Yeah, song has it all lyrically: flow, coherence, storytelling,
wordplay and the patented Lupe concept flip

I also agree that he's among the most gifted, if not most,

Hook-writing skills are terrible though. He might want to buy hooks from Roscoe Dash or somebody with more talent in that department. His ability to make an album is his biggest weakness all in all. Dude should get Danny Brown or Kendrick to help him pick beats/structure the album. Lupe needs a better team around him if he wants to live up to his potential. Whomever is telling him to do songs with American Idol contestants clearly doesn't understand his strengths and weaknesses.

Career criminal charged in Jonylah Watkins slaying

By Adam Sege, Carlos Sadovi and Dawn Rhodes
Tribune reporters
4:18 p.m. CDT, May 27, 2013

First-degree murder charges have been lodged against a 33-year-old Chatham neighborhood man in the fatal shooting of 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins in March, according to officials.

Koman Willis of the 7800 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue was charged with killing the girl and was also charged with aggravated battery with a firearm for shooting the girl's father on March 11, according to Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Cook County State's Atty. Anita Alvarez.

According to court records, Willis has been arrested 46 times going back to 1996.

He has prior convictions for aggravated assault of a police officer from a 2002 incident in which he was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, a 2007 conviction for drugs for which he was sentenced to one year in prison, and a conviction for a 2005 drug charge for which he received a year in prison. He also was convicted on a 1998 weapons charge for which he received probation, according to court records.

Police had been holding Willis at Area Central police headquarters, sources said.

At a press conference, police superintendent Garry F. McCarthy formally announced the charges and said the charges marked a milestone for the investigators.

"Mr. Willis has been a suspect for a very long time," McCarthy said. "The question was whether or not we could show it in a court of law."

McCarthy said that Willis allegedly shot Jonathan Watkins "in retaliation for a stolen video game system," but would not say why Willis suspected Watkins for the burglary. Watkins is not expected to be charged for any such burglary, McCarthy said.

He also said that Willis turned himself in on Saturday, accompanied by an attorney, but did not give police a statement.

"He knew we were out looking for him," McCarthy said.

Rev. Corey Brooks, who has frequently spoken on behalf of Jonylah's family, said that her parents spent today, Memorial Day, at their daughter's grave site.

"They are very grateful and thankful," Brooks said. "Hopefully they'll be able to put this part behind them and go forward."

Watkins and her father were shot the afternoon of March 11 as they sat in a minivan parked in the South Side's Woodlawn neighborhood, according to police.

Jonylah was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital after the shooting, which happened shortly before 1 p.m. near the intersection of East 65th Street and South Maryland Avenue. She died the following day.

Her 29-year-old father, who was shot multiple times and treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, survived. Police believe he was the shooter's intended target.

Like Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old high school student killed less than two months earlier, Jonylah made national headlines as yet another young victim of gun violence in Chicago.

More than than 500 people were killed in the city last year, the vast majority by gunfire. It was the first time Chicago passed that number since 2008.

And secondly why everybody that get called out for it wanna say, "well can't you just ignore when I said that nice thing about Lupe?"

STFU

LOOK, you want to take a second and be serious about Lupe, because there should be no mistaking what the fuck this motherfucker's career arc has been. EVERY mixtape before food and liq was something to take notice to. Food and Liq comes out and it's everything you want it to be, great guest spots, production from top producers and some unknowns, content not super preachy, but entertaining.

Dude has a good tour, etc.

The Cool was aight, I think he tried to force the concept too hard. Lasers is bullshit and if he didn't lose you as a fan then, THEN YOU ARE NOT BEING OBJECTIVE AND ARE JUST BEING A DICK RIDING FAN.

Food and Liq 2, that hangover from Lasers was rough, but if you give it a listen or listen to a song or two out of context, on a playlist or something comes up on random, you'll be like "woa this is good, what album is this? oh Food and Liq 2?", and if you are like me it becomes a real struggle to appreciate it.

All the rappers I grew up with that had a political edge, never really sounded so preachy or like they were about to cry about the shit. I'm from Chicago so believe me I deal with Lupe cum guzzlers all the time, the fact that he's just become 'Lupe' is like nails on a chalk board to me because I constantly have to deal with people talking about 'Lupe' with no context of who the fuck this motherfucker was. Cuz I have no idea who he is now.

Lupe used to be just a regular dude, that had a gangster rap influence and also rolled in those circles, but was more or less a conscience rapper / nerd rapper from that sphere. Pardon if any of those terms are like nails on a chalkboard to you.

SO FINALLY when I hear a song like "old school love' I'm just kind of like what kind of pussy shit is this? FAMILY BUSINESS IS A MUCH BETTER SONG FIRST OF ALL AND IF YOU ORIGINAL THEN MAKE SOME ORIGINAL SHIT. I DON'T GIVE 2 FUCKS WHO YOU DEDICATED YOUR SHIT TO, BECAUSE IF YOU DEDICATED SOME UNORIGINAL SHIT TO THEM, THEN YOU MIGHT AS WELL SAY FUCK YOU TO THAT PERSON, THIS WAS THE BEST I COULD DO. .99 ON ITUNES.

I mean really, how many times are we gonna get this preamble for Lupe like "Lupe back! No Bullshit!" and then it's all bullshit.

