT THE WATER!!!!) with DeBarge...but little did he know Rick had set the tone for the young brothers out in Hollywood.
See...Rick was used to kicking it with the whiteboys from the 60's...and really wanted to be is in the black version (small "b") of "KISS"...which is what his whole Conan the Barbarian/Pimp Out Frank Frazetta image was about.
Also Rick claimed "Punk Funk"...but he really meant Disco/Ballad/Funk.

Indeed....this is a different debate...
To me Rick was always the bigger star...Dude was headlining arenas BY HIMSELF....
But the drugs did a number on him...By '83 he was a shell of himself...Meanwhile Cameo had already hit their stride and was three years away from pulling off one of the greatest crossovers in R&B history...
For me it's pretty cut and dry...Rick was the bigger overall star than Cameo in his prime...
But album wise, Cameo had the more consistent run...But again, that's because Rick let his demons get the better of him...

Cameo would smoke Rick like Rick would smoke George Clinton's drawz outta Gene Simmons Demon Boot.
C'mon...I already did the research...y'all go ahead and be honest with the facts.
Who got more jams after jams after jams after jams after jams after jams after jams...
Rick had two lifelines since 1983...Mc Hammer & Dave Chappelle...I NEVER WANT TO HEAR THE 'HITS' from Street Songs again (they got co-opted Kool & the Gang "Celebration" style and leave a really bad taste in my mouth)...Rick got like 1.5/2 more jams on that album.
C'mon...

I think Beyonce is the wrong person to pick on in this argument...As for the stage jab, Beyonce is a lot of things...But her trump card is her live stage show...I'm a Badu STAN...And her studio acumen is a lot more evolved than B's...But on the live stage show tip? B is no chump...
>Cameo would smoke Rick like Rick would smoke George Clinton's >drawz outta Gene Simmons Demon Boot.
It's a band vs. virtually one dude...So I'm not sure that's much a fair fight...
>C'mon...I already did the research...y'all go ahead and be >honest with the facts. > >Who got more jams after jams after jams after jams after jams >after jams after jams... > >Rick had two lifelines since 1983...Mc Hammer & Dave >Chappelle...I NEVER WANT TO HEAR THE 'HITS' from Street Songs >again (they got co-opted Kool & the Gang "Celebration" style >and leave a really bad taste in my mouth)...Rick got like >1.5/2 more jams on that album.
The hits from Street Songs are still classics though....So whether or not u got sick of 'em or they were co-opted means little....They are great songs...I can't front on that bottom line...
But u r right about Hammer and Chappelle giving Rick back his limelight...Dude was known more for his arrests than his music by the 90s...Rick wasn't much thought about until the Chappelle Show.....
All said, I would take Cameo's overall catalogue over Rick's...It's more consistent...And it's more funky...

EWF maybe... Prince maybe if you take the high points. One could argue MJs has more high points but Cameo can even compete there when you take into account the sheer volume of good/great material they've dropped.
Funniest thing I've seen in this thread so far was someone calling their albums "uneven"... This is as wrong as wrong can be. Man Cameo was known for giving you 80-100% playable albums for the longest time. Cameo ain't in the same Universe as no Earth,Wind and Fire. Maurice White will take off his wig and haunt you for that lie Homie.
Verdine will take off his locks and haunt you for that lie Homie.
Cameo got a Good Catelog, however not Great. i dug Cameo and liked quite a bit of their stuff. however nobody is ever going to think of them as Great songwriters.
however man if Steve Harvey has Family Feud and Cedric has who wants to be a Millionaire, then with this comedy splash you gotta get a gig on the Price is right. you funny for this Man.

