this'll prolly brick but the idea is to respond w/ a label name & under that list albums from the label

ill start w/ some prominent/obvious ones & yall can take it from there if anyone cares
2816941, Blue Note

2817006, gotta love Herbie's run on Blue Note...

from Point of Departure to Speak Like a Child...classics
2817014, Don't forget the Prisoner...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jun-29-13 06:51 PM
It's very overlooked, just like Wayne Shorter's "Schizophrenia" and "Supernova"; it's a sick album IMO...

Anyway, as for more "overlooked"/obscure Blue Note shit (my favorite label too):
Eddie Gale-Black Rhythm Happening
Andrew Hill-just pick one. Seriously, "Andrew!"
Don Cherry-Where Is Brooklyn? (SICK! With Pharoah Sanders)
Sam Rivers-Dimensions and extensions. Obviously, all his albums rule
Grachan Moncur III-Some other stuff ("Evolution" is even better but I think it's generally considered a classic)
Jackie McLean-Demon's dance (Woody Shaw!!!), It's time, Action, Old and New gospel
Cecil Taylor-Conquistador! (possibly my favorite album of all time alongside Sly's "TARGO")
Bobby Hutcherson-Components

Lots of other dope ones as well
2817037, christ im an idiot

point of departure is an andrew hill album

i meant TAKIN OFF smh

I/D, Maiden Voyage $ Speak Like a Child are his untouchable joints to me
2817140, I don't know if you have Spotify or not but if you do...
Posted by The Wordsmith, Sun Jun-30-13 12:10 PM
...do you ever mess with that Blue Note app on there? Man, that alone makes me not want to drop Spotify to mess with Google Music. That app can be overwhelming with the amount of material on it.

not just in Herbie's catalog, but of all time. The concept/execution -- even if I don't think many of the songs in that set are included in the canon aside from "I Have A Dream"

i love Bobby Hutcherson yo
2826202, If you like Hutcherson on that record...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sun Jul-28-13 06:47 AM
...be sure to check out Jackie McLean's "One step beyond" and "Destination out" as well as Grachan Moncur III's "Evolution".

All those records feature Hutcherson alongside mcLean and Moncur and Tony Williams plays drums on two of these ("Destination out!" has Roy Haynes instead which of course is dope as well but a bit more conventional and "steady" rhythmically). Additionally, "Evolution" has Lee Morgan as a bonus. AMAZING albums and they match "Out to lunch!" in vibe (no pun intended); I feel Hutcherson was in a specific zone in those years which you can also hear on his first couple of solo-albums and his stuff with Archie Shepp ("New thing at Newport" and the underrated "On this night"; neither are mongst Shepp's best but still nice partially because of Hutcherson) and Andrew Hill ("Judgement" and "Andrew"-both PERFECT albums!) that he kind of left behind later when he became more conventional and "pretty" in his playing and less jagged and percussive (still dope though, I dig Hutcherson's albums with Harold Land too but his early-mid 60's shit is the best IMO).

Oh yeah, another GREAT record with Hutcherson in that zone: Prince Lasha&Sonny Simmons "Firebirds"; one of my all time favourites and really underrated, had it come out on Blue Note rather than West Coast jazz label Contemporary, "everyone" would talk about it...

2823666, On the low, that might be my favorite *band* of his...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sun Jul-21-13 11:08 AM
The Atlantic-stuff is the most classic of course in terms of amterial and groundbreaking style but the Izenson/Moffett rhythm-section is EASILY the most spontaneous and fluid one he worked with IMO; interplay all over the place even if I sometimes miss Haden's sense of melody and drive in the bass-lines.

Anyway, I love those records as well as the Town Hall concert on ESP with the same line-up but my favorite of all those is a fairly obscure one originally called "An evening with Ornette Coleman" that was originally released on some major label (RCA I think) and then been given cheap, ugly reissues on numerous labels and with different tracklists/song-selections. One entire side is a pretty dull "song" composed by Ornette for a symphony-orchestra but the remaining three sides? SO fucking good!!! I wish more live-material from this band will become released because the small handful of records/material available is just too little.

