what does the Booming System (performed by LL Cool J and produced by Marley Marl) have to do with this conversation about EPMD?

I guess I'm too young to enjoy Whodini, I don't see the appeal there at all.

Whodini did some cool songs but I must admit I find their style a bit lightweight and overtly "pop" compared wtih what Run DMC and LL and others would do slightly afterwards...

I don't think EPMD had 8 bad songs in their catalog

there are groups that do music in a certain style, no matter the genre, but EPMD are what Hip Hop is all about in its purest form
nobody can fill their slot, they don't have any real disciples to pass the baton to because they were so pioneering with their style, but they had such a wide influence that reached all over the map
basically if you have a ten group all-time list and EPMD isn't in it, your list is fuckery no matter who else is on it

plus, the Hit Squad? they pretty much formed the template for hip hop groups/posses/crews.

Yup, and I have often made the case for EPMD's absence from these "lists", countdowns, etc. as great examples of how the most uninformed people make decisions based on hip hop in the media. I'd argue for Whodini in the same case, but as far as EPMD, they gave life support to the underground for years while still going gold and platinum. They rivaled and influenced everyone from PE to NWA to LL to Tribe, etc.

I think that in a large capacity, the way rap music is viewed post-Tribe centers on the sex appeal of the group (a reason why i think De La is getting forgotten) and then post-Illmatic centers on artists with a certain kinda melodrama that justifies its art due to their "stories" (ie: Biggie, Pac, Jay, Nas).

EPMD made JAMS -- kept it street, funky, credible, and exciting.

Completely different. And it might be weird because I'm young as hell picking Whodini, but they made some of my favorite Rap ever. I feel like the production on "Friends" is like Top 25 worthy. "Five minutes of funk" is one of my Top 3 80's Rap songs, and I like it more than anything EPMD did. "One love" is >>>>>.

I will say EMPD's full albums were better, but I also feel like most early rappers struggled when it came to making full albums that were great. It was always some classic singles, above average album cut or two, and then wack filler. But for Whodini, I feel their standout songs kill EPMD's standouts, just in a whole different way.

Whodini came from the albumless era, and their first three albums are excellent anyhow

I got my 11 year old nephew to become a Whodini fan. He loves Funky Beat, I mean he asks me to throw it on now.

their era was still making music in the late 90's, while plenty folks who started with EPMD still were. It's unfair to compare the two because of that, to me.

EMPD was came back and was still good...whodini cane back and was awful

was able to come back or to stay around. Even those who could actually Rap good just couldn't make relevant music...the music had changed waaaaay way too much.

So there is going to be an overwhelming bias towards EPMD.
EPMD's music seems to have a certain air of timelessness to me, but it could have a lot to do with the era I grew up in. Damn near every rapper that dropped an album before 1987 had a certain corniness to them that I found slightly off-putting. The music was somewhat entertaining but I never had an ounce of admiration for any of them. Then Rakim/KRS/Kane/Chill Rob G/Ultramag/EPMD/De La/Nice & Smooth/Public Enemy/3XDope popped and I was all in.

to prefer the mid 80's Rap, even the "corny" type shit, more than the 87-91 era that you mentioned, or at least certain artists.

I don't know...the production is the main thing we prefer, more so than the raps. Rakim is one of my favs for sure. Tribe is my favorite group. But when it came to production, the minimalist, drums only, or either slight funk based sound always appealed to me the most. I can see it being a Regional preference, even though all of this music came from the East.

I played Schoolly D "PSK what does it mean" for my two homies, 27 and 22 from here, and they'd never heard it...but were amazed and loved it. So I think that sound just hits some of us the hardest, more than Chill Rob, Ultramag, early-early De La, P.E., Bomb Squad, and a lot of that. It could be because the West Coast artists followed that sound more....PSK = 6 in the morning, and arguably "Boyz in da hood" too.