>EWF maybe... Prince maybe if you take the high points. One >could argue MJs has more high points but Cameo can even >compete there when you take into account the sheer volume of >good/great material they've dropped. > >Funniest thing I've seen in this thread so far was someone >calling their albums "uneven"... This is as wrong as wrong can >be. Man Cameo was known for giving you 80-100% playable albums >for the longest time. Their album tracks are pretty much >unmatched.
Cameo was the shit....But I wouldn't put them on the level of EW&F, P-Funk, Prince, MJ, ect...
To me they made a lot of "good" albums...And when I mean a lot there's a strong string of albums that showed a consistent ability to stay focused...They were on some steady as they go shit...U know u were going to get quality work from them...
But unlike the other names up top Cameo doesn't have the full range of "classic," iconic albums...I pick about two or three "classic" Cameo albums out of their catalogue with the bulk of their other works being very "good"...And that's nothing to be ashamed about...
To me, Cameo's ability to change with the times is their real legacy...They were ultimate survivors....
As for some of this talk about them being an uneven band? That shit is laughable...lol
|
2846501, Cameo in the 80's was better than 90% of other R&B Bands Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 01:36 PM
IMO.
better than the Time, Stone City Band, Bar Kays, Con Funk we Shun,Lakeside,.
now the Gap Band could hang with them, however Cameo was able to surive the wave of New Jack Swing and Hip hop and not get watered down, so i give them dap for that, however they were uneven in terms of making a true Artistic statement because they turned the corner into the 80's with staying funky and yet accessible unlike Earth, Wind and Fire, the COmmodores, and other funk outfits from the 70's that part i give them.
however they didn't exactly write songs that could have bridged that gap of a EWF meets Ohio Players.
cameo was a fun party band and could play, however they didn't balance the two of stronger songwriting.
we loved the Cameo sound and Groove, however it wasn't like they wrote incredible memorable songs either.
we love the rhythm section and the arrangments and grooves, however it wasn't like they were a front to back unstoppable force on wax either.

I'm not putting them ahead of EWF, Prince or MJ either...I'm just saying they in the convo based on volume alone.

2845981, To me... Posted by murph71, Sun Oct-06-13 05:00 PM
There r several debates going on...I can't go into who was better because that would be unfair pitting a solo artist (Rick) against an entire band (Cameo)....Yeah, yeah..Larry was pulling Cameo's strings....And he was the lead songwriter and producer, but he still allowed more input from his bandmates...
And as stated, Rick was the bigger star at his peak...
But when it comes to album runs, that's a different story....
Rick---Good to Great albums:
Come Get It! (with the Stone City Band) (1978) Bustin' Out of L Seven (1979) Street Songs (1981) Throwin' Down (1982) Cold Blooded (1983) (the weakest of the bunch...But the title track is classic shit)...
Cameo--Good to Great albums:
We All Know Who We Are (1980) Secret Omen (1979) Cameosis (1980) Feel Me (1980) Knights of the Sound Table (1981) She's Strange (1984) Single Life (1985) Word Up! (1986)
Cameo had the more consistent album run...
Rick was the bigger star though....

Cameo had about 2-3 strong albums, RIck had 4 and stronger hit songs and also stronger album tracks and prime to prime RIck tore that butt up period.
no nothing hating bunch of turkeys crack me up, Bigger Star? dude this ain't like Lionel RIchie versus Kool and the gang who each crossed over.
this is a R&B Artist against a R&B band where they both were in a segregated era and time and whose funk hit the hardest. James Brown, George Clinton, Little RIchard all spoke of how important Rick's music was and how it broke through,etc.. Cameo never had that kind of "IT" moment unless you say Word up? and that was more because of that song than the actual album
"Aligator Woman" was Cameo's peak and prime album.
they had very good songs, however they never had the big hits RIck had and lets remember Rick stayed R&B with his period.
Blackmon is more remembered for the high top fade and the red cod piece than anything else.
Hammer hit with Rick's stuff because it was top shelf material period.
and Chappelle hit on a aspect of Rick's larger than life persona however again RIck still had the material. nobody goes back on Cameo like that.
Beyonce>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> badu and it ain't close. and I can't even get with Beyonce's solo career too tough, however badu ain't mattered in 13 years and never got any better. Badu can't carry Beyonce's Hot Iron Comb ok?