Not too fond of the (little) studio-material this band did though; I have only ehard the soundtrack to the wacky Chappaqua-movie that wasn't even used! That one doesn't work too well IMO with useless orchestral overdubs(?, maybe they were playing next to an actual orchestra). I don't think I've heard any other studio-material from that particular group ...
2823429, some more favorites
Posted by A Love Supreme, Sat Jul-20-13 11:45 AM
Sonny Rollins - A Night at the Village Vanguard, Vol. 1 & 2
Joe Henderson - Inner Urge
Tony Williams - Life Time
2823434, yes those last two are great
Posted by philpot, Sat Jul-20-13 11:57 AM
i'm kinda a Grant Green stan too, from his early 60's stuff (Green Street is a fave) to his later funk stuff (the live albums from that period are where it's at)

also...Shorter's stuff, Mobley's stuff of course, Bobby Hutcherson, etc etc

Lonnie Smith & Lou Donaldson had some great soul-jazz albums w/ good hard bop elements to them too of course, Turning Point & Alligator Boogaloo are personal faves (Idris is that guy of course when it comes to funky jazz drummers)
2823771, DUKE JORDAN - FLIGHT TO JORDAN

I also picked it up for the same reason (on the cheap) and was pleasantly surprised. Stan Turrentine (a player I'm not usually a fan of) steals the show, though Duke's originals are all great.

2823789, RE: Ike Quebec's run at Blue Note was phenomenal.
Posted by Austin, Sun Jul-21-13 06:38 PM
Kind of like Ben Webster's run right before he died, Ike just mellowed out and started playing these long, gorgeous melodic lines in his solos. A lot of the albums were not meant to be done as all ballads sessions, but ended up that way because Ike was just playing the shit out of everything in that mode. Blue and Sentimental is literally saving the very best for last. As much as he tries to steal the show, Grant Green can't even mess with Ike on that album.

And one more thing, even though it's not a proper album, The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions is essential for providing proof that Ike could cook in those days just as much as anybody. I couldn't find anything on YouTube, but even if it's a two disc set, it's just completely killer all the way through. Highly recommended.

Jimmy Smith-Peter & The Wolf

Frank Zappa-Lumpy Gravy
Cruisin' With Reuben & The Jets-s/t
Velvet Underground & Nico-s/t
Velvet Underground-White Light/White Heat
Phil Woods-Round Trip

this label is a goldmine in general, taylor & thiele as producers for many...
2817040, For some lesser known gems on the label:
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jun-29-13 08:07 PM
(The big ones I guess would be Coltrane, Mingus, Sanders and Oliver Nelson)

Archie Shepp-Everything up until-and including-"the way ahead"; after that he went commercial soul-jazz which is nice too but not as good. I'm partial towards the debut "Four for trane" myself but "Fire music" is the classic I guess... The way aheasd is a banger too...

Marion Brown-Three for shepp. I love this guy and while I don't think this album is as good as his ESP-disk record "Why not" (GREAT record) or even the utterly obscure "Juba-Lee" or his best album "Porto novo" or the ECM record, it's still killer...

Alice Coltrane-Ptah! the el doad. I'm not a big fan of this girl who's jazz was a bit too much on the spiritual hippie side of things, even more so than Pharoah who I'm not a big fan of either even if I dig him. Still, this album is a killer with Joe Henderson, Sanders and Ron Carter. I don't know if it was a fluke or something but it's stellar...

Max Roah-Percussion bittersweet. Eric Dolphy! Abby Lincoln! Booker Little! This album is overshadowed by "we insist!" from the same year but it's just as good IMO even if it may lack the standouts.

All the Sun Ra reissues of obscure self-released records from the early 70's; Nubians from plutonia in particular is a very fun-and accessible!-record...

