This is particularly true when beloved famous people come out, which is why the gay community pushes them to do so once the rumors start swirling. It helps average straight people raised in a homophobic environment to broaden their minds: "If that nice Doogie Howser is gay, maybe gays aren't so bad after all."

That may not be everybody's motivation, or the only one that applies, but it's a big part of it.