you are a Rick hater period. Cameo had jams however they had a better album than street songs and they had a album with the depth of come and get it.
being bigger back then meant your songs were hitting and your stage show was tight and not to mention Rick kept it Black and never sold out with it and kept it raw.
Cameo had hits and hit, however they never had that album or that kind of song that hit as big and yet went back into R&B untouched.

to me Rick is, however, the lying turkeys in here saying that cameo made all these great albums and i said so now you saying they made albums as good as earth wind and fire?
ask how i drew that conclusion before you put words in my mouth.
because the way you and Wak are talking about Cameo ya'll essentially saying the were the next baddest R&B band after EWF and made these kind of records.
Rick wasn't as big as EWF,however Street songs had the same Statewide success as "thats the way of the world" and also Super Freak and Lets Groove tonight are all that the White Side of town mainly known by each act and both Rick and Maurice got caught up in trying to duplicate that particular sound with clone songs. difference was that Rick kept it funky on throwin down, while ewf stayed way too polished.
EWF had better albums and bigger hits than Rick, still i dig them both the same in my personal thoughts. because Rick had a run to rival them despite not having nowhere near the cross over love, however his best songs hold up real nicely.

There's no parsing it...Rick is that dude....But there's levels to this...EW&F are on a whole different wave....Rick's run does not rival M. White's and them...At all...
If you like Rick more than EW&F, I dig that...I think that's more understandable...But Rick ran out of steam...And beyond that EW&F were just on a whole different level musically than Rick...
All said, Rick is my dude...But u have to real about this...

i already said that EWF was on a different level with the songwriting and the songs, however it ain't like Rick didn't get a touch of it and that he ain't Hall of Fame worthy. because you can be Great and maybe not the same level, however he is their equal in terms of being a Great and Important Artist who made statement records, songs and tours and he had impact don't get it twisted.

Prince went and got Najee?? HA!HA!HA!HA!HA! Prince gets a horn a section which is as funky as a Dave koz show.
Prince and his sleeping time Horn charts and only Eric Leeds gave him any real horn hits and even then they were sterile and predictable. he ain't never hit hard with his horns. RIck on the other hand tore it up with a big band sound.

i heard Madhouse and thought of a Stacy Keach Narrative was about to come. Eric Leeds is good, however he wasn't a game changer like Danny Lemelle was for Rick James.
when Rick said Blow Danny we grooved to it. like on Dance wit me with Roy Ayers on vibes and Danny blowing.
Prince too scurred and too mentally soft to allow great talent to ever challenge him musically and that is one of the reasons why that turkey fell off so hard and badly as he did.
Eric Leeds was good for Prince, however it was standard. Madhouse was soft and a warm up act for Kenny G and Najee.
Madhouse would be a good Holiday inn warm up act for John Legend.

BEST THING THAT DUDE EVER DID...
he wanted to mock him and piss him off by taking his gear.
He ended up writing his biggest hit trying to be a dick.
I been telling you...it's okay to like cartoons...hell Dennis Rodman was a great defensive basketball player...but what a confused tool.
Rick needed more of a narrative to round out his "act"...cause when it was OVER, it was OVER.
His cavalier attitude got REAL bitter, REAL FAST...and we know that had a lot to do with leaving Motown for Warner Bros.
-smh-
Poor Rick.
Cameo...could've easily tried to push Larry all the way out front and downplay the rest of the group...hell they KINDA DID...but didn't.
But Cameo was a group. They didn't have to rely on one guy.
I'll give Rick props for standing close to his dream...he was around for A LOOOOOOOONG TIME before he hit ANYTHING...but when he did he ran through success so fast so poorly that it's hard to take his highlights seriously.

us who grew up on Soul train remember the Soul train salutes and you know Rick James got one because he turned it out.
Cameo ain't never have no Soul Train tribute.
Rick had that juice fool.
you can name everybody on Solar Records and have half of LA and Minneapolis,Ohio,etc.. and they still had to deal with Rick James.
Rick was the standard back in the day.