2817103, Four for Trane is great...
Posted by philpot, Sun Jun-30-13 08:10 AM
i used to have a CD of that Roach album too

some others:

Gabor Szabo - The Sorcerer
Michael White - Land of Spirit & Light
Oliver Nelson - the Blues & the Abstract Truth
Chico Hamilton (Larry Coryell's first jazz date i think) - The Dealer
Dewey Redman - Coincide
Keith Jarrett - Death & the Flower
2817150, 1963 Mingus
Posted by Bumaye, Sun Jun-30-13 01:03 PM
Black Saint & the Sinner Lady
Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
Mingus Plays Piano

You can tell get a great understanding of what Mingus was about musically - what he had done, was doing, and would do - with those three albums in that one year.

Yusef is one of those guys where it's like, if I see an album of his that I don't have, I'm buying it, doesn't matter. I know it's going to be good. It just is.

Most people know AAM from his time in Monk's band, but all of the albums he did as a leader are fucking awesome. Most of them I wouldn't even count as jazz, really. More like "world music" (which is a categorization I hate, but it gets the point across). This two-fer on Prestige is great: http://www.allmusic.com/album/jazz-sounds-of-africa-mw0000023394

Gato Barbieri-Chapter 1:Latin America. KILLER fusion of jazz and argentinian folk music; much better than the "Last tango in apris"-shit that would make him a relative star...

Charlie Haden-the Liberation music orchestra; All-star band and great songs with-again-a world music vibe

Ornette Coleman-Crisis. This live has never been re-released to my knowledge which is strange since it was on impulse and Ornette being a fairly big name. It has him reuniting with Cherry and Haden but Dewy Redman is there too and (somewhat unfortunately), Ornette's kid son on drums. Still, it's dope, one of my top 5 Ornette albums...

Posted by Austin, Sun Jun-30-13 08:58 PM
Do you know that one? Like it? Are you a Bley fan?

I recently found a copy and bought it immediately because I knew it as one of the only ECM albums that still remains unreleased in America (and that's immediately interesting for dorks like me).

I haven't listened to much Bley outside of his early live-recordings with Ornette Coleman and his two albums on ESP ("Barrage" is bland as hellfreebop even if the band is dope outside of the trumpeter, "Closer" was probably his first album in his "mature" style and is really nice). I always wanted to check him out more though.

BTW, have you heard the sole Lowell Davidson album (aslo on ESP)? It's quite avantgarde due to the rhythm-section with Milford Graves and Gary Peacock but Davidson himself is very different from the likes of Cecil Taylor or (early) Don Pullen or Dave Burrell or whatever; his temperament is more like Andrew Hill's. Not sure you'll dig it but give it a shot; it's vERY underrated IMO...

Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Jul-19-13 08:22 PM
It's quite different from his earlier stuff which was first more post-Coleman and then more post-Coltrane. A lot of "modern jazz" in that era followed various general trends even if that aspect manifested itself differently than it does in pop/Hip-Hop/rock/whatever due to the commercial aspect being more-or-less irrelevant (most of those "out"-guys made money on teaching or session-gigs rather than records or even tours/concerts in their own names) and this one seems to me that it's been inspired by the then fresh Chicago-scene with Art Ensemble of Chicago and Anthony Braxton and those guys in the sense that the music has less of a continously driving, agressive "pulse" (which characterized Brown's earlier albums) and instead relied more on "ambience" and percussion as a texture (if even there at all) etc.

He was very early on picking up these things though and did something great with it; he was never really a guy who had an extremely personal sound for the band/backing but rather a dude who was extremely/personal distinct in *himself*, as a musician if that makes sense (IMO of course). Therefore, it doesn't really matter which context you put him in, it always sounds like him and is generally dope with the caveat that there are some obscure german released records with him that I haven't heard and that *might* be kind of obnoxious (I doubt it though).
2823251, definitley reminded me of AEC

the cool thing was in the liners he encouraged musicians to put non-musicians "with a sense of rhythm & melody" on their records

I had taken a chance on Eberhard Weber one year, heading to a Goodwill down in Hermiston, Oregon. Bought it because it was ECM, played it and was completely blown away. I think there's enough good stuff to keep people wanting to hear, and hopefully explore to hear more.

