2762098, a few years ago when Rolling Stone & company decided they needed
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Dec-07-12 10:27 PM
a new young dude of the 'hip-hop generation' to play bar-band quality blues to slather with compliments and compare to Jimi Hendrix.
2762099, Y'all are some hatin ass mfkrs man.

2762148, this cat killed it at Made in America festival
Posted by Delajoo, Sat Dec-08-12 08:57 AM
this summer. The tone on his guitar playing was great! Got Jay and Bey slowdancin at one point off to the side, im a fan.
2762534, I was there.. didn't see that slow dancin bit though
Posted by spew120, Mon Dec-10-12 09:49 PM
two damn good performances though, but I felt like he was there to appease the "pearl jam" crowd to break up the hip-hop monotony.
2762157, He's incredible live. Like, really fucking good.
Posted by Admbmb, Sat Dec-08-12 11:01 AM
His album is not the best, imo. The mastering is too "in your face" and squashes the best thing about his live sound: the dynamics. He's got the crappy Black Keys mastering that has already ruined their sound. It is harsh and just gives you a headache listening to it. I still have hope for him...as long as he stays in the blues/rock lane and doesn't try to trend-ride the corny pop/rnb stuff that a couple LP cuts hint at.
2762166, Bright Lights Big City got the commercial treatment
Posted by bentagain, Sat Dec-08-12 12:36 PM
can't remember if it was an ipod commercial or whatever

but you know what I mean

that song was the jawn

'you gon' know my name, by the end of the night'

but his album was a dud IMO

I thought forsure the Grammys were gonna push an agenda for him

like they did for Alabama Shakes and Frank Ocean

but I guess they didn't like his album either
2762539, cant wait for bavid dammer's analysis

http://video.pbs.org/video/2202801749/

was actually Feb. 2012, it seems, that it aired, so who knows when it was taped. Was also all kinds of a mess, but it wasn't his fault.

I'm not a big fan - no doubt he's a great guitarist, and I'm glad there is a young Black guy getting props for repping blues, but his music is more or less ordinary; I'm pretty much with Bomb on this.

2856844, Yeah, his music does nothing for me
Posted by CaptNish, Tue Nov-19-13 11:25 AM
That's not hate, but "eh"
2856866, Who these other talented cats yall feel should be in his place?

2856887, thank you
Posted by Menphyel7, Tue Nov-19-13 02:52 PM
he an old time folk rock tho I dont see that blowing up either way..I don't see Gary Clark JR. talkin his spot that seem like two different things.

I think of GAry Clark Jr. as electric blues rock..this seems to be more Folk acoustic rock but I'll check more of it out
2857071, I was thinking of a young guy who makes better music
Posted by lonesome_d, Wed Nov-20-13 10:59 AM
in a mostly blues vein.

BBP is more of a songster - while blues is the majority of his lexicon, he's fluent in early Black country styles as well.

Clark is more from the 'guitar hero' school of blues-rock.

But keep in mind that blues is mostly a dead genre at this point, and has been for 40 years with a few exceptions... he's not musically that much different at this point from Joe Bonnamassa, Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd or anyone else who gets celebrated as the next big blues thing but is really playing music that's just more Blueshammer than Blues. Hopefully he'll get better - I'd love to see that - but the historic pattern doesn't lend me too much hope.

So the idea that Clark should even have a 'spot' should be taken by someone else is kinda silly to me, like having a 'spot' for Dixieland or something. If I had my druthers there'd be a revival of interest in old Okeh sides instead of a media buzz of enthusiasm generated largely by the attitude that 'yeah, he's not that good, but there isn't really anyone better.'
2857076, I feel you and yea I do get more early black folk country
Posted by Menphyel7, Wed Nov-20-13 11:50 AM
He reminds me of the carolina cholcate drops.

Ill agree there needs to be a real revival thats get some attention.
2857037, i've really dug all of the live stuff i've heard....
Posted by Voodoochilde, Wed Nov-20-13 06:59 AM
all i've heard & seen are live performances by him and i was impressed and intrigued. (have audio of a few live concerts recorded from audience, and saw him and Alabama Shakes on Austin City limits. REALLy like the live stuff a lot.

have not heard the studio record though, so cant speak to that at all.

but if dude comes round for a concert i'll be checking the show out for sure...
