2680139, de la...first serve...let's talk about it
Posted by Bblock, Sat Mar-31-12 07:47 PM
it's out
first impressions
the beats ain't bangin' or catchy to me
they've had better production on their previous lps
i don't want to say it sounds dated
because it doesn't sound as fresh as
their shit did back then
it sounds like older people tryin' to do hip hop
is the best way i can describe the music
they shoulda got kanye on the beats...
though it does remind me of the beats a bit from a prince among thieves...
2680141, I agree with you. It's their first major discography blemish, IMO
Posted by CMcMurtry, Sat Mar-31-12 07:57 PM
>they shoulda got kanye on the beats...

LOL I don't think this is as easy as you suggest. Kanye doesn't really make beats for other artists anymore, including on his own label.
2680146, No official album since '04 and they return with this failed attempt...
Posted by Ghetto Black, Sat Mar-31-12 08:36 PM
at satire?

Perplexing...
2680148, At this late in the game why play it safe?
Posted by zuma1986, Sat Mar-31-12 08:41 PM
I mean I'm not digging it by any means but can appreciate them trying to do something. I heard they're making a real album very soon with Prince Paul so I'm still excited for new stuff from them
2683365, what
Posted by quatto, Sun Apr-08-12 02:13 PM
whered you hear that. all the shit theyve leaked for the new album hasnt been with paul. though it sounds straight. you got any evidence?
2680151, i just hope everyone know that this is a "joke" lp
Posted by astralblak, Sat Mar-31-12 09:03 PM
as in there is a narrative and reason they tape sounds the way it does, no excuses for it being sub par, but... i mean... whateva whateva

NAW THEY'RE TOO DAMN DUMB TO GET OR TOO BUSY TRYING TO HATE BEING ON SOME SNARK SHIT

WHAT THE OP FAIL TO MENTION WHICH WAS PROBABLY DONE ON PURPOSE....IT'S A CONCEPT ALBUM IN THE SENSE POS AND DAVE ARE PLAYING TWO CHARACTERS WHO ARE TOTAL OPPOSITES OF THEMSELVES...THE BEATS ARE DONE BY TWO FRENCH CATS WHO HAD THE IDEAL OF PUTTING THIS TYPE OF ALBUM TOGETHER THEN POS AND DAVE CAME UP WITH THE CHARACTERS SO THAT'S HOW THIS ALBUM CAME ABOUT.

MASEO SAID ON THE REDBULL INTERVIEW THAT THIS ALBUM CAME OUT TO BE FUNNY AS HELL. SO MY GUESS IS THAT ALBUM MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT TOO INTELLIGENT FOR SOME PEOPLE TO GET IT OR UNDERSTAND THE HUMOR
2680403, why people want to listen to wack music tho
Posted by Menphyel7, Sun Apr-01-12 06:15 PM
They first 3 albums had satire, weird, quirk, inside jokes but that shit was dope.

I ain't hear the album yet tho but you can make some shit funny but dope.
2680156, So far it sounds pretty good
Posted by Controversy1999, Sat Mar-31-12 09:49 PM
I'm on track 3, and I'm surprised by how much I like it so far. The beats & rhymes are pretty fun. It's not something that's gonna pack the dance floor at a party, but for chillin in your apartment, it's pretty cool.
2680263, new rap genre: chillin' in your apartment music
Posted by Bblock, Sun Apr-01-12 11:10 AM
damn, how far real hip hop has fallen...
2680278, the actual facts are that music is FAAAAAR more often listened to
Posted by philpot, Sun Apr-01-12 11:52 AM
at home or by oneself (ie headphones) or in the car than at a club or public setting
2680441, maybe, but i don't want my mc's to make chillin' at the apt rap music
Posted by Bblock, Sun Apr-01-12 08:29 PM
shit don't even sound excitin'
sounds like some shit weed smokers would listen to
oh wait, curren$y already does that
i think weed smokin' was the worst thing to happen to rap music
once rappers really acknowledged and bragged about smokin' weed
the music started to suffer
2683364, RE: maybe, but i don't want my mc's to make chillin' at the apt rap music

some of the stupidest shit i've ever heard. so the chronic was wack? doggystyle? shit, i wouldnt be surprised if hip hop started in the first place because some niggas was smokin some weed
2683943, those two are not chill lps. them shits bump and get the club hype
Posted by Bblock, Tue Apr-10-12 12:11 AM
and are excellent joints to ride around bumpin' in the whip
which is where i experienced them
2680295, i see you're back to 07/08 BBlock trolling

