We're all friends here.

How can any fan of the Beatles listen to this repetitive drivel and think it is better than even 10% of the rest of their catalog?
2732922, RE: But in relation to their peers in 1962?
Posted by Austin, Tue Aug-21-12 12:20 AM
I mean, I could nominate 'Creep' (Radiohead) on the same grounds. But people still like that song.

2732928, Creep is leagues above Love Me Do
Posted by Reggie Jacxzon, Tue Aug-21-12 12:30 AM
In the grand scheme of things, Love Me Do may be superior a majority of the mainstream releases in 1962, but that is more of a condemnation of the constant stream of pablum in the mainstream than it is a commendation of Love Me Do's craft.
2733245, RE: Which was kind of my point:

Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Aug-21-12 02:40 AM
"Hello Goodbye" is just ass and "All you need is love" stinks too. Was "Obladi-oblada" a single? That's crap right there...
2733040, The lyrics to All You Need Is Love are beautiful
Posted by Reggie Jacxzon, Tue Aug-21-12 09:20 AM
And no, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da was never a single.

I can understand not liking those songs, but at least each contains more thought than Love Me Do.
2733051, yea all you need is love is a great song lyrically
Posted by Menphyel7, Tue Aug-21-12 09:38 AM
folks just hear the chrous but don't pay attention to the verses.
2733211, RE: The whole Please Please Me album, I find. . .
Posted by Austin, Tue Aug-21-12 05:20 PM
. . .is very underrated in the grand scheme of the Beatles.

And I'm no Beatles fanatic by any means. But I kinda sorta hate the whole "They didn't get good until Rubber Soul" sentiment that has come to prominence over time. I'm partly of the mind that they peaked with Rubber Soul.

I think Please Please Me is great.
I also think all of these Lennon/McCartney songs from that album are better than Love Me Do:
I Saw Her Standing There
Misery
Ask Me Why
Please Please Me
PS I Love You
and obviously There's a Place.

"Come On" - The Rolling Stones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV62UcqbcQA
2733100, Yes, that one is not very good...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Aug-21-12 11:39 AM
It also feels "dated" in the context of the time. Of course, I wasn't even close to being born then but it's just straight up 50's rock'n'roll with little new to offer. Maybe there's some subtle thing I haven't noticed but it pretty much sounds like a bunch of losers covering a Chuck Berry-song. It took some time for Rolling Stones to get going, as with early the Yardbirds and to a lesser extent the Animals (I say lesser because Eric Burdon had a killer voice and the organ give their songs some flavor), it's pretty much just the strength of the material that makes the song listenable and the originals were almost always better...
2733106, This is terrible.

Great artists and their worst songs.....

Run DMC---"Ragtime"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzb45zE2iLs

Like really? A rap song set to ragtime jazz music? FOH...lol

and another one....

Prince---"Jughead"

No need for a link...It's easily the worst thing the man has ever done...Tony M is the least of its worries....Shit is laughable...

I'm not sure....But what was Michael Bolton's first single?
2733228, Parliament's "Testify"
Posted by murph71, Tue Aug-21-12 06:09 PM

I know they re-recorded it later and it sounded much more funkier...but I found the original to be plodding and boring even for that time...
2733231, They had singles before that one
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Aug-21-12 06:31 PM
...however, I think (I may be wrong) "Testify" was the one where they started to go in a harder, funkier, more psych-soul direction (the earlier stuff is more Motown-esque). I think it's dope and may prefer it to the later one. And check this shit out:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av2qWFNgOq4 MUCH better than the 70's re-recording on "Up for the downstroke" IMO...
2733246, RE: And then, of course, they did all the recordings as. . .
Posted by Austin, Tue Aug-21-12 07:41 PM
. . ."The Parliaments" before even that.

And those were good, too.

I also really like the Parliaments version of All Your Goodies Are Gone, though that is a situation where the later version is definitely better.

As for The Goose...
I know it's blasphemy to suggest, but I think that Fishbone has the best recording of that song.
2733364, i'm that type of guy-ll cool j
Posted by aolhater, Tue Aug-21-12 10:52 PM
so many hits on that album ..who picked that song
