2689286, Tool, Deftones, and Chevelle...
Posted by amplifya7, Sun Apr-22-12 06:53 PM
I dunno why but for the past 48 hours i've been listening to almost nothing but these 3 bands and its connecting with me in a way that kinda music hasn't connected for a long time.

honestly Tool is amazing to me. AEnima has to be one of the best albums i've ever heard. I need to spend more time with the rest of their discog.

This Chevelle album "Wonder What's Next" is like a combination of Tool, Deftones, and Incubus or something...I found it looking up Tool stuff. Probably not as good as tool or deftones but i like it.

I used to own the Deftones "White Pony" album, not sure if I maybe still have it somewhere. I've only ever heard that album + "Shove It"...i should probably dig deeper into their stuff. I re-d/ld White Pony...it sounds even better than I remembered.

What are some other bands in this category? I was trying to listen to Opeth but was turned off by screaming, and couldnt find any links for Porcupine Tree albums.

Why doesn't this kinda music...i guess i'd describe it as some combination of melodic dreary heavy metal/grunge/ambient/experimental...get more respect from general 'music heads'? it's all around great to me in just about every way but lyrics. the songwriting, musicianship, productions..some pretty amazing shit.
2689291, i dunno, i like tool's and deftones' lyrics

2689301, you should listen to lateralus i think its their best work
Posted by IceburgSmurf, Sun Apr-22-12 07:10 PM
and one of the greatest Lps ever made (but that is an apparent somewhat blasphemous statement)

as for why its not more popular, its just a niche music group probably too heavy for casual music fans. More importantly why its important to you that the general music fan cares is something you will probably have to ask yourself.
2689313, yeah, ive heard every tool album except opiate ep
Posted by amplifya7, Sun Apr-22-12 07:25 PM
ive listened to lateralus a bunch, i just don't know it front to back like I do AEnima
2689534, i'm with you...aenima is their masterpiece imo.

Haven't listend to it in a long time, but I used to love it. Those guys suck now, are tools, and are awful live, but that album will always have a special place in my heart lol.
2689342, They bit off their influences pretty successfully

The next two albums aren't too bad, I particularly liked Vena Sera. But they are pretty horribe now.

Deftones kind of get lost in the Rage, Korn, Incubus, etc "nu-metal" shuffle. it's honestly i "genre" i appreciate a lot, but around these parts gets hated on

never heard Chevell

do it.

freal.

also if you've never listened to a perfect circle (lead singer of tool's other band), get on that too.

always liked chevelle. they're like a more radio-friendly tool.,they do what they do and they do it well.

2689387, I always preferred deja entendu but that could have been timing
Posted by Nodima, Mon Apr-23-12 01:14 AM
because that period between those two albums I thought I'd stumbled onto my generation's Smiths with that group, even though their guitarist wasn't exactly Johnny Marr.

Devil & God had its moments but it indulged in some stuff I was hoping they were going to drift further from. that Deja Entendu album will always crop up layers and layers of awkward nostalgia, though.

i always thought they succeeded greatly.

you'd prolly like that whole demo/EP if you liked deja but didn't like the darker turn of devil & god. it's called 'fight off your demons' and it was a whole buncha stuff that leaked from the early stages of making their next album after deja. some really good stuff on there.

yeah, that was before devil & god if I remember right. and it was part of what I was alluding to. I expected this thing that didn't happen.

I heard Daisy in passing but by the time it released I was pretty over this style of music. I can wax nostalgic on it and when the mood's right it hits but, I've never given Daisy the shot it probably deserves considering how much love I have/had for that group.

also the B-Sides and rarities album... Deftones self-titled was alright... I remember really liking it a lot when I first heard it, but it's the album I go back to the least...

I never listened to Saturday Night Wrist really... Diamond Eyes was pretty good though...

edit: I guess I should've read more of your post before replying...

as far as other bands in this "category" or whatever... I don't really know... I really think Chino's voice and the Deftones sound is pretty unique, but maybe I just haven't haven't been exposed to other bands with a similar sound... Same thing goes for Tool, imo...

I find that Tool is very well respected amongst general music listeners that listen to any form of modern rock or "alternative" (whatever that means)... I always thought the Deftones were huge because I grew up in the bay area... Back in junior high and highschool, they were pretty much everyone's favorite band...

if either of those 2 bands aren't respected, I really have no idea why...
2689437, i prefer SNW to s/t

I like "heavy rock" as much as the next man but all those bands are rooted in a 90's "angst-rock"/"Heavy alternative" aesthetic which I find extremely offputting not to mentioned watered-down and lame; that's not where I'm coming from when it comes to the heavier stuff-I like stuff more aesthetically in line with 80's metal and hardcore and 70's hardrock. Not a big fan of Opeth either but I MUCH prefer them...
2689467, who are your favorite bands that fall in this?