2846372, Street songs isn't his best album.... Throwin down is better.. Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Oct-08-13 01:07 AM
first of all Rick was more advanced musically earlier in his career than Prince was.. .. the Great White Cane Project Rick did back in the early 70s Rick already was vocally strong the music he was making was more complete....Prince's early stuff...pre-for you...was cool....but he wasn't as vocally developed as Prince...
|
2846382, Come and get it, Street Songs, throwin down, Bustin out Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 01:32 AM
all can make claims as his best albums/
his stuff with Neil young back in the 60's was on point. White cane was tight.
Rick was just a better well rounded Musical artist than Prince IMO. Rick went through all the red tape with the labels and also he tried different styles and he could play and write in different genres as well.
Rick was scary versatile and yet so soulful.
|
2846384, I disagree. "Standing On The Top" is a jam though. Posted by supablak, Tue Oct-08-13 01:39 AM
the rest of that record is "Super Freak Jr."
Street Songs really was Rick's best work.
In context Rick was 10yrs older than Prince in 1978 when both of them dropped their first solo albums. O.K.
Rick's presence was strong out the gate.
Rick felt more season out the gate cuz he was piggy backing off everybody.
Rick capitalized off of his image blending in with the P-Funk/Kiss vibe of the day.
Prince was fresh out of High School.
It only took Prince 3 yrs to single handedly BLOW RICK OUT THE WATER...however you want to look at it.
Rick was done by '83 though musically anyways.

>he was late 20's when Come and Get it dropped. > >Prince was washed up before he was 30, go figure what went >wrong?
Damn dog...I don't mind the Prince hate...But at least stick with the facts...
Prince was 28 in 1986...
Sign O The Times came in 87...He was 29...
By 1989 (over the age of 30), that washed up artist sold over 5 million copies with that Batman soundtrack....
And then by 1991 dude skated to 5 MILLION in the US along with Diamonds & Pearls....He was damn near 35 years old by then...
U the one that is always talking about popularity and record sales, right? So I'm sure you will follow your own script and admit that Prince was still able to sell records well beyond the age of 30 no matter how you view the art of the music (like you really care about that shit anyway...lol...U over in another thread giving it up for nearly 50 year old R. Kelly making songs about eating pussy like "Cookies")...
Prince was even going platinum while battling Warner Bros. (His uneven Love Symbol album, wack rapper and all, sold over 2 millions copies, equaling Rick's best record sales off of one album--Street Songs...And that's low selling, wack Tony M having era Prince...lol)
Again, you hate Prince...U love Rick...I dig it...
But stick to the facts and don't type out bullshit...

2846491, RE: funny thing turkey, Rick was bumping in his 30's Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 01:11 PM
lovesexy was wood when he was 30. diamonds and pearls was a sell out attempt to stay pop and you know good and well that album and the symbol album combined weren't seeing no street songs.
and Prince was 32/33 not 35.
and Prince created his own grave at warners trying to keep with MJ's deal and Madonna's Prince was his own worst enemy and stuck his foot in his own behind.
SIgn o the the times was out when he was 29 and that was the last album of his that mattered to most.
any turkey could have sold with the batman logo turkey. heck the the Boys could have been on that soundtrack and done 5 million copies, that don't count.
R.kelly is far better arist than Prince and sells and also still has quality records. big difference and Cookie goes with Milk. you lost live with it
Rick hit ALL the way until he was 40 with Lucy's rap and that album went gold.
Prince ain't seeing that at all Homie.

Albums that really matter?....U r stepping on your own talking points, Maxx...Aren't u the one always talking about "show me the record sales"...Aren't u the one always screaming about acts not having any money cuts and not getting on the radio?
Prince was all over the radio and selling albums after the age of 30...So why the change in your thinking?
Really, don't bother...
There's no back and forth on this...No jokes...No one-liners...
U said Prince was washed up by the age of 30...And that's just a lie...
I gave you info...I have no issue with you disliking Prince's music or u thinking that he was overrated...That's your opinion after all...
But again, my issue with you is putting out false info...Prince was selling more records than a lot of our other favorites not named MJ after the age of 30...U talking about Rick going gold on his "Lucy's Rap" single....Five years later, Prince was selling damn near 8 million albums worldwide with just one release (D&P)...
The facts r the facts....Whatever else you have to say about Prince's music itself is not what I'm debating here...
I'm talking about the facts...