.
2680169, this is them trying to recreate those Gorillaz $$$'s.
Posted by KennyFresh, Sat Mar-31-12 10:40 PM
im at least glad they didnt call it De La Soul
so we can act like it never happened even easier.

because the REAL new De La still sounds crazy

2680949, Exactly, This Is A Collaboration Effort Not A De La Soul Album
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Apr-03-12 12:35 AM
I think once people understand that, then they will digest it as something else not another De La Soul album.

2680458, RE: de la...first serve...let's talk about it

not as bad as you all are making it seem. i found it kinda pleasant actually.
2680461, halfway through
Posted by Eddy, Mon Apr-02-12 04:44 AM
that Must Be The Music hook is wack, some of the other tracks are decent tho'

AGREE! MOST OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER WERE ENJOYED WITH THE HEADPHONES ON...CHILLIN IN THE CRIB..."LISTENING!!!" LISTENING...AND LISTENING MORE TO THE MC AND THE VIBE...I WAS ENTERTAINED!
2680491, haven't heard it yet... kinda scared though
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Apr-02-12 07:53 AM
...i didn't win the megamillions, so no De La / Prince Paul album
2680663, SMH @ folks expecting a classic.
Posted by spew120, Mon Apr-02-12 01:40 PM
2680668, I sure wasn't. But I at least expected something pretty good
Posted by CMcMurtry, Mon Apr-02-12 01:46 PM
My impression of these guys was they didn't put shit out unless it was up to par (thus explaining the long absence)

And yeah, you can say that it isn't under the De La name and blah blah, but who you think is gonna be the folks checking for this? De La Soul fans.
2680711, COULD BE

THAT DE LA MIGHT HAVE ASSUMED THAT THEIR FANBASE IS A LITTLE BIT MORE INTELLIGENT THAN THE AVERAGE FAN SO DOING AN ALBUM WHERE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO GO INTO CHARACTER LIKE AN ACTOR DOING A MOVIE WOULDN'T BE THAT HARD OF A CONCEPT FOR THEIR FANS TO UNDERSTAND ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY WERE APART OF PRINCE PAUL'S PRINCE AMONG THIEVES ALBUM

2680713, Did you leave the caps lock on or are you that heated?
Posted by CMcMurtry, Mon Apr-02-12 03:36 PM
I don't care that they did an album under a new name or tried some new shit. Cool, spread your artistic wings. I'll never knock someone for being trying to be creative.

It's that the shit just ain't good, IMO.
2680712, I like this album its a nice side project
Posted by Menphyel7, Mon Apr-02-12 03:28 PM
2680730, i thought it was cool.. idk
Posted by Goose, Mon Apr-02-12 04:16 PM
it's nothing to be taken too seriously, theyre just having fun. i think the beats are cool, they're spitting, and the hooks are catchy.

good spring/summer album.

BING

IT'S A TRUE HEADPHONE ALBUM IMO...NOTHING I CAN THUMP IN THE WHIP BUT A NICE LONG TRAIN RIDE, WORKOUT, PLAYING ON THE COMPUTER....YEAH IT'S GOOD TO GO
2680900, De La did it again
Posted by Soulroe, Mon Apr-02-12 10:05 PM
Another enjoyable LP.

