love his 60's singles the best.

hit and miss with his 80's material though his version of the "Star spangled banner" is classic IMO.


i loved when he found his voice and tapped into subject matters which expanded his musical horziens and he truly broke the tradition at motown.

what alot of younger heads don't understand is that Marvin gaye

was as pop as Bieber and did it the right way with his duets,etc.. Bieber at best is like Joey Lawrence with money on him

"What's Going On?" and "Let's Get It On"

I remember as an 8-year old kid, I didn't know much about Marvin Gaye at all. I think this was around the time Thriller was out, "Sexual Healing" was getting a lot of burn on the radio as well. I would hear it much as I rode in the hatchback trunk of my carpool's station wagon. I remember watching the Grammy's that year and seeing him win. I remember the first time seeing him perform live was on Motown 25. Of course, I was only really watching to see Michael Jackson, but Marvin was really up there singing. Then, we heard the news.. I was a kid and wasn't really familiar with his legacy and discography at all.. but I do remember having his image, name, and voice engrained in my psyche for a good amount of time just before he was taken away. I will always remember that.

Sure "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" is one of his signature songs but to me he did worked with the psychedelic soul sound the best. Songs like "You", "That's The Way Love Is", "Chained" are all amazing. Definitely one of the best and always tried to do his own thing.

but my two favorites are undoubtedly TROUBLE MAN and IN OUR LIFETIME?

the former, because I have an innate love of soundtracks, movie/TV cues and things like that... and there, Marvin was letting his inner instrumentalist out in a way that I'll always point to when discussing him as a musician. In his catalog it's kind of looked as a slightly more favorable JOURNEY INTO THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS. I love that one.

IN OUR LIFETIME? was the last album that sounded like the "real" Marvin to me. Unfortunately, the drama behind this album had it released about 2 years after it really should have been. The album sounds straight up out of 1979... by '81 R&B was sounding a lot more like The Commodores' IN THE POCKET and Rick James's STREET SONGS and I imagine all the "extras" on the songs was a little too much. Still, it's got a lot of the things that made Marvin great in the '70s but unlike the solemn tone of many of his albums in the period, this one mostly felt like some fun. "Ego Trippin' Out" reminds me a lot of my uncle (that favored Marvin strangely enough) when I hear it. I'm not really clear on how it was receieved by critics, but I figure it must have been middle of the road.

I got a few Marvin moments...

"Distant Lover" live version (good call...one of the best live R&B recordings ever done...hearing the chicks scream is always hilarious)...

"Trouble Man" (man...that shit is haunting...And the orchestra behind Marvin? Genius...)

"Save the Children" (the one song that still brings a tear to my eye. I can't get pass towards the end when Marvin cries, "Save the babies..." It gets me every time....)

Albums, I tend to go back to I Want You and Let's Get It On the most....

Basically, Marvin is the GOAT R&B vocalist....That's all...
