2761044, is electronic music totally inaccessible for okp's?
Posted by Kirk Baker, Tue Dec-04-12 09:26 PM
seriously.. i listen to some of this stuff coming out on edm labels and i am floored.. floored like hearing krs one rip for the first time floored.. like seeing rakim fuck wit an uzi and take heads off.. like listening to nas decapitate everything on illmatic with a fucking ninja chop x100... many of you call yourselves lovers of music and yet.. you hate.. when it comes to edm that is..

the ingenuity, creativity and professionalism that goes into these sub genre's is truly commendable.. it is the sound of the future.. you will literally hear a blend of anything and everything in some form... and finally.. the dance floor appeal.. i swear to you i have gone to good jam's and danced with total strangers as if they were lovers.. people let go and feel the love in ways that are truly beyond description.. okp you are missing out big time.. get your ass to toronto and ill show u a good jam or two...

Fuggin childish.
2761061, no man. im trying to share something great with you.
Posted by Kirk Baker, Tue Dec-04-12 09:47 PM
how can i take props for music i didn't make? i'm just trying to share the love man.
2761073, Looking at the OG post, there wasn't any 'hate'
Posted by spew120, Tue Dec-04-12 10:02 PM
Not at least til this pointless thread popped up. At that point, you were asking for it. I'm not down with EDM like that. I'm sure others are. But if your post doesn't hit folk like that, you shouldn't sweat it. I remember I got salty as fuck after 3 of my Earl Sweatshirt posts went wood when EARL dropped. 5 months later he suddenly was everywhere. It sucks, but you can take a horse to the water, but you can't force 'em to drink.
2761078, haha true enough..
Posted by Kirk Baker, Tue Dec-04-12 10:06 PM
honestly.. i don't even think about it.. after i write a post i forget about it because i smoke a lot of pot.. so legitimately.. i won't remember this post tomorrow unless i force myself to think about it.. i'm like a dog that caught his own tail.. and im tryinna let you know in the moment how happy the shit makes me you know?
2761082, And I think most of the Lesson appreciates "I'm digging this.." posts
Posted by spew120, Tue Dec-04-12 10:18 PM
Just keep it at that, and the people who want to find and listen what you're sharing, they'll find it. And the others will go about their business.

On top of that, the Lesson serves as a masturbatory fantasy land for most of these neo-Gertrude Stein muh'fuckers.

He still won't get it though.

A super strange post, though. It's not like there is anything new about dance music being amazing.
2761090, I Agree

If most OKP's forget the stereotyping & the in-crowd tags on things and just listen & explore music for just the love of good tunes then they will find out that it's a lot of music that will be pleasurable to the ears in edm & idm.

Stop waiting on a fucking cosign from your favorite celebrity's tweets or best friend who sits on the computer waiting on some commercial artist's albums to leak.

2761113, definitely.. like this gem for example...

EDM is easily the most exciting genre right now. It evolves so fast, I love it. So many pockets of styles that you can really "find your identity" (musically) within the umbrella term of EDM.

This makes for a dilemma though.

Completely ignoring the homophobic connotation EDM brings, most people are too lazy to sit/sift thru DJ mixes or even browse YouTube. The Lessoners are still on album format basically.

Anyway, I listened to all the tracks in your initial EDM post and was not impressed. Not my cup of tea, although the production was quality. Maybe others felt the same. Anyway, I'd love to be put onto more shit.
2761140, Cool man.. i guess its really hard to tell
Posted by Kirk Baker, Wed Dec-05-12 12:17 AM
what people might resonate with.. but you're right. .its such a diverse genre.. its hard to pick those undeniable tracks that everyone can love.. the edm i listen to and rave about is mostly centered in disco and slow deep grooves.. honestly.. u have to go out to a jam and experience it through the speaker and with the crowd.. when you get into edm.. the fast aggressive ear slamming stuff is all the rage.. but after a few years when you just can't take that anymore, you find yourself resonating with disco and so forth.. thats kind of where i'm at and i can definitely see how it can be hard to get into at first.. but i tell you.. sooner or later.. those bass lines are going to eff ur mind up and you'll be hooked! lol i hope at least!

Because who knows who the fuck is making the stuff? What are the defining albums? Is it even album based music? Are there lyrics?
2761166, Dance music isn't album based, and good dance music doesn't need lyrics.

therein lies why i am hesitant to dive in. Wouldn't know where to look. I'm overwhelmed with new music as is.

Dubstep, chillstep, trance, prog, house, most everything is lovely. Spotify is an absolute fantastic platform for it too, since it started in Europe.

If you want some hard hitting shit, try this:

Chillwave might be the same thing, although I've never heard that term myself actually.

Here are some examples of chillstep:

I don't think so.

There are occasional deep house threads and mixes posted up here. A lot of experimental beat maker talk.. Sometimes, there are posts about even more avant garde stuff that I have no idea about.

I can get down with house and other styles which naturally flow in and out of it, but I've learned much less on internet forums about records and artists than I have by just going out and hearing good DJs play at good parties.. and finding the right record stores with buyers/staff that know what they are talking about.

For those who want to get into it, but can't.. you just have to find the right DJs. Then, check out their parties or mixes. The artists, producers, and sometimes albums will follow.

It's a rather straightforward and simple process really.
2761507, I love this shit bruh.
Posted by Madvillain 626, Thu Dec-06-12 02:50 AM
Listening to the FACT magazine Jets mix right now (fucking SICK btw)

There have been a lot of great shows out here in LA this year, seen Legowelt, Bicep, Andy Stott, Demdike Stare, Shlohmo, Groundislava, among others.

It can be hard to keep up with all the great EP's and singles that have come out this year, and just a ton of distinct and endlessly repeatable mixes. (Nic Jaar live in Barcelona, any Hemsworth mix, Ukkonen Blowing up the Workshop mix, Night Slugs NSMIX002, Disclosure XLR8R Podcast off the top of my head)
2761519, Eh, there are EDM-threads on a weekly basis here...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Dec-06-12 06:45 AM
I'd argue that, second to Hip-Hop, it's the most discussed genre nowadays here in the Lesson, at least if we are talking the size of the threads and contemporary music (there are far less posts about ''cool'' indie than it was a couple of years ago and R&B/soul discussion is all but dead, even old stuff outside of Stevie, Prince and the usual suspects).

Anyway, it doesn't seem particularly inaccessible to the lesson at all compared with several other genres...
