At first, I was gonna come with an agenda poll...like "Is Larry Smith a Top 5 Hip Hop Producer?" and then only give the option of "Yes." Or even saying "Larry Smith vs. Marley Marl"...but eff all that.

I think he has to be the most underappreciated producer in Rap history, solely because most folks don't even know his name, and he's never mentioned, even by older cats who always prop Marley Marl, Rick Rubin, and anyone else in the 80's.

He created beats 25+ years ago that are still some of my favorites in history. When I first heard "Five minutes of funk" and "Sucka MC's," I had NO idea that they came from the same cat.

Does anybody have any history on him? Any stories? Any ideas to why he's never mentioned?

he hit when hip hop was still fresh on radio and had he hit in the 90's and beyond he would easily be mentioned with Dr Dre,Erick Sermon, Rick Ruben,marle marl, and others.

heck he would be given the love that the rza and timberland have gotten because both those cats combined can't touch his grooves.

the timing of when he hit worked against him in alot of ways sad to say.

i loved Whodini they were my favorite Rap Group back in the day.

we use to dance and pop to those grooves back in the day.

and he'd be more well known today, but I don't think that kind of thing interested him

he also pretty much refused to sample

so post 1987...he kinda disappeared

erroneously....

he did the biggest record... but not the best records (IMO)

and larry did the first two for dolo

Run-D.M.C. and King of Rock were in no way huge records

Raising Hell was

Rubin co-produced the album that broke them huge (him and Russell)

And he (allegedly) was the one who came up with the idea of pairing them with Aerosmith

I know we want to praise Larry Smith for his great work, but we can still do that and not shit on Rubin at the same time

Marly Marl or Rick is known as the first big hip-hop producer they just overlook Larry smith.. dude don't even got a wikipedia last I look.

From a musician standpoint, you also gotta include his work on the first two Fat Boys albums as well.
Kurtis Blow produced the records (probably Buff too...I'm sure he came up with MAD ideas on those accapella joints),
but Orange Krush (Larry Smith and Davy DMX) were gettin' busy with the instruments on joints like "Jailhouse Rap" and "Can You Feel It?".