2817022, Tons of good shit on that label but...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jun-29-13 07:18 PM
...a lot of the stuff they put out was reissues of stuff from small european labels (think Albert Ayler, Cecil's "Nefertiti..." etc.).

Anyway, if we ignore that, Cecil Taylor's "Nefertiti" is the big one but if we take stuff that was initially released on the label, I'd go with Cecil there too:SIlent Tongues; a solo piano record that's just dope beyond words.

Also:Noah Howard:the Black Ark. INCREDIBLE album...

This was a dope label and I've heard some rumors that it was Quincy Jones that partially put an end to it by being narrow-minded and assholish at a dinner party...

EDIT:I might mix it up with some other label but I think it was this subsidiary...

lots of those on itunes, haven't checked any out quite yet
2823231, I t think that must be a fake freedom...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Jul-19-13 08:54 PM
The OG freedom was strictly 70's and a primarily reissue sisterlabel to Black Lion-who after Freedom was bought by Arista and then just left for dead-reissued a lot of those records. Iv'e seen a lot of Black Lion reissues of Freedom stuff with ugly covers and questionable mastering.

EDIT:Basically:Freedom_original label. Black Lion=also old label but those records were originally on Freedom. After looking it up on wiki, it turns out that Black Lion *originally* specialized in british jazz whereas Freedom was the US stuff. Because of the Arista-thing, freedom ceased to exist and I guess the rights to those recordings went back to the now active company which is Black Lion. That doesn't explain why a lot of the *original*, non-reissued freedom-stuff remains unissued. Maybe Arista (or whatever majorlabel that owns them now) got the rights to that stuff and it is just rottoing away in the vaults
2823236, Eh...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Jul-19-13 09:10 PM
Forget the post above; after checking this out more on discogs, it turns out that a lot of the freedom-stuff was reissued in Japan (assumedly limited and rare as fuck) with the Freedom-logo.

Whatever, every reissue *I* ever seen of the 70's freedom-shit is on Black Lion or-in extremely rare cases-some other label; the altter presumably if it's a newer reissue (see:Revenants stellar reissue of Cecil's "Nefertiti" from the late 90's or the hipster Noah Howard reissue)...
2823254, seems like the Arista Freedom records...

2823261, What I wrote above is beyond messy...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Jul-19-13 10:04 PM
In case anyone wonder and to clarify myself:

Freedom: dope 70's free-jazz label who primarily reissued-and I guess bought the rights to- obscure or OOP free-jazz albums from the 60's but also dropped some new shit in the same category. Was somewhere along the line bought up by arista and then just dropped and left until I guess the rights for the licenses returned to the OG owner which I guess is...

Black Lion:another label with the same adress/owner/whatever that released stuff that I guess fell outside of the US free jazz Freedom specialized in. Nowadays (?)-and for the past, um, 25 years or so, they have reissued much of the stuff originally on freedom that I assume has fallen out of the hands of Arista with hideous black&white covers and often at budget prices...

I've got a couple handfuls of SE albums that I really like and always keeping my eye out for more when I have the money (because they always seem to cost) but since hearing it I have always liked this particular recording/arrangement of Stanley Cowell's "Abscretions" - big and brassy and so funky besides:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbAJi2aJWH4

There's a solo piano version on Cowell's Musa that I think is better-known via being sampled, but I didn't realize that at first; it's just a stand-out piece... still, it's cool to hear something I was used to as arranged work just as well stripped down - keeping the big rhythms that make it so driving...

When I'm digging for vinyl when I see an album on Inner City, it's instant coppage cause I know it will not be a disappointing album at all, yeah a few albums had some average material on it but overall each album will have at least two or three dope jazz songs on them guaranteed.

