2681856, What album has the best collection of beats ever? Posted by cheesecake, Wed Apr-04-12 06:45 PM
I'm not asking from an objective point of view what's the best, too many people will say Illmatic, give me your personal favorite, like genuinely your favorite, don't try to be cool. And why. Disregard the raps and everything else. Mine? I'm not sure I'm thinking.

2681858, good question Posted by forgivenphoenix, Wed Apr-04-12 06:53 PM
edit - i didn't read where you wanted why. in that case i'll say midnight marauders. (i could also say doggystyle)
i prefer this album because it's kind of the natural child of The Low End Theory. The eclectic use of sampling is there, and the quality of the mixing is there, but i think because Tribe didn't re-invent the wheel with Midnight Marauders they had a chance to make the project more cohesive. i also like how the style of tracks vary amongst the ones on the album. there's quirky (Steve Biko), hip-hop-pop perfection (Award Tour), moody (Midnight), smooth (Electric Relaxation) and bangin' (God Lives Through).
i still listen to this record regularly and i've had it since it came out almost 20 years ago. it's as timeless of a hip-hop record as has been created.

Mines is either Doggystyle, or the Blueprint. These are albums that had beats that were so immediately catchy to me, while really well crafted too. Also, Doggystyle was the first time synths were so spotlighted in a record that I heard, and the way Dre used them was perfect and to me, they never have been used in a better way since. But also, maybe more importantly, these albums were so impactful to me growing up and have followed me ever since.
|
2681872, Ha - these are the exact 2 I thought of, too. Posted by Brew, Wed Apr-04-12 07:15 PM
Doggystyle for the reasons you stated but also because of how impressive it is that Dre took samples, and replayed them with live instruments. The sound is so crisp and clean; vintage Dre. I mean that album has like 3 or 4 of my favorite beats of all time in The Shiznit, Murder Was the Case, Doggy Dogg World (smoothest beat ever made) and Gz and Hustlaz.
Blueprint because the soul sampling was so well done and so consistent start to finish. Blaze and Kanye really set themselves apart on that album.

You're really into instrumental albums/beat tapes aren't you? As some who's familiar with the beat tape scene, is Donuts considered to be the best? If not, what are?

------------------------- “The other dude after me didn’t help my case. It was just like…crazy nigga factory going on.” Dre makes no apologies for his own eccentricities. “I was young, and searching, trying to find myself,” he says. “Never did.”-- Andre B
