top of the head rhyme?

again according to Moe D BDK's verse was off the top of the head and prior to this "freestyle" had never been RECORDED on wax before

for those of you who have read his book is thats what he was saying? cuz thats what I think he said

supposedly it was a track Marley Made for Frick & frack that Biz and Kane heard and just goofin around got on it

Frick & Fracks verses got cut cuz they wernt on cold chillin

what was left sounded good and was pressed up on a 12" and the rest is history

if this is true I wonder why a bigger deal was never made about this song?

also was this common knowledge prior to Moe D saying it?
2680557, it was a radio freestyle

i have the version where he says next up is frick and frack, then it cuts off
2680564, RE: it was a radio freestyle

so they were in studio rhyming live?

I think that contradicts what Moe D said

he said it was a Frick and frack song intially

but in any case is this the first recorded "freestyle"?
2680597, i don't know where they were recording
Posted by Bblock, Mon Apr-02-12 11:41 AM
it was a freestyle played on the radio
they cut off frick and frack and put it on bdk's lp
the raw remix? it's from the kool g rap and kane freestyle
played on the radio.
then after the remix verse from that freestyle, the regular version comes on

that's all i know.
i got the version where they call frick and frack to the mic and then it cuts off
like on the lp version, when he says, do i come off, yup
and the music cuts off
well on this one, the music keeps playin' and he goes 1,2 1,2 frick and frack etc.then it cuts off
2680859, Marley talks about it in "Check the technique"
Posted by ABROCK33, Mon Apr-02-12 08:25 PM
Frick and Frack wernt signed to Cold Chillen so they couldnt use their verses

BDK also spoke on Raw. The original Raw was already recorded. Him and G Rap used to have a friendly comeptition and call each other and read each other rhymes on the phone. In the studio Marley let the Raw reel roll and GRap just hopped on and spit some writtens

>like on the lp version, when he says, do i come off, yup
>and the music cuts off
>well on this one, the music keeps playin' and he goes 1,2 1,2
>frick and frack etc.then it cuts off

good stuff

Check the technique pg 42

speaking on "Just rhymin w Biz"

"Frick & Frack was actually on that one, originally. It was just a two-track I lifted off the dat tape. The track just happened, when the beat was playing. Kane just started out with. "Check it out yall..." and it went from there.....Frick and Frack wern't signed to Cold Chillin at the time so I cut there verses off.

between this and KMD's quote below it points to BDK's verse beeing off the top of the dome.

Ive never heard this pointedly asked to BDK tho but I would love to hear his answer.
2680598, both verses are written though (by Kane)

2680600, who stated that it was written and not freestyled?
Posted by ABROCK33, Mon Apr-02-12 11:44 AM
this is the essence of what I am getting at

did Kane himself say this

if u listen to it it "sounds" like its could be off the top of the head

compare it to Kanes written raps at the time. he is def a better writer than that

i need clarity

because if this indeed was freestyled as Moe D said this was monumental
2680674, can anyone give insight?

.
2680845, Biz was no way possible freestyled...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Apr-02-12 07:53 PM
...he never wrote a rhyme that dope ..thats Kane's pen ...Kane's verse might be partly improvised at times, but thats an incredibly dope verse to just make up on the spot ..but yeah, i got no proof
2680850, agree bout Biz but still dont c where BDK's verse wasnt off the top

>...he never wrote a rhyme that dope ..thats Kane's pen >

agreed Biz's verse is obviously written

>...Kane's verse might be partly improvised at times, but thats
>an incredibly dope verse to just make up on the spot ..but
>yeah, i got no proof>

I don't know if youve read Kool Moe D's book but Ima put up the direct quote where he states BDK is freestyleing of the top of the dome when I can...probally tommarow.

He also makes a point to differintiate the off the top of the dome freestyling that became popular later (mid 90s) from freestyling in the sense of a "no main topic rhyme"

KMD is credible s far as I know

There's a god on the mic pg 306

"What Kane has contributed to the game can never be denied. One of his most overlooked contributions is how he set the trend to change the terms of freestyle. Until, 1986, all freestyles were written. Any emcee coming off the top of the head wasnt really respected. The sentiment was emcees only did that if they couldnt write. The coming off the top of the head rhymer had a built in excuse to not be critiqued as hard. That all changed when Kane and Biz Markie recorded "Just rhymin with Biz"

The word on the street was that a tape of Biz Markie and this new emcee BDK and they were just fooling around, rhyming off the top of the head. That tape turned into a hot single and changed the perception of what a freestyle was....