2846515, RE: funny thing turkey, Rick was bumping in his 30's Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 02:12 PM
he was washed up and it ain't like what he put out in his 30's was seeing him in his 20's and most folks who either liked him or use to dig him will tell you that he ain't counted since 88. yeah I know what diamonds and pearls sold and that was a fluke because nothing after came close to it.
and it ain't like the cat was aided by having soundtracks cover the bumps along the road of Lovesexy.
Prince was the same age as Rick James when he put out diamonds and pearls and you know good and skippy it wasn't nowhere near the quality or impact of Street songs. Prince didn't do no 8 million stateside. 2-3 million copies tops. and that was a fluke.
the warners brass milked that project and it still didn't do what they put into it.
i wouldn't be surprised if Warner Brothers bought over half them records because Prince was so gimmicky in the 90's at trying to comeback it was a bad joke.

OK...so this is your opinion again...I dig that....I won't debate that...
But what does this have to do with u falsely claiming that Prince was washed up by the age of 30?
>and it ain't like the cat was aided by having soundtracks >cover the bumps along the road of Lovesexy.
We all know why LoveSexy barely went platinum....Nigga naked on the album...One track sequencing all the way through...People needed a break from Prince....And P didn't get that memo...
But to act like dude couldn't sell records without a soundtrack is silly...Hell, Graffiti Bridge was a BOMB of a movie...And he still managed to sell 1-2 million copies off of that...lol
>Prince was the same age as Rick James when he put out diamonds >and pearls and you know good and skippy it wasn't nowhere near >the quality or impact of Street songs. Prince didn't do no 8 >million stateside. 2-3 million copies tops. and that was a >fluke.
Again...I love your hypocrisy...U be BLASTING people on this site for trying to talk about impact and "art"...Now u all about artistic impact????...lol....Man, go somewhere with this fake shit....lol...
And reading is fundamental...PRINCE SOLD 5 MILLION COPIES...Those other few millions were worldwide...HELL, even if u want to say it was just 3 million in the States (and again, he sold over that in the US) that's more than Rick's biggest album, if you want to play that silly game (and I don't)...
If you are going to debate me you got to keep up homie...
>the warners brass milked that project and it still didn't do >what they put into it. > >i wouldn't be surprised if Warner Brothers bought over half >them records because Prince was so gimmicky in the 90's at >trying to comeback it was a bad joke.
This is what u r left with...jokes....
The funny part is Prince sold almost just as many albums in the '90s as Rick James (RIP), and that was considered his "off" decade...
To me it's straight no chaser...Prince sold a lot of music after the age of 30...And he's even had no. 1 albums into his 40's...
No one is asking u to like dude's later work...
But don't lie....

2846652, RE: funny thing turkey, Rick was bumping in his 30's Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 08:58 PM
lovesexy was a wack album that didn't sell stop making things up. aside from Annia Stesia. alot of that album was crap and over Produced and any turkey could have been the featured act on the batman soundtrack and gone multi plaitnum. being Naked on the cover hurt with folks stuck on cosmetics and not the music, bottom line that album was corny and over produced.
graffti bridge back then only went gold and warners probably bought up copies as that fraudulent move he did with "Musicology.
Diamonds and pearls didn't outsell street songs stateside despite having 5 singles released and much money spent on it.
he sold records mainly on the new with Diamonds and Pearls. he however never sold no new real numbers aside from the Hits and B Sides which was split into 3 discs and it sold, however that was retrospective.
his commerical prime and peak was the 80's.

2846668, RE: Ha! Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Oct-08-13 09:51 PM
the music sucked and the cat been on a comeback for 24 years.
Warners probably bought them albums for D&P because he wasn't no big seller in the 90's at all despite all the attempts to get back in the mix.
u full of it as well, however i don't take it personal as you do and i don't need a injection because the diabetic meter is buzzing out of control.

