Why did Geffen decide to not pull the trigger on this project. He had two videos (one for each single). I'm listening to this album now and it's good, the production is real nice with some cool lyrics. I can't see how with a little push this album would have failed. Was it dropping during the jiggy era?

What was the deal? I think this album not dropping really messed up his career. He should be bigger than what he is IMO.

But, I still needed to have a mastered copy of Queens Lounge, Have Fun, Dancing Girl, and some of the other tracks. I had the Mad Scientist and IJUSWANNACHILL singles, so I was good there.

It could've/should've been much bigger, but it is what it is at the end of the day.

Main Source 1st album was a classic. "Fakin' The Funk" was a classic. Then Large Pro made a very strong statement on Tribe's "Keep It Rollin" which had his buzz way up.

The album probably sounds better in retrospect because his post Main Source career is a bit all over the place. But my first listen to the bootleg had me feeling like it was a 3, 3.5 outta 5 at best. Plus it was 2 years too late people were expecting it in '94, the singles dropped maybe late '95, early '96.

There are multiple versions of the bootleg. I'm sure the later versions are stronger than the first bootleg which was probably the real album. The first bootleg I heard was pretty short with only about 13 full songs (no Nas feature), 5 of which were already available on his two singles. I found the first two singles to be really good but maybe a little too old school to connect with the newer rap audience. Geffen's never done a particularly good job of promoting rap artists, so there you have it.

bumping Don Biggavell damn I miss my guy

I liked 1st Class quite a bit. I have the "Main Source" album but have yet to give it a spin. He's a weird case I guess in that he's a well respected producer who made some strong rap classic joints rapping. He held down the first Main Source album mostly dolo so why when his solo shot comes up...no dice?

Illmatic came out in 1994 which was a big look for him on the production side. Main Source came back again without him and put out a single (for their shelved 2nd album) in 1994.
"Mad Scientist" didn't come out until 1996. That same year Nas blows up with his 2nd album and he wasn't involved in it at all.
When you looked at the timeline you can see how Large Professor probably kept his fans waiting too long.

the lp is def a 4/5 imo. dope album

I still contend that he would have been better off if he dropped late 1994 as opposed to his singles dropping in 1996.

I don't feel anything about that really lol, but judging on the hip hop that came out in 94 compared to 96 he probably would have been better off commercially had he released the album in 94. i agree with you

I'm listening to it now and it's pretty good. I think Large Pro has a lane and he stayed in it. Would it have gone platinum probably not but I see this could have been a solid 400,000 records sold album.

and it's arguable that be bested Nas on 1+1 at the peak of his powers, that verse he did was so ill

Nas blacked out on that song and Pro did a nice clean up but that's it.

EP's verse was no clean up, he really took it there in regards to the whole package
Nas' verse always struck me as being too long

I don't think it's better than the Nas contribution. I respect your opinion on it though. Pro is a great producer (except 1 time for yo mind the only song I don't care for on Illmatic).

I too bought a bootleg long time back and have heard the one on spotify too and I felt it was a bit too laidback and the beats-while nice-somewhat uninspired; not as good as I expected. I don't know, I think he would have made a better album in like 93 or so when beats were hyper and less minimalist and repetitive. He was very good with bridges, switchups, filtered basslines, layering etc. and to my memory, most of this record was straight loops. I may be wrong though, I need to play it again. Actually, I prefer some of his later albums.

I loved the "Mad scientist'' 12" though-that's an ill cut, I just wish more songs were on that level...

I just like it more when he had new things coming in during the course of a song in layers as an addition to the main loop like on ''Fakin the funk" or many songs on "Breaking atoms"...

dude is a real mastermind with the beats like that, he did it well on Key To The City I thought

I was one of those who was hyped about Large Professor getting signed to Geffen but I kind of knew it was going to fall thru when I saw how much promotion was done thru the artist's side and not the label.

The Roots, GZA, Killah Priest, & were the the only rap artists on that label at the time and signing Large Professor was like them trying to establish their rap roster but I think the head of the rap department was expecting more from him than what they paid for, cause from listening to the 1st bootleg/leaked version of the album, it was short basic, and nothing was really going to hit high on the charts other than the two 12inches they already released.

I'm not sure if Large Pro wanted to give them any other tunes cause I think the label wanted more features from the artists he has produced for than just him solo; but I also remember talking with a label rep and asked what was the deal on the hold up and two things they said was (1)sample clearances were one of the problems, and the budget already being maxed out, (2) the label wanted him to bring more songs to the table but he didn't want to give them anymore than what he gave them.

Years later yeah the album would get various unofficial releases with bonus tracks but that's after the fact of what was originally was going to be released, personally the album sound kind of dated about two to three years if it did get released in 1997-1998.
