it's better than Marcberg lyrically, but Marcberg was the better album

2754885, The problem with Marcberg was the timing Posted by spew120, Fri Nov-09-12 08:53 AM
It came out in late February of 2010 (I think). It didn't really 'hit' me til late March, when spring was kicking up.
Roc's music is best enjoyed in the bitter cold. I'm so looking forward to playing this in the Camry during a blizzard.

Highly anticipated.
Too bad it doesn't really get bitterly cold in Phoenix haha, but I'll be in my East Coast state of mine as best I can. :) __ I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!
Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

2755108, Album is dope! Posted by DaKidFromHaiti, Fri Nov-09-12 08:42 PM
|
2755138, Not on Marcberg's level but Posted by mrshow, Sat Nov-10-12 02:17 AM
a fine album after one listen. Don't think it works as well as the last one does as an album but Roc definitely stepped his rapping up here.
|
2755152, Dope Dope Dope! But.... Posted by 201cue, Sat Nov-10-12 07:05 AM
...i dont hear the Q-Tip influence in the production
|
2755175, Also, he's not writing songs on this album... Posted by 201cue, Sat Nov-10-12 10:02 AM
...he's just going in over beats
Still dope, but Marcberg had amazing, amazing songs on it
|
2755512, not feeling this very much. Posted by bavid dammer, Mon Nov-12-12 12:55 PM
i imagine this sounds to me how marcberg sounded to people who didn't like it.
it's like you got 1 song - you just keep making over and over and over and over again.
when i pressed play on marcberg in 2010, something like whatever whatever was fresh to me at that time. the style of rapping, the cool delivery. i mean it was already a throwback to stuff that cormega was doing 8-10 years earlier. but it was all a match. it just worked. this? i dunno. nothing here is doing it like that for me. roc is significantly older now than he was when he recorded the material for marcberg (06/07/08/09). it's like watching an athlete in the twilight of their career. theyre doing all the same things they used to do - but theyre just not as effective. this is very much a going through the motions album. it's like he's not even matching the beats at this point. he's just doing his usual thing and whatever the beat is doing is an afterthought. just no potency to me. i don't know maybe i'll start listening to shit like "thread count" and "nine spray" and i'll start accepting it, but i don't think so. this simply just isn't fresh in 2012. plus he did it better himself in 2010. just my 2.
you think i'm full of shit? compare the vocal performance on "snow" to "pistolier". you know what's different? 5 years of youth.
|
2755516, Lulz you've been pre-hating on this album for over a year. Posted by micMajestic, Mon Nov-12-12 01:09 PM
I respect your contributions to this board but honestly I think you're too much of a blowhard to be objective here.
|
2755521, RE: Lulz you've been pre-hating on this album for over a year. Posted by bavid dammer, Mon Nov-12-12 01:20 PM
>I respect your contributions to this board but honestly I >think you're too much of a blowhard to be objective here.
i know i have because the album is exactly what i feared (knew) it would be.
it's too repetitious. there's absolutely NO "growth" in the rapping. in fact he's actually regressed in his voice/delivery due to age. on marcberg he was meeting the energy of the beat to a certain degree. on this he's rapping the same style on every track and there just happens to be a beat doing something slightly different in the background. he's fallen off imo, but i guess it's enough LIKE marcberg none of you will be able to tell the difference. the issues with the album are effectiveness, potency, stagnation and maybe even timing too. my 2 cents, you have your own. you can take it however you want to. i don't expect anyone to validate any of the issues i've raised even when they notice them themselves. there's no corporation in my corner.

is that KA album better?
|
2755534, way better, imo. Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Mon Nov-12-12 02:06 PM
that's just off first listen though...
it's not wack, but it just feels like...we been here before. and it's not as exciting anymore. i'm about to listen to it again though, maybe it will hit me differently.
and i'm not sure if i like Roc & Ka together. he makes Ka sound comatose in comparison.
|
2755550, ummm...let's just say this sounds a lot better in headphones. Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Mon Nov-12-12 02:58 PM

2755682, THIS. Posted by Small Pro, Tue Nov-13-12 02:15 AM
It's pretty incredible the difference it sounds quality-wise between speakers and headphones...it's definitely something for cold city bus waiting or shit like that. you need to be able to focus on his wordplay or else it just sounds like rap blues

2755588, An OKP hipped this album to because I liked Marcberg Posted by Yank, Mon Nov-12-12 06:08 PM
in GD a couple of weeks ago, I bought it on iTunes within 5 mins of the post once I heard Roc.
that's how far I've gotten with this album since then, listening non stop.. even got songs in my head.
The Grief Pedigree project is the best thing I've ran across in a VERY long time... By far the most creative album in a good while between the beats, rhymes, audio and video production.
Pretty soon Im gonna make a in post here that's probably gonna piss people off

|
2755549, RE: The Marcberg Reloaded Post Posted by stone_phalanges, Mon Nov-12-12 02:57 PM
My first impression is that this is not the same album (musically) as the first one. It seems more free form less structured. I need some more time with it to decide if it is working or not.
|
2755579, Is it just me, or do all these beats sound alike? Posted by third_i_vision, Mon Nov-12-12 05:17 PM
I know they're all minimal as shit for the most part, but I can't tell the producers apart at ALL. The Tip song sounds like Roc could've produced it. I'm leaning towards putting this observation in the "oh it's a cohesive album" category, but after reading his recent interviews I was expecting something else on the production side.
The rapping is sick. Not much else to say about it. He got better and he was already good.
"Emeralds" and "76" stand out on the production end, but so far nothing on here grabs my attention like "Jungle Fever" did with the lyrics. That was one of the best SONGS I've heard in the last 10 years.
All in all, I like it and I think I'll come to appreciate it even more. I had high expectations though.
|
2755708, I thought Jungle Fever was kinda tired tbh... Posted by guru0509, Tue Nov-13-12 08:29 AM
> like "Jungle Fever" did >with the lyrics.
the personification of cocaine as a woman has been done several times before....but that beat is still ridiculous
> >All in all, I like it and I think I'll come to appreciate it >even more. I had high expectations though.
Yea, It didnt hit me initially like Marcberg did with that "oh shit" moment...but I'm still enjoying it.
He set the bar extremely high with his debut