It's not exactly hard work. Besides, there's a lot of lessonheads whose schtick is more tiresome or repetitive than mine, if it wasn't for them, I would stop. I'm trying to fit in man, trying to build a brand and everything.

Seriously, a question was asked aboyut why those acts didn't get the respect they supposedly deserve from the "general" music fan (a question I don't understand. Who is this "general" music fan? An eclectic indie-dude?). As a "general" fan of heavy rock, I offered my opinion which is not unique. However, since noone else said it, I took it on me to do so...

I mostly just cant stop listening to Tool though...im bout to put RATM discography back on my laptop as well

another band i feel like should be mentioned in this thread is System Of A Down, I should probably check out their albums as well if we're talking about "good" 90s metal/heavy alt rock that has some hip hop/electronic music influence

edit: after youtubing them SOAD are kinda cartoonish and corny compared to the other bands being mentioned...theyre more in the Linkin Park/Korn/Limp Bizkit category I think
2689776, Not at all

>edit: after youtubing them SOAD are kinda cartoonish and corny

Imho they were the torchbearers for quality hard rock/mainstream metal in the '00's, especially since you can argue Tool and the Deftones peaked right at the beginning of the decade.

On the surface its easy to to 'Yeah, cartoon voices and mandolin, kind of corny'. Reality was that it was pretty damn experimental; imagine Frank Zappa and Slayer collabing on Middle Eastern covers, lol. Even if you can argue that the punk/metal/eastern fusion failed, they deserve their place on the pantheon simply based off talking the talk and walking the walk; during the George Bush era they CONSISTANTLY took him to task wearing their mid-east heritage on their sleeve.

Who else could have pulled off a hit song with lyrics like, "We all live in a facist nation, why do presidents fight the war, why do they send the poor?" at the height of the Iraqi war... while going multi-platinum. The fact that they balanced their socially conscious songs with some levity is why they were so prolific in the decade while Rage Against The Machine fizzled under the weight. They were 'different' and considering how stagnant heavy music tends to be, it was needed with how shitty mainstream American rock was after the nu-metal collapse.

Great band.

It's a shame that System Of A Down had to become a cheap knock-off of Green Day. Nasal lead singer whining about suburban/city life.

Toxicity still holds up pretty well, though. "Chop Suey, " "Aerials," "The Prison Song," etc. Very unique vocals and strong melodies.
2689905, This never happened, lol.

>It's a shame that System Of A Down had to become a cheap
>knock-off of Green Day. Nasal lead singer whining about

Their discography is pretty damn solid; only flaw id give it was separating their last album into two; Hypnotize was as good as Toxicity, but the quick follow up (a la Radiohead Amnesiac) Mesmerize was a weaker effort.

Id say they stopped making new records at the right time.
2689895, BTW, the latest Opeth-album had clean vocals...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Apr-24-12 07:40 AM
No screaming or growling as far as I can remember. I only heard it once at work but it sounded pretty good and more mellow than much of their earlier stuff which in this case is good since the more mellow, prog-aspect of their sound was more convincing than their extreme metal component which was too rooted in melo-death to be enjoyable...
2689942, Tool and Deftones I never get tired of
Posted by crow, Tue Apr-24-12 10:02 AM
Lateralus to me is the best disc, but Aenema gets the most play. That bad I think is damn near flawless and listening to em so many years later I still find new nuances. For example:youtube fibonacci sequence in the song Lateralus.

Deftones I've always loved as well. I thought their new album was great. Favorite will always be White Pony tho.

to them a bit in my younger days. The two albums I have, which I believe are their best two, are Betty and In the Meantime. I'm not sure if they were ever popular, but they made some noise in the mid 90s. They play that heavy, up-tempo rock.
2874614, in the meantime is good shit, too!

my man.
2874648, Helmet ''invented'' the typical nu-metal riffing/rhythm-combo
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Mar-11-14 12:20 AM
...on their debut "Strap it on" and the follow-up "In the meantime". Korn and all those bands should send Page Hamilton a dollar for every album sold in influence-royalty and unlike the nu-metal acts, Helmet didn't weed out their ideas with a bunch of bullshit; very *pure* band-kind of like a post-hardcore AC/DC even if they started to go more diverse/diluted (and worse but their style was so monochromatic they just *had* to evolve) on "Betty". And Pantera and ''groove''-era Sepultura owe them a lot too even if I guess Sepultura had started to put some riffs (not so much grooves) like that into their music earlier; obviously, Helmet drew a lot from thrash as well; actually, that's what they did-they recontextualized metal-riffs/dynamics in a post-hardcore/"heavy alternative" framework and then it seeped back into metal backwards, kind of strange.

BTW, during the height of grunge and that stuff, Helmet was usually the alternative-band that the older metal-bands who wanted to remain relevant but still didn't want to go all alternative and desert their fanbase drew most influence from; they were the most "politically correct" alternative band in metal-circles...
