2765919, who's the last act you saw that was so talented they scared you?
Posted by bavid dammer, Fri Dec-28-12 08:55 PM
like they were pushing the limits on what you believed was possible that they honestly frightened you?

there's quite a few battle rappers out nowadays that make me feel like this.

madlib made me feel this way.

there's all sorts of old musicians who are dead or in their 60's-80's...
but they don't count for "new".

anybody out there have a clip you want to share of chops in such abundance it makes other people reconsider trying?
(and please don't post that kid who pushes buttons quickly on an mpc - i don't care about that bullshit anymore)
2765921, that Allen Stone basement video had me shook
Posted by Nodima, Fri Dec-28-12 08:56 PM
shame it didn't turn out the same way on Wax.

2765924, loaded lux's third round in his battle against calicoe
Posted by rhymesandammo, Fri Dec-28-12 09:02 PM
so much conviction. he put everything he had into that, but still managed to make it look easy.
2765927, there's so many nowadays...
Posted by bavid dammer, Fri Dec-28-12 09:10 PM
that are just on such a higher level than anything that could of been considered dope 10-15 years ago...

there's a kid named jc, check his stuff out.
he's one of the most talented imo.
2765933, I was seriously wondering if he was a Pastor
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri Dec-28-12 09:41 PM
2765934, you seen any battles by jc?
Posted by bavid dammer, Fri Dec-28-12 10:04 PM
lux's theatrics were the selling point, the rhymes weren't all that.
that last verse was sort of wack imo (naming black heroes to diss his father for being affiliated but then talking gunplay in his other verses)

listen to how many witty lines there is between the 2 of these dudes:

Calicoe is a good one 'cause i probably woulda cracked. i would have either started crying or started whooping his ass. maybe both. that shit was BRUTAL.

2765931, fuckin' Robert Glasper and Chris Dave.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Fri Dec-28-12 09:33 PM
Robert Glasper, imo, is a jazz GIANT. he's absolutely amazing on the piano.

Chris Dave does shit on drums that i never contemplated being possible. if i was still playing, i'd hang my drumsticks up.
2765932, WORD.
Posted by rhymesandammo, Fri Dec-28-12 09:39 PM
2766064, yeah, saw glasper at strathmore
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Sat Dec-29-12 09:14 PM
in bethesda at a mansion were the "room" was made of wood.

2766035, naw she's one of the best female live performers
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Dec-29-12 06:46 PM
dances, sings, showmanship etc
2766036, RE: naw she's one of the best female live performers
Posted by bavid dammer, Sat Dec-29-12 06:59 PM
>dances, sings, showmanship etc

no, i seen her.
but so talented it's scary?
i get that the way she performs is unusually for a woman, but then again so is her image.
she is for lack of a better word kind of lesbian imo.
i saw her do the prince tribute a few years ago at the bet awards and it was just awkward.
she shuffled and flailed around doing a jackie wilson/little richard and god knows what else...
it didn't do much at all for me except make me wince.
but one man's trash is another man's treasure.

i just never thought she would instil fear in other people as a talent...
2766053, lmao she must do this at every show....it works though
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Dec-29-12 07:32 PM

>she shuffled and flailed around doing a jackie wilson/little
>richard and god knows what else...

when i saw her ppl were giving her props for being james brown like
that level of energy is lacking in RnB (or whatever she does) so you have to credit her
2766057, i don't think she does it effectively...
Posted by bavid dammer, Sat Dec-29-12 07:56 PM
because it just makes me feel embarrassed for her.

and i've seen male soul singers do it better 40 years ago.
i dunno...
2766132, she's quite asexual
Posted by Reuben, Sun Dec-30-12 12:05 PM
>she is for lack of a better word kind of lesbian imo.

you're right that she is very atypical as a female artist in this age

very asexual
2766017, As far as live shows go....

Master Blazter really, really fucked me up when they came to Nashville last year. For just three people to rock like that was something to behold. Those who saw them know what I mean. RIP J-1
2766034, tyler the creator jimmy kimmel performance
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Dec-29-12 06:45 PM
2766037, word??/
Posted by bavid dammer, Sat Dec-29-12 07:08 PM
like maybe i didn't explain this effectively...

somebody doing something so amazing that it scares you.
something that NOT everyone could do.
somebody possessing and displaying a musical proficiency so high above the norm it's extraordinary.
2766054, o my bad. after seeing that performance i was scared for the industry
Posted by southphillyman, Sat Dec-29-12 07:33 PM
thought Odd Future was about to Doggystyle the game and push the genre further
didn't quite work out that way though
2766059, yeah, Yonkers made that group seem like a millenial Wu-Tang
Posted by forgivenphoenix, Sat Dec-29-12 08:12 PM
or something.

they had a provocative, un-nerving, un-filtered image like Wu-Tang and NWA. Yonkers sounded like the creation of a genius mad since birth.

but yeah, odd future didn't follow up on Yonkers with an album that matched the hype.

woulda been, coulda been