2756224, Yea, I've been saying his for a minute Posted by Anonymous, Thu Nov-15-12 08:48 AM
I was tracking my favorite releases of each year last decade and noticed that 2000 was a really good year and the. It fell off all the way until 2009 in regards to be quantity of quality releases.
2010 and 2011 were good years as well but can only compare to 2000 and 2009 when you add in the mix tapes that dropped like Krit etc.
But really, I think this year has passed 2009 and possibly 2000 and may be more like 1994-1996 in terms or the quantity or quality releases.
I say all of this without hearing every release in each year obviously so I could be wrong.

perfect shit.
he zoned in on ay thing that made his style unique on marcberg but amped it the fuck up on some stream of conscious fly gangsta shit.
in some ways this reminds me of supreme clientele. v instictive almost free form rhyming and production.

Kind of Joycean, just not as extreme as 'Preme...
|
2756231, This is sick!! Posted by stone_phalanges, Thu Nov-15-12 10:34 AM
On a thorough listen this album is excellent. It revisits the sparseness of the original but remains fresh and the rhymes have evolved as well. He isn't just sayin' stuff I feel like every rhyme is very deliberate yet it's still flows as if effortless. This album feels like what Mic tyson could have been if it was crafted with more care towards how each song and rhyme effects the others.

2756725, Shit has some serious bangers but Posted by cbk, Sat Nov-17-12 12:23 PM
That's it. I miss the balance that tracks like "shoutro" and "hide my tears" brought Marcberg. Those reflective tracks. But maybe that's what he wanted--an all out dope-and-only-dope album.
With that said I'll be listening to this shit nonstop.
Between him and Ka, they've been giving us whole LPs with that raw Verbal Intercourse shit.

76 is so meh to me. I think Death Parade (my favorite), Tech to a Mack, Pistolier, We Ill, Emeralds, 20 Guns, Nine Spray and even Thread Count are all better. Just my opinion, doe.

2757918, Yeah not a big fan of 76 myself Posted by topaz, Wed Nov-21-12 08:24 PM
>76 is so meh to me.
probably because Pete Rock used that sample on NY's Finest already.

"You'se a meatball. Get squeezed on. Your physical being turn to cream corn."
"Young Don. Son's under the arm. He treats Lamborghinis like bumper cars"
"Niggas is penniless with skinny ribs. I fire semis at too many wigs. I feel like Billy the Kid, Skinny Big. You literally live as a guinea pig."

like the understated game changer that you didn't expect out of the underground
Dude came off very fake tough-guy and I don't love his voice (first impression)
but his approach to writing and stylistic commitment is to be commended
plus he says some slick shit once you get past the
'whore's clitoris... it tastes like porridge' type throwaways

2757896, A week later & I Hate this shit Posted by urbgriot, Wed Nov-21-12 06:11 PM
Maybe it's the drum less tracks, monotone flow, or limited subject matter.. Either way delete...

2774743, My thoughts exactly Posted by Eric B Is Prez, Fri Feb-01-13 05:00 PM
No drums, monotone delivery, narrow subject matter. This whole album is a one-trick pony. It's very good for what it is, but it isn't striving to be very much at all. I liked his last album but this one puts me to sleep.

2758424, starts out on a great note, ends on a nice one Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Nov-26-12 07:55 AM
(just going from the opener to "The Man", haven't heard the bonus tracks yet)
"Marcberg" definitely is a "style", hope he don't run that into the ground.

There are some solid joints but as said above Riding Around? Snow? the only thing approaching that level is 76. I'm not even sure if it gets 3 mics. No more than that for sure.

2759852, besides Tek To A Mack I was pretty underwhelmed on initial listens Posted by daskap, Thu Nov-29-12 10:45 PM
Roc in fulltime sleepy flow mode and the lack of drums caught me off guard, but after a solid 2 weeks of listening and letting it sink this has elevated to one of my favorites of 2012. Not ready to say if it's better than Marcberg, I've been juggling both back in forth and while they have the same aesthetic they feel like 2 different albums, which is a good thing and prevents Roc from sounding stale.

2760028, It's interesting Posted by 201cue, Fri Nov-30-12 01:25 PM
To me, Reloaded made Marcberg sound dated after a few listens.

2774688, the sample on Deeper. QTip is on that shit, i'm convinced. Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Fri Feb-01-13 02:29 PM

how do you think to sample that shit, fam??????
update: i've completely flipped my stance on this album. i love it. there are a couple songs that are skippers, imo, but i really dig it overall. the bonus tracks and the ones he put up on his soundcloud push it over the edge.

2775066, roc marciano produced "deeper" Posted by squeeg, Sat Feb-02-13 11:23 PM
Q-Tip did "Thread Count".
I'm with you on the album being a grower. I was disappointed on my first few listens, but now I can't stop playing it.

2849971, this album replaced the first quasimoto lp for me Posted by cbk, Wed Oct-23-13 09:00 AM
as an album that is definitely not my all-time favorite, but i probably listened to it more than any other record. probably cuz i can put it on, zone out, live life, drive, subconsciously recite the lyrics, nod my head, etc.
but also, when i put it on and get really engaged, it kinda blows my mind. so maybe it is one of my all time favorites!
i don't know. i felt like marcberg is better, but i definitely listened to reloaded 10x more.