Again, even if I agreed with this ^^^ (and I don't), since when did u care about the quality of music?
On the real...I really do mean it when I say u r on some Tea Party shit...lol..This is basically a debate with u...
Maxx: "Prince was finished by the time he was 30 years old..."
Logic: "But he sold a shit load of albums and had no. 1 albums after he was 30 and gang of sold out tours since then..."
Maxx: "Okay, but Prince's music sucked..."
Logic: "But aren't u the one always talking about record sales, radio hits, and popularity are the only things that matter?"
Maxx: "Okay, but Prince had a lot of help...Warner Bros. make sure he sold albums..."
Logic: "That's the job of a record company, no?"
Maxx: "Okay, Rick James >>>>>"
Logic: "What does Rick have to do with this?"
Maxx: "Because he stole everything from Rick!"
Logic: "Uh huh..."
Maxx: "Prince is still trying to make a comeback!!!"
Logic: "But Prince has had two no. 1 albums, has seen one album sell over two million copies, has two gold albums, a no. 1 tour, and a groundbreaking 21-night UK stand, all since 2004 and has seen his standing as one of the greatest of all time go through the roof..."
Maxx: "Prince is overrated...He used to be somebody, but he was a fluke..."
Logic: "Eh..."

musicology was a fraud sale and you know.
nobody cares about that turkeys albums since 88. yeah like target didn't have lotus flower for like a dollar and that was a 3 disc set? turkey that turkey lost/
folks will always pay to see a oldies but goodies act. no shame in that.
as long as he has a wig on and plays purple rain he will have an audience.
nobody talks about his wack albums excpet the purple diabetics. he has been washed up since 30, nobody rocks his songs or albums like they did in the early 80's stop being in denial and that turkey been on that Elvis in Vegas residency for the longest time.
that turkey went so wack he went by a Symbol to try to make folks forget how far he fell off.
turkey had most of them modern albums bought off, nobody is buying that turkeys albums except the old stuff.

only know these Rick songs
>give it to me baby, super freak,
maybe mary jane if they a stoner
The others you listed like You & I, Cold Blooded, Fire & Desire are known by the same people that know Prince jams like Let's Work, Controversy, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Soft and Wet, Head, Erotic City, Do Me Baby, etc
You setting one crowd for Rick then holding Prince to a totally different standard

This is where I'm at...Rick def. had input from other folks and worked with his band on records...But Cameo, even with Larry leading the way was more of a crew....
I don't think it's fair to compare the two except when it comes to whose music was funkier....

the Wayne Cooper Era and if you use that version of Cameo then I'd say they had a chance at hanging with Rick, however post Coop era, they found a groove and it was tight, however Rick moved me more and there was a reason why he was where he was and why they were where they were.

"Rick moved me more"
And that's all that really matters man... it's how YOU see it. I see it differently but there's not real right answer here. it comes down to taste and what do you value.
For me Rick's window was just too small compared to Cameo's. Truth is Rick only had 5 good years.. Cameo's run was more than double that, twice putting out 2 albums in the same year. And their biggest hits came at the end of their run. Even with Rick's highs there just isn't enough material to put Larry & them behind him.
But that's just my take.. I fully respect yours

78-85 and he still hit until 88.
Cameo wasn't seeing RIck's highest of High for if they were they would have been bigger.
they lasted longer, however they didn't see him at his zenith and they ain't got one song seeing no Super Freak or give it to me baby in terms of that kind of long term impact. most folks in general Pop only know "Word up" and some know Candy. og Cameo heads differ however Larry Blackmon played them cheap in alot of ways IMO

You Headless Douchebag.
All you do is inject your "novelty act" all-stars into every discussion as if they actually mattered.
All that alternate reality bizarro world flashbacks you be having on here...only people that agree with you on any of that schitt is fools that was still peeing in the bed in 1981 (if they were even born), so of course your lil' schtick goes over well with the wikipedians.
Thass why I come in here and put schitt into context.
Rick was Glam R&B...wasn't NOTHING "Punk" about that lite-weight beginner funk. Rick was for people that couldn't handle P-Funk and couldn't get into clubs. Rick was the "Zima" or "wine cooler" of "Funk". Just like R.Kelly is the "4Loko" of what's left of "R&B".
You can't handle it...cause you talk to pictures of these people and they answer you back.
We tolerate you because some of the people here also laugh at retarded people.
I know you aren't retarded. You are another "novelty act" pieced together by a weaker conglomerate of lame entities.
I just like to come in here and use your head like a speed bag from time to time

