2703349, what's more popular: the sample or what sampled it
Posted by Bblock, Fri May-25-12 03:08 PM
i'll start it off: blind alley vs bdk's ain't no half steppin'

funky drummer vs pe's rebel without a pause

skull snaps vs stezo's it's my turn

add on
2703378, 60% of the time it's what sampled it
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri May-25-12 05:22 PM
a lot of less-than-a-dollar records got pumped up to insane amounts after being sampled (and being popular off that). Like Skull Snaps, especially. "Impeach The President" wasn't that popular a song until it was sampled.

the 40% when it's not, is when it's a straight jack or an "obvious" jack of a song that was popular in the first place.

Like most James Brown (I wouldn't say "Funky Drummer" counts, because it wasn't included in Greatest Hits collections for a while).

2703381, Super Freak vs. Can't Touch This

2703597, Can't Touch This charted higher.

If this was about quality, of course the original wins. And maybe once the 90s nostalgia goes away Can't Touch This will fade away as an ironic choice to throw on, but for now I think it still a better known song. But Super Freak will be the most popular song in the long run, while Can't Touch This will probably be forgotten.

Daft Punk's version is better than the shit with Ye essentially just spitting over it. Ye spits his usual conceited bullshit (see below) No thank you I'll take the original.

"Bow in the presence of greatness cause right now thou has forsaken us, You should be honored by my lateness That I would even show up to this fake shit So go ahead go nuts go ape shit Especially in my pastel on my bape shit Act like you can’t tell who made this New gospel homey, take six, and take this, haters"

2703573, This is a good one
Posted by Dr Claw, Sat May-26-12 05:52 PM
my instinct is to say "De La"

but I hear that song now so much in old school sets I have to wonder if they didn't yap because it was such a popular song.

it was a BITCH to find the song in any compilations or its holding album in any form from its discontinuation in the '80s until 1993 though.
2703648, I thought that was the reason they amped cause they needed
Posted by Menphyel7, Sun May-27-12 12:10 PM
a single and that's why they hated the song.
2703652, I wouldn't be surprised.
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun May-27-12 12:48 PM
ironically it is my favorite De La Song, not just because of the use of that record (and how they flipped it for the video/12") but because really... it is a pretty good intro to the group. Like, that might as well be the De La Soul mission statement in 1989.
2703535, popular among whom?
Posted by SoWhat, Sat May-26-12 12:16 PM
2703603, RE: Hip hop fans, obviously.

2703568, Masquerade Is Over vs. Who Shot Ya
Posted by briwil25, Sat May-26-12 05:22 PM
It's tough for me.

Masquerade is such an epic soul masterpiece, but on the other hand I'd never have discovered it if I didn't hear Who Shot Ya first.

Not to mention, that's Big's finest moment as an MC.
2703645, big
