2688646, my pick (Obama)
Posted by johnbook, Fri Apr-20-12 02:01 PM
I sent this through other means, didn't realize this was posted so I'll post it here. As handle would say, I'm going to go "Hula Hula" mode for this:

Cecilio & Kapono's "Someday"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD8n7KItBf8

Emphasis is on the chorus, which goes:
"we got to do it
(let's get together, do it again)

All over again
(let's get together, do it again)

We got to do it
(let's get together, do it again)

Someday..."

The song was released in 1975 on Cecilio & Kapono's second album, ELUA (Hawaiian for "two"), on Columbia Records . C&K were considered to be Hawai'i's Seals & Crofts, played tons of shows in California in the early 70's, including opening for Frank Zappa, before they were signed by Columbia for three albums.

I select this for a few reasons. One, this song would be very much a part of Obama's youth, as C&K were on Hawaiian radio almost endlessly. The chorus is a way of saying "let's vote for him again", to help campaign for him once more, to do it again in the hopes of better days. So I select this as a reflection of his childhood in Hawai'i, and a great song that looks forward to hopefully four more years by briefly going back. It would be cool for James Poyser to recreate the string arrangement in the song too.

The song is registered with ASCAP under Henry Kapono's full name, "Kaaihue, Henry K H"

=================
As for the lyrics to the entire song, it's about someone partying and having fun, so the only thing that would prevent this song from being used is the part in the first verse about "getting high and having fun", but that is not why I chose this, honest. I'm looking at the chorus. Again, a song of optimism.

ALTERNATE CHOICE:
If lyrics are an issue, I'll pick another Hawaiian song from his childhood, and this one is an instrumental:
Kalapana's "Black Sand" (begin at 1:02)

When I first saw this photo of Obama:

I immediately thought of "Black Sand", because that's the kind of vibe that existed back then, that "I'm hangin' at the beach with friends, and life is good".