Rick James was too strong for your lameness and when you was a shorty you tied your Raggedy Andy Doll up and had that Dolll going YO HO!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you had your little play toys as the Stone City Band in the background.
turkey you Madd because there are alot of Rick James and R.Kelly fans who could care less about them corny turkeys you hype up and you got served like a Peach cobbler and served with Whip Cream.
my game is tight and you is some Hollywood Sqaures circle jive turkey trying to play like you is deep. turkey you is quick sand and without my input your thread would be glad bag.
you try way too hard and it backfires.

Nigga you posting in a Pied Pee-Pee mask right now and got so much R. Kelly dick in your mouth on this board on the daily folks be thinking they on a gay message board.
Kellz been around since Aaron Hall fell off and still can't see a lazy nigga with 2 albums.
I know you can't deal with reality, but you'll be alright, dummy.
Then you can come to grips with the FACT that Cameo got more JAMS than Rick.
Prince ran circles around Rick when Rick was a seasoned vet w/ 10 years on him AND cut his career off at the knees (AND ditched the gal he snagged off Rick at the Grammy's when he found out she was a useless cokehead just like Rick).

2847149, Cameo, Prince & D'angelo >>>>>>>>>>Rick, R.Kelly & U Posted by supablak, Thu Oct-10-13 01:44 PM
Truth: Cameo has MORE JAMS than Rick ALL DAY....sorry pal.
Truth: Prince left Rick in the dust in 1980. You and Rick been bitter ever since.
Truth: Rick's 5 Hits can BARELY hang w/ The Time.
Truth: Prince WAS The Time, cause I know that hurts your feelings too.
Truth: Rick James ain't seeing no damn Cameo...he SURE AS HELL AIN'T SEEING NO DAMN PRINCE.
Truth: Cameo ain't a Cameo...Cameo just doing the light work that is Slick Brick & the Stone Titty Bland.
Truth: You can't spell "pretentious" so don't use it, dummy.
Truth: And again...because you keep R.Kelly's nuts on yr chin 24/7 your opinion means zilch.
Truth: R.Kelly could record for another thousand years and still never touch the hem of the mumu D'angelo recorded Brown Sugar in...but he'd probably sniff the workout equipment he was using when dude recorded Voodoo.
Truth: R.Kelly is a joke.

2847667, Take Your "L", maxxx Posted by supablak, Sun Oct-13-13 03:33 PM
I honestly listened to Rick's first 6 albums to verify that I wasn't being a hyperbolic troll like you...sorry, pal...Rick's schitt was HELLA IFFY.
No wonder he was mad at Prince. Just like you mad.
Rick's catalogue is pretty light in the ass album for album.
"Fire It Up" is such a craptastic megadud. "Garden of Love" another megadud full of lame "Doot-Doot-Doot-Doo-Doo" backing vocals and lameness.
No doubt Rick could deliver a HIT, but when it wasn't a HIT (up until "Street Songs") it was FILLER GALORE.
"Throwin' Down"...jeez...there's like 4 variations on "Super Freak" on that bitch.
Rick took his "L" better than you take yours.

Cameo had filler and re threaded cuts left and right, please your selective hearing aid ain't been charged too tough lately.
Come and get it album one is a Classic by RJ
Bustin out on L 7 is very good
Street songs is a Classic
throwin down is a classic for Rick and he had cuts on their turkey.
the only iffy is your wack hating butt posting, ole tired woody wood pecker head jive turkey.
Rick James had better albums and songs period. go back to your nest turkey because you got served in your own thread turkey.
aside from your Purple Diabetics, the non clique ain't trying to pay no attention to your lameness.