As for Jonylah Forever...I mean I'd be an asshole to talk shit about a song dedicated to a slain infant. Let alone to break it down. Does have bars and is preachy, but isn't uber preachy, but I guess thats the burden one bares when you do something so polarizing. Being from Chicago I've seen and heard about 'violence in Chicago' through a ton of filters, and I think it's just the people that are themselves in spite of the shit around them that are making the best music and most recognized music. Because there's no gimmick there, no like cry for desperation. Lupe doesn't have to cry for desperation when dropping a track like that so its his own agenda. Rappers need to quit dropping songs and goto a soup kitchen or some shit tho.

I guess I could have just typed this

I mean really, how many times are we gonna get this preamble for Lupe like "Lupe back! No Bullshit!" and then it's all bullshit.
2862890, He might be better off as a battle rapper

2862891, You could have just commented on the actual song, you imbecile.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Dec-23-13 03:58 PM

But you won't, because you don't listen to music.

You're just mad, probably because you're you're not getting
the manpurse you wanted for Christmas

Or because Lupe farted in your dinner

and to be thorough...

really though, no reason to hard body defend Lupe Fiasco. Theres no doubt he's got skill, I think there was a wave he created that he just flat out ignored and as a fan that shit felt like a slap in the face. Like as though execs said, theres no changing you, but make your message broader and broader and broader, til it's fairly diluted. So when he goes back to being political like this, pardon me if I gotta look at who this dude has been. Context provides a much more insightful appreciation. There's enough puff pieces written about these dudes, if people are just going to non objectively jock, who has time for that? I feel like half this thread was policing who said what about Jonylah anyway.

2862895, Bwahahahah you never listened to the song, dumbass

what?

I listened to the song. The youtube page has a picture of Jonylah throughout. The act of making the song and putting her picture up, that is certainly a move, if not political. I feel like the terms socially conscious/political go hand in hand. I don't get what you are trying to do, but it's certainly not have a discussion.

You ever heard Song for Assata? Is that not a political song to you? The reason why all the balls of that song were clipped is because of who Common became after the fact. Like how does one go from Song for Assata to name checking Ryan Phillipe and Resse Witherspoon, SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGIVE. but I digress.

I get that the word political can be divisive, but it certainly doesn't mean you gotta be on some nationalistic shit in your content. I believe Lupe's message is getting at; imagine the days of this girl's life had she been given a chance to live it, or the system is so fucked that this girl wasn't able to do A, B, C. Def separated from some "Fuck Rahm, fuck Chicago, yada yada" It's more or less about life. With the Jonylah song Lupe took a stance, with the rollout of that girls picture, that is being provocative without the sexiness associated with the word provocative.

So if speaking on social injustice doesn't go hand in hand with being political or if that's funny to you, I dunno if you can handle this discussion fam. The only thing aside from this song being, just fine, nothing really special, is that at least Lupe's preachy framework makes this palatable and at least he hasn't necessarily sold out despite diluting his initial philosophies as an MC.
2862901, Wow, I actually feel bad for you
Posted by amplifya7, Mon Dec-23-13 05:15 PM
An artist completely nullifies an entire body of work that you loved because they've made pop-pandering music afterwards? You can never enjoy ANYTHING by them before or after ever again? That counts out Lupe and Common, along with Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye, Ice Cube, Big KRIT, practically every rapper signed to a major label in the past 20 years
2862904, RE: Wow, I actually feel bad for you

Pretty much. Stick to your guns. Objectively, fun music is fun music, but I mean if you want me to really put you into consideration, is it just that you take yourself seriously until you reach an apex of success?

2862916, I mean I feel like that idea could be a thread in and of itself

isn't that where we all usually fall out of love with rappers as artists? That's certainly where they are most vulnerable for critique.

I mean in that post I'm not like where the fuck is the next skate song from Lupe lol. And I've tried to stay as objective as I can here. Common has made egregious assaults against who he once was just because he got a SAG card. EGREGIOUS. point blank.

You see posts in the lesson all the time about how Kweli should just hang it up, but he's been the same rapper for years, and that's been his problem, so sticking to your guns fails from time to time if you can't reinvent yourself properly. I don't have a problem with reinvention as long as it's not overt pop pandering. Kanye West and Jay-z were always pop pandering, so nothing is new in that core philosophy, they are who they are. When someone like Common or Lupe does a 180, how can I not take notice if they have strayed, I'm only listening to motherfuckers for what they have to say an how they say it in the first place. Fuck I mean Pac pop-pandered/ contradicted himself, but he and a host of artists have done it way better than how artists are doing it today.

Maybe the last 10 years of pop culture is just too cringe worthy for me. Like the fuck I want rappers talking about reality tv for? or two actors that nobody will give a shit about when it's all said and done?

Like none of this is deathly serious, but this is my problem with the state of hip hop in the last 10 years, all the dudes that said you can't fake it when I was growing up, I believed them. And constantly I was reminded that that was my bad and motherfuckers will change at the drop of a dime for some dough, I mean its sad to me and it should be sad to all of you, not that people change, but that their forced to dilute their own voice to be heard.
2862903, My bad, you're in 7th grade.

2862899, I like the song, and I think Lupe has had a good year.

Between Jonylah Forever, SLR 2, SLR 3, his verse on Wale's Poor Decisions, and Animal Pharm (though not as much as the others), Lupe has had some of my favorite verses of the year. All of those verses showcase different parts of his skill set, too.

Old School Love is sort of blah, though. It's solid, but I haven't felt a need to listen to it since my first time hearing it. I'm looking forward to the album, but treading cautiously.
