i like the snippets from the new one tho.
2721885, 5 yr anniversery? ...seriously?
Posted by DolphinTeef, Thu Jul-19-12 12:05 PM
k.
2721887, it's okay, prolly a Top 5 'Overrated By OKP' album though
Posted by Bombastic, Thu Jul-19-12 12:09 PM
along with Black Star, Grind Date, Game Theory & maybe Stakes Is High.

"everyone's entitled to their opinions" in the Nas post?

In other words, yea people around here love all the albums you just named (me included) but...that's just part of having an opinion, which we're entitled to, isn't it?

Iunno.
2721916, individual opinions, sure, what I'm naming are works that got
Posted by Bombastic, Thu Jul-19-12 12:55 PM
a highly disproportionate amount of praise/acclaim here contrasted by their overall view/standing in the genre outside of it.

2722144, That doesn't change the fact that they're opinions...
Posted by Brew, Thu Jul-19-12 10:10 PM
and naturally the albums you named are gonna get praise on a website created by a group who in one way or another is affiliated with every artist represented by those albums...

I mean I get what you're saying but I don't, at the same time. Haha. Not trying to bust balls.
2722406, on the ones who actually are 'affiliated' who have more than one album
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Jul-20-12 04:03 PM
which in this case means De La & The Roots, those albums are viewed in higher regard compared to the rest of their catalog here than anywhere else.

You will never hear people outside this site bring up Game Theory as The Roots' best album, here it's damn near the majority.

You will also never read Stakes Is High or Grind Date brought up in a 'best rap albums' list like you will see 3 Feet or Dead but here (particularly amongst the younger contingent) they're often touted as being better.

This is what places albums like this in the 'Overrated-On-OKP' category, their place is measurably disproportionate to the overall consensus.

Get It? Good.

Where outside this site?

Just about anybody I've ever talked to, Internet or face to face, who likes the Roots considers Game Theory to be one of their best 2 or 3 albums

I don't think I've ever heard anyone call Grind Date their best album or even close to it. But plent of people here and elsewhere say they love it. Again, an opinion. It got good reviews.

starting distancing yourself from it

'Black Star' is in the masterpiece category, anyone

2723479, nah, one truly great song in Respiration, a cool BDP reworking joint

and a solid opening salvo in Astronomy.

The rest is some of Hi-Tek's sleepiest beatwork, a lame Slick Rick homage which is basically redundant with Hater Players, and not much else worth remembering outside *maybe* Thieves In The Night.

It's a twelve-song collabo album that still manages to have plenty of snoozeworthy skipping material on it.

It's correct view is about a three-star out of five album when evaluated as an actual album outside the cultural milileu it was borne out of & symbolized.

Both Mos & Kweli's first solos were better and neither of those are amongst the Top 25-50 records this genre has to offer either.

Respiration is an all-time great rap song though, that was true then & remains true now.

that nigga get his carrer together or something?

cause if he would have lived up to the potential of this album there would be no need to be this nostalgic about an album that came out 5 years ago and a nigga still proving himself.

Cold hearted is amazing tho I'll give him that.

like mofo having 5 year high school class reunion...yall just want a reason to get fucked up stop it..most of yall still living at home right outta school talkin about 5 year reunion.

2721981, Exile's kind of obnoxious huh?
Posted by Brew, Thu Jul-19-12 02:23 PM
Says a bunch of corny shit throughout this. Especially his last line, killed me:

"That led to the formation of Blu & Exile, and the making of the *now classic* Below the Heavens"

FOH bro who says that.
2722033, meh I think you are being too harsh....he actually gives props
Posted by Stadiq, Thu Jul-19-12 03:40 PM
to a lot of different people in that interview...seems just generally enthusiastic about the album.

I don't blame him...its not a perfect album by any means but it is a phenomenal release- an outstanding album and he's a big part of why.

But dude actually comes across as Blu AND Aloe Blacc's biggest fan.

I didn't mind the read either...they are clearly trying to build hype and re-establish the brand after Blu's actions lately. Don't blame em at all.

Decent read...didn't realize how important Emanon was to putting Blu on...

2722147, I'm sure every artist has tons of dope beats submitted that they turn down...
Posted by Brew, Thu Jul-19-12 10:14 PM
we just hear about Common's a lot cause Kanye can't shut his mouth and other producers name drop him because who wouldn't want to submit beats to Common, especially pre-2007.

i'd be turned off if one of my favorite artists called their just 5-years-old album a "classic" to the camera
2722225, Yea don't get me wrong...
Posted by Brew, Fri Jul-20-12 08:07 AM
that line still gets the "WTF" look from me. I was just saying I don't know why I went as far as to call the guy "obnoxious" in a general sense since really that's the only line in the whole interview that really made me go "this mufucker serious?"
2722306, guess I give him a pass for that cuz
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Jul-20-12 11:38 AM

I kind of feel for him.

I mean, with Blu's recent antics he has kind of f*cked up things for both of them....including their paper.

They have to re-establish the brand for this release.

That line's over the top, but I get why...
2722281, Common would sound like a flower pot head on Exile beats
Posted by micMajestic, Fri Jul-20-12 10:40 AM
>***I'm still trying to figure out why Common turned down beats

He's been there, done that, he needs a little bit more urban thump than Exile can provide. It would have been hard for him to play the "I'm more masculine than you" card with Drake if he was rapping over Exile's Cali happy face beats.
2722008, Damn, when is new Emanon dropping??

LoL. bought that piece from UGHH.com. anyway, i had aLL the sound in coLor joints on vinyL too& shit.. the earLy mid 00's wasnt a bad time in hiphop Looking back, esp when myspace 1st was crackin
