Serious Question: why do gay people always have to make an announcement about coming out, what purpose does that serve?

for example ive never casually found out a celebrity was gay/lesbian like maybe the paparazzi snapped a photo of them out and about with there signifigant other one day or the subject just coming up in an interview its always an announcment.

If lgbt just want to be accepted isnt that kind of counterproductive?