I think the first album on Inner City I bought was titled "The Three" with Joe Sample, Ray Brown, & Shelly Manne ( http://www.discogs.com/Joe-Sample-Ray-Brown-Shelly-Manne-The-Three/release/2229406 ), I bought this in the dollar bins, of course me being a fan of Joe Sample I knew it couldn't be bad and I was right, and I've been seeking out anything on this label ever since.

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Jul-01-13 12:34 PM
I knew a ton about diggin' for vinyl and jazz artists and labels but when Discogs started to do other genres of music, finding about labels and jazz artist's collaborations/groups/alias really open my eyes up on a few small/indie jazz labels; cause before I would just hunt down records by musicians I knew from previous records I owned and remember those names when diggin' and if their name is on a record by some artist I've never heard then I would pick it up, but no everyone can or will go that route to find good jazz tunes.

2817394, I mean, I have a pretty large jazz collection.

Outside of all the Miles Davis, you have a healthy dose of Dave Brubeck's discography. Herbie Hancock's time with the label. Ramsey Lewis. A healthy dose of fusion jazz. Duke Ellington.

He only did a few albums for Columbia, but the Bill Evans Album (1970) features Bill's trio of him, Marty Morrell and the severely underrated Eddie Gomez. Bill doubles on acoustic and Fender Rhodes electric piano (it's one of only a handful of album where Bill used the Rhodes for more than just tonal color — he actually plays the heads and some solos on it for this album). He plays a lot of his most popular tunes on it and, over the years, as I've gotten to know Bill's catalogue forwards and back, it strikes as maybe not his best overall album, but definitely his most representative.

Here's 'Waltz for Debby' from the album:

Being a big Bob James fan, when Bob decided to form his own imprint, Columbia Records basically let him do what he was doing with previous labels such as CTI and Kudu but with his direction, so you got some great albums from such artists as:

Mongo Santamaria
Wilbert Longmire
Mark Colby
Richard Tee (who can't sing to save his life but a great guitarist)
Steve Khan
Joanne Brackeen
and of course Bob James himself

A lot of these artists would be featured on each others' releases including artists that Bob has worked with heavily in the pass on CTI & Kudu as well; too bad his label only lasted for four years.

Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Jul-02-13 12:13 AM
I think I got quite a few releases on this label but it's not a whole lot since the label wasn't around for a long time but the jazz music on it was pretty wide from traditional to fusion to disco/funk. Not sure why A&M Records wanted to put only some of thier jazz artists on this label when they still had bigger names signed directly to their label but I guess it was a money issue and not just a genre situation but here's a few artists that came out with albums on this label.

Dave Brubeck
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Thad Jones
Seawind
Neil Larsen

Kind of interesting to see which-if any-records on that groundbreaking, legendary (and vERY freaky and free and, at times, hopelessly dated and "hey, it's the 60's; let's drop out and do acid") label people dig.

The big ones (excluding their rock- and folk-stuff) are obviously Ayler and Sun Ra and perhaps Ornette's "Town hall concert".

For the lesser ones, these are *my* favorites:

New York Art Quartet-s/t
Noah Howard-both, especially "At judson hall"
Marion Brown-Why Not?
Frank Wright-Your Prayer
Lowell Davidson-s/t (as mentioned above)
Steve Lacy-the forest and the zoo
Sonny Simmons-Staying on the watch
Frank Lowe-Black Beings
Ayler, Cherry, Tchicai etc.-New York Eye and ear control soundtrack
2823430, i'm mentioning sun ra anyway
Posted by A Love Supreme, Sat Jul-20-13 11:49 AM
Sun Ra - Nothing Is...
Sun Ra - The Heilocentric Worlds, Vol. 1 & 2
Charles Tyler - Eastern Man Alone
2823441, Actually, the Sun Ra stuff is my favorite on the label too...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Jul-20-13 12:17 PM
...I just feel that that labels entire status as a jazz-label almost solely rest on Ayler and Ra with everything else just kind of being there but a lot of the other stuff is dope too.

