this is big (to me). the guy has only released a handful of tracks but most of them are perfect (see: 'grimelight' + 'untitled'). additionally, the fact that this mix exists would seem to indicate that he has some new material forthcoming, which is also excellent

Redshape - Square - last year but just getting around to it.

I've been in this fog from being busy the past few months, not as sensitive to music or art in general as I usually am. This is good enough to cut through that, though --- solid techno album, although with that said a lot of it is more "album" than "dance music," not a collection of singles but a good listen.

Switches b/t ambient-ish interludes and longer tracks, not too lengthy overall --- individual tracks are dynamic, varied in mood/textures. The best moments are in the emotional space between subtle-funk & sci-fi-spiritual-pathos owned by good techno.

Possible high points: "Atlantic" is fairly literal, like standing on the shore listening to seagulls - keyboards breathing deeply, phasing percussion. "Enter the Volt" lots of space, floating around, sounds dealt all around the stereo spectrum (or panning through them), bouncing snippets of moody dialogue. The last track, "Playground," reminds me a little of Red Planet/Martian stuff, though I may be influenced by the common use of the word "Red".

And then a contribution from Space Ape that I don't like, not the lyrics or the vocal performance. Trying to be versatile but too far into corny here --- the main flaw, glaring though it may be.

Posted by bearfield, Sun Feb-17-13 05:35 PM
technically from late 2012 but i didn't see any discussion on it so i'm posting it here

it's an intriguing listen for sure, in the mold of the actress/andy stott/manchester steez, i.e., smudged, almost decaying sounds that occasionally obscure the often simple melodies. vessel's work, however has a bit of "sickly sweet" to it a la instra:mental's "resolution 653" (and i'm sure countless other works before "resolution 653"). the end result is like a hazy, somewhat unsettling and sometimes jarring fog that eventually dissipates just enough to reveal a beautiful bittersweet melody before reforming back into a confusing mist

great stuff. highly recommended

with Diversions 1994-1996 and Dutch Tvashar Plumes.

Both are within the Ambient Techno realm and are easy to get lost in. The former is more 'experimental' while also dabbling in DnB/Jungle rhythms. Neither record is covering any new territory, but both are enjoyable.

is it only interesting if you know that he culled his samples from old dnb tapes? i think a lot of why i enjoyed 'diversions' was that feeling of hazy recognition; not really being able to exactly place where i'd heard sample x before but knowing that i had heard it on some ancient dnb track
2817302, this question remains unanswered

i still don't know if i would enjoy this if i didn't recognize the samples. i like this album quite a bit. it gets better with each listen

But I also think that it's pointless to try to strip context from the way we enjoy music. So if you only enjoy it because of familiarity, or the novelty of the technique, I don't think that should make you question the experience.

I picked up the Dutch Plumes album and like it better than Diversions, actually. Put my headphones in and took a walk listening to that on a stormy night and it was awesome.

i threw it in http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2639179&mesg_id=2639179&page= because burial is one of the half dozen or so electronic musicians who can carry an OKP thread on his own even if not for every single release

2788711, Depeche Mode's Delta Machine streaming on iTunes
Posted by 2Future4U, Wed Mar-20-13 12:47 AM
An impressive showing from the boys from Basildon. Ben Hillier's last offering in his trilogy of Depeche Mode albums gives alot of evidence supporting the claim of the often heard saying, "Third time's a charm". Delta Machine is Depeche Mode at their hardest and most experimental at the same time.
The production is dark and brooding, a DM trademark, yet this time around they throw to the wayside any conceived notion of emulating Violator and reach for a futuristic take of the sonic landscapes they had carved out between Construction Time Again and Black Celebration. The sounds are harsh and aggressive, laying down a foundation for Martin Gore and Dave Gahan to showcase their songwriting abilities in ways that I haven't heard since Ultra.

"Trips" & "Friends Die" caught my attention, the rest was just too over-produced for me; he uses a lot of vocals then chops, tweeks, put them at different pitches & octaves to make a melody of percussion but goes a little overboard at times which the sounds becomes more annoying than harmonic.

Posted by ajiav, Tue Mar-26-13 08:56 PM
Enjoying Dadub - You Are Eternity after coming across it on the various online shops, later noticing that textura, quietus, etc. had given it good marks. Again more of an album-length work than singles, but I enjoy hearing something with dub influences that doesn't completely follow the predominant cliches of dub techno, etc. I'm always a fan of snippets of dialogue, worked in to effect --- e.g. Greenspan's (i think) comments on the fallibility of his beliefs add a political dimension which I like the idea of. The praise being afforded this makes it kind of an obvious choice, but I like it none-the-less.

I don't know how to feel about the album as a whole yet, but "Gone Feral" into the title track is an incredible one-two punch. The title track is insanely awesome.