Smile
2680901, This shit rough
Posted by Soulroe, Mon Apr-02-12 10:08 PM
2680910, i'd love to hear de la over madlib beats..now THAT would be dope
Posted by Bblock, Mon Apr-02-12 10:32 PM
2680962, Then you can listen to Shopping Bags (Grind Date)
Posted by IslaSoul, Tue Apr-03-12 01:32 AM

that's a madlib beat
2682238, That Was The One Song I Disliked On "Grind Date"
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu Apr-05-12 02:20 PM
I was kind of hyped back then to hear they decided to choose a beat from Madlib but when I heard the song, it was a total let down, the songs they had on their "Impossible Mission" which were songs that didn't make their albums were way better than "Shopping Bags".

2683356, Madlib didn't really hold it down on that album
Posted by Nodima, Sun Apr-08-12 12:53 PM
even Come on Down was some kind of disappointing

Supa Dave West really turned out some of his better work though

ON ESPN FIRST TAKE
2682242, lol I thought I had forget to turn something off this morning
Posted by Menphyel7, Thu Apr-05-12 02:25 PM
then I realize oh its on the tv lol
2682202, It's a throwback
Posted by rhythmismt, Thu Apr-05-12 01:28 PM
Maybe the reason you don't like the sound is that this is some throwback shit. The sample on the single is literally an early 80's disco/b-boy tune.

The whole album is hearkening back to what hip-hop was to them when they were up-and-coming. Yeah maybe it's kinda simple break beats and straightforward, but that's the style they intended.

I dunno what to tell you if you can groove to this album. I personally thought it was funky as hell. And there are some great verses in there, too. It's no undun, but it's not trying to be.

I think really what they're saying with this project is: we're just here to make music. Here's something that's a new take on old styles, and a cool idea perfect for Plug 1 and Plug 2 to rap about.
2683314, Wow, people really don't like THIS!?!
Posted by Adwhizz, Sun Apr-08-12 07:39 AM
I'm only 5 tracks in but Pos and Dove are holding it down on the lyrics and these beats are NICE (So far at least)
2683315, Also I'm loving the strings on this album
Posted by Adwhizz, Sun Apr-08-12 07:41 AM
2683331, it's alright
Posted by seandammit, Sun Apr-08-12 09:42 AM
It's great to hear Dave and Pos, but the beats are just decent to me. Kind of sounds like instrumental music you'd find in the score for the fast-moving/transitional scenes in a big blockbuster comedy – real clean sounding and BIG, but they lack that soul/grit.

Lyrically, like most hip hop concept albums it starts off very strong, but kind of just ends.

I'm fine with it. It's a side project, and we know that there's another official De La album on the way soon; I just don't imagine that I will listen to this as frequently as their other albums.
2683351, Into track goes...
Posted by bigr2k, Sun Apr-08-12 12:00 PM
I guess ppl thought this was going to be "Stakes is High" - this record sounds great so far!
2686395, Umm, this is good
Posted by topaz, Sun Apr-15-12 07:42 PM
Not sure what some people were expecting but I'm loving these funky/disco type beats.
2686398, this album is pretty damn good!!!!

2686451, RE: this album is pretty damn good!!!!
Posted by Questdan, Sun Apr-15-12 10:03 PM
wow i'm shocked y'all really dont like this, i heard this album and was bugging out, i thought it was extremely dope and put together very well. I can see what y'all are saying with the beats but as far as lyrics, storyline, execution, and concept i feel they nailed it all. They went in on this project to me.
2686459, I listened to it today while hiking .. I enjoyed it
Posted by handle, Sun Apr-15-12 10:59 PM
It's upbeat for the most part, the skits were pretty good and the last skit before the final performance had a nice twist.

It's a solid effort for sure.

It's not Prince Paul era De La ... but it's wasn't supposed to be.

2686511, wack
Posted by Boximus Crime, Mon Apr-16-12 04:34 AM
And for De La I shouldn't even be saying that shit. But being that their sound seemed to be going more RnB I haven't been into anything they released since The Mission Impossible mixtape they dropped.
