No "substantive article" on drones is worth a damn, like,
at all. The academics, former intelligence officers,
diplomats, and legal scholars have beaten it to absolute
death. Not dissimilar to Abu Ghraib or Gitmo. Lupe very well
may write on the issue (and good for him if he does), but the
drone issue needs more than op-eds read and written by the
same people.

Ironically, what the anti-drone movement specifically
lacks is public disobedience, youthful exuberance, grassroots
activism and anger emanating from young Americans and
other members of Obama's core constituency.

Black Americans, for example, are dead silent on drones,
because we're still in the "don't criticize the president"
phase (and will probably be there for the remainder of
BHO's presidency)

Lupe is one of the few celebrity progressives who has been
consistent in his critiques of BHO. If you read them, they
are actually quite sound and date back to the democratic primary.

As for utility and effectiveness: when you've solved the
question about "what works" in terms of activism, you'll have
solved a question that's thousands of years old. Nobody really
knows "what works." Public disobedience often does work.
Sometimes journalism works. Sometimes working through the
legal system works.

Apparently the Lesson has transformed into an activist-scholar
think tank, who knows how to effectively address the drone
warfare issue.

Lupe took the stance of being a popular rapper, and so he'd use
his fame to bring attention to the issue in a setting that would
surprise and unnerve people (which is exactly what civil
disobedience has aimed to do for thousands of years).

His actions actually make perfect sense.

The problem is, The Lesson doesn't like Lupe for some magical,
make-believe reasons. And you'll invent even more magical,
make-believe reasons to criticize him. Its stupid and the Lesson
should be ashamed of itself.

My interpretation of the incident:

Lupe played the same song for 30 minutes until the venue kicked him off stage, and then falsely blamed the incident on his *radical* politics. Furthermore, he (meaning Atlantic) sent out press statements, which insinuated that he was forced off the stage by secret service (obviously untrue)... All of this to build some kind of hype or (what I assume Atlantic believes to be what listeners call) "credibility."

That's all probably true. Lupe probably is passionate about his politics and him and his label use that as his "angle to sell", if nothing else. I dunno. If, it terms of mainstream hip hop, it's this or 2 Chainz, Drake, etc, I think I would go with Lupe. At the very least, there's some passion and substance.

I wish the music matched the man because if it did he'd be one of the great rappers of our generation. For me at least, his output has just been too inconsistent and downright awful even at times. Nonetheless, I applaud him for saying the things that need to be said - that Obama truthfully hasn't been that great and that war is disgusting.

That song that he was singing - Words I Never Said - is fucking fire. I haven't heard rappers or musicians in general (other than honkeys) talking about this shit since...oh I don't know...maybe Immortal Technique in 2003? Maybe some of Prodigy's more recent shit? But damn, man, it's good to hear some music on a subject where you can tell the artist is pissed as hell and trying to get his point across.

Unfortunately this is like the perfect storm of OkayPlayer agendas - anti-Lupe and pro-Obama. Can't praise Lupe, and can't criticize the lord and savior of all non-islamic brown people.

...feels disturbed about the severe challenges facing the community he grew up in and america's self-destructive/hyper-offensive domestic and foreign policies. i'm glad he uses his music and media appearances to express dissent. i like obama generally, but his administration's policies do extend cheney's vision of dystopia. it's caused death and danger without accountability, and it undermines a lot of the liberties that generations before ours worked to achieve, and i think these issues deserve some public discourse.

so he temporarily hijacked an event...is that such a terrible thing? it may have been 'inappropriate', but whatever, he got to speak his mind. they got him off stage so it's not like he ruined the whole event. maybe he got one person to actually consider what he was saying, which i'm sure is worth it to him. was all this just to garner attention to himself? ionno lupe to personally say he would do that, but i hope not.

now if he can just be more consistent with reconciling quality music and constructive messages on the next album, that'd be great.

And I say that as an Obama supporter.

And its probably not quite as "inappropriate"
as Guantanamo or drone strikes.