I dig that Charles Tyler-record too (his first one on the label as well), my library actually used to have it back in the early 90's which was really cool to hear records like that for free.

BTW, have you seen the vastly expanded reissue of "Nothing is" called College tour 1966" or something? It is SO good...

Barrage is kind of generic and vanilla free jazz but oCloser, he really came into his own, dope

>marzette watts & company

LOVE this one, marzette himself cant play for shit but his ideas and compostions are nice and the band is AMAZING, like dude got the top names in the underground to appear, probably because he owned the hippest loft in that era from what Ive heard...

>bob james - explosions

This one is SO not like his later stuff, LOL. I couldnr get into it honestly but whatever, its interesting I guess,,,

i also ended up getting Giuseppe Logan Quartet (Vietnam was OOS on CD, but i still got the digi for free & replaced it w/ that in my order)

Logan isn't the best player though he makes some cool sounds but imo the songs & supporting cast (Pullen, Gomez, Graves) make it a great listen

they know jazz it seems

in fact, lol, the old ww2 axis countries seem to do well w/ Jazz as Black Saint/Soul Note (which really is a pretty incredible label overall) being Italian & the Japanese jazz scene being as amazing as it's been for decades & decades

but yo, Paul Motian (RIP) is that guy, speaking of Black Saint & ECM...my next amazon purchase has GOT to be his CD boxset on ECM w/ 6 albums priced at $40, ive held off on copping Conception Vessell bc i dont wanna buy it twice...there's a great looking Black Saint set for him too (amongst many other boxes they have for the artists that recorded for them), the Story of Maryam is a GREAT album

A lot of the records on this label were just chaotic allstar-jam sessions to my ears (Shepp's albums are particularly disappointing IMO) but the following ones I dig a lot:

Don Cherry-Mu 1 and 2
Jimmy Lyons-Other Afternoons (possibly my favorite)
Art Ensemble of Chicago-Reese and the smooth ones
Grachan Moncur III-New Africa
Arthur Jones-Africanasia (mandatory for people into "world-music"/spiritual inspired shit), Scorpio
Alan Silva-Seasons (a two and a half hour long triple-album free-jazz symphony with the most OTT ending ever; it's killer up to that though)
Steve lacy-Moon

Tony Williams on drums. Bill Evans (the sax player). It's a good early 80's mainstream bop session. Nothing remarkable, but worth checking out if you see it for cheap.

I want to say there's a John Klemmer session on the label that's worthwhile, though I don't have it.

Album is crazy, considering what JK was doing otherwise at the time. They play a lot of standards and the tunes where it's just John and drums harken back to his Chess/Impulse days when he was playing in that noisier post-Coltrane mode. It's the John Klemmer album to play for people who think he was schmaltzy smooth jazzer.

2873390, Some great records on this label:
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Mon Mar-03-14 04:10 AM
Cecil Taylor-World of Cecil Taylor: Even if you don't like his later, more physical/chaotic music, this one sounds very different and is more like quirky post-bop (still more dissonant than the norm though) with steady drums and all; GREAT album but I'm a stan... Still, I tend to view it as his creative breakthrough in a way for a variety of reasons and unlike his later stuff, it is quite accessible by "objective" standards.

Max Roach-We Insist!: This is the one with Freedom Day and those tunes with his wife Abby Lincoln going at it, classic album.

Booker Little-Out front: GREAT album; this also sounds a bit more like a mid-60's post-bop session on Blue Note several years before they occured. Great, rich arrangements and you get Eric Dolphy as a bonus!

Booker Ervin-That's it!: This is of course the super-bluesy, soulful saxophonist who played with Mingus and here you get Horace Parlan as well for more of that era's Mingus-vibe. very very nice hardbop if you like Ervin's style even if I wouldn't call the music original "groundbreaking" or anything-just dope..