Second half of the album feels stronger so far.

Recommended for anybody feeling that Jon Hopkins album as I find their sounds somewhat similar. But Holden has changed it up a lot here.

http://ripl.bandcamp.com/album/simulations-vol-1-ep-cracked-vessels-joyful-disposition

Hugo Sonia, born 1980, is a composer who spent the last decade writing ‘library’-music for film and TV, but to this day hasn’t released a sound carrier under his own name. His Debut EP Simulations Vol. 1 is the first in a series. Here’s a portion of the story as told by Dim Grimm.

About once a year I get together with my old kindergarden pal for dinner. He owns this rather large TV set, which usually remains switched on while we eat and talk. Whenever I do get to be near one of these old info slings, I tend to soak up every detail in awe, especially the commercials. This time wasn’t any different. One eye and ear on the volcano documentary that was on, chewing on a delicious piece of the rabbit my friend usually cooks at these get-togethers, I suddenly noticed a gorgeous portion of music playing in the background of these monumental images of erupting lava. The score reminded me of a digital Hans-Joachim Rödelius / Edward Williams-cross, a bit pompous, to a still pleasant degree, at the same time sparse, faintly dissonant and supported by a repetitive and gloriously shaky, rumbling rhythm section. Discovering music in this fashion makes me feel giddy, and when the credits rolled, I wrote down the name of the woman responsible for the soundtrack.

Back home, doing the Google hunt, it turned out difficult to find any information about the lady, except for one or two listings on IMDB. I nearly gave it a rest, trying to be content with having had the rare pleasure of filling my belly with tender rabbit. Luckily the next day, I decided to write an e-mail to the production company of the documentary; the answer came surprisingly quick, but it contained nothing but Hugo Sonia’s e-mail address. Hugo Sonia? The woman’s a man? And her/his real name reads like a pseudonym? Two weeks later I received Hugo’s reply to my polite inquiry if there was any recorded music I could get my clamps on, and – this is the point where this story turns incredible – not only was Hugo absurdly excited to receive ‘e-mail from a record label’, but he also turned out to be living only an hour away. We met up for coffee and a chat.

«About ten years ago I thought I should give it a shot. I recorded lots and lots of demos under the name **** ***. I did manage to have some of it released on CD, but to get somewhere sustainable with it… there was no way in hell», he explains. «And my day job was to train snails. I prepared snails, mentally and physically, to perform fancy shapes on national holiday. After several years of doing this kind of work, it was like my mind turned on itself. I couldn’t stand the sight of snails anymore. Especially snails forming patriotic words with their little bodies. It also kept me from writing music, which is what I really wanted to do instead. So I quit and turned to the public service sector of the music industry. I had to make up several monikers, including one for when I write music that I can’t stand listening to. To run into you is somewhat of a blessing, as I can finally get some of my work out there in a different way.».

After hearing this, I tucked away the most persuasive of arguments I had prepared to catch his interest with (e.g. «there is the off-chance that some people might enjoy hearing your music, even out of context» and «we can do like, a hundred copies of vinyl»). He happily agreed to do a series of releases filled with his private recordings as well as demos rejected by production companies; the latter makes up 3/4 of the music on Simulations Vol. 1, the track Vessels being the exception.

some of these tracks are so stripped-back and subtle that it's kind of difficult to get a good read on them, much less the album/piece/collection as a whole, only one listen in. it's all really hypnotic though. it's sort of like good minimalist techno with more varied percussion and rhythms. also a bit of dub, jungle, garage, and grime. at any given moment in a song there isn't too much happening: driving kick drums, some sparse synths that aren't particularly melodic, maybe some drone, percussion scattered toward the end of the phrase. it doesn't seem special or interesting in print but it all comes together nicely. these tracks are well-crafted and very nuanced, and as a result they are quite engaging. i think it's pretty exceptional. can't wait to hear more from these guys as a label/unit/collective/whatever

You always have to rememember that the releases were vinyl 12" releases first and now get re-released as a compilation so to me its hard to view this release as a album and listen to it as a whole.

To me these are essentially dj tools, which are made to be blended and thrown into a mix. Have seen some of these songs do wonders in a mix.

Glad to see some other people listen to their stuff, to me they are really pushing the boundaries of dubstep, techno and grime.
Standout songs are livity, velez, surge, more games and of course raw code, which had already seen a release on hessle

but I just did a search and didnt see mentions of two pretty dope producers i'm listening to at the moment:

A.M. Breakups:
http://ambreakups.bandcamp.com/
Does beats for Elucid, sounds like a student of El-P and I mean that in the best possible way

Constrobuz:
http://constrobuz.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-struggle
Did the best beats on eXquire's "Kismet" LP, sounds somewhere between Shlohmo's Bad Vibes and more traditional jazzy boom bap
